Germain Arena Memories

Posted November 11, 2008

I'm guessing few people have spent more time at Everblades/Teco/Germain Arena than y'all on the Blades Blog -- so we're hoping to get your help with our coverage of the arena's 10th anniversary on Nov. 19.

If you have specific memories at the arena (Blades first game, Game 7 against Dayton in '07 -- even memories regarding concerts or other events) please share them with the NDN. These memories will be compiled for our coverage of the anniversary on Nov. 19.

If you have photos or videos, those would be great, too.

Please send any memories or multimedia to sports@naplesnews.com

Feel free to reminisce on the blog, too :)

ANGIE,
From what MFH can remember; DECEMBER 23, 1998, MFH'S HEAD split open by the stick of Miami Matador's player, JOHN BADDUKKE in the third period.
7 staples to close the wound....

Not only video, a signed stick blade from BADDUKKE that says "Heads Up", and a copy of a two signed "settlement checks" ...

Well that explains all of the small print on the tickets, signage regarding libility and the constant updates by the announcers regarding where you sit and the dangers associated with it.

Ya you know...I have to mention...with lines dwindling at concessions, in the light of a poor economic environment, will someone please get a bright idea? Consider lowering pricing so sales improve and both sides can enjoy. Listen folks...if you ever went to business school there is such a thing as price elasticity...we will only pay so much...but it's reached where too many are "turned off." Perhaps someone should think to do something about beer and food prices. AND I SINCERELY MEAN IT.

Now there are two sides to every coin. The on-ice product has been fantastic. I feel like I've been hibernating for years...so for that part, thank you goes out to the entire organization...

AB

December 23, 1998. MFH whining and riding INSIDE an ambulance, instead of chasing AFTER it....Priceless.

CJ - now that you've pointed out the change in the opening part of the games - it annoys me too! Hey People FIX IT! "Rise for your hometown Everblades" and do it before the national anthem ... the flow is all off!
___________________________

Can SOMEONE/ANYONE/ANGIE PLEASE let Matt, the public address announcer, know PLEASE...

For opening it's the following:

"And noooowwww LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, STAND and CHEER for your HOMETOWN FLOOOOORRRIDA EVVVERBLADES..."

Guess MC has strained the relationship between the Blades and the Panthers.

--------------------------------------

Would you be kind enough to provide a link to "strained" relationships?

If not, its just the same baseless MC rhetoric

And while we're on the subject How many Panthers prospects are down here this year?

Yeah, about THAT many...

.... just what CB and MC have previously stated--not many Panthers prospects are gonna be down here

And would you rather have Plante over Leggio?

Or Plante over the reigning ECHL goalie of the week in Khudobin? You know, the same goalie that was sub 2 in the AHL and ECHL last season?

Inquiring minds want to know...

#10 Posted by CSA on November 11, 2008 at 5:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)

In order for us to Khudombin (sp?) the Blades had to have Shantz recalled to Rochester who went him to Dayton. It is only that Plante is an even up switch. We don't want 3 goalies on our roster and the Panthers have to have a place for their Goalies.

I actually think that that the Panthers were MORE than accomidating to the BLades with moving Shantz. The #1 reason that the NHL teams want an ECHL affiliation is to have a place to train their Goalies and they gave up that perk in order for MC & CB to bring in a goalie from the Minnisota Wild program.

#11 Posted by hambling on November 11, 2008 at 5:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ughh ... I'll break it down again

Rochester gets Emmerson (MC deal) in return Panthers move Shantz to Dayton to make room for Khudobin - go back and follow the movement -- it's cut and paste.

Definitely NOT a strained relationship ... actually highly functioning at the mo'!

Following up on CJ's post regarding Matt the announcer - can you also let him know its "Everblades back TO full strength" and NOT "Everblades backTA full strenght"
He does on okay job - but needs some elocution lessons.

Nice to see the other ECHL teams dealing with the inferior Panthers prospects, anyways

#15 Posted by CSA on November 11, 2008 at 6:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

My favorite Germain mermory was when Dauber shut out the Blades on Teddy Bear Toss night, and the fans were booing, throwing beer, Teddy Bears, cokes, and popcorn at him, while he did his best Rick Flair impersonation.

Good times.... eh?

Bingo.

And we have a much better prospect, too.

Heck, if Khudobin get called up anyways, Leggio isnt a bad fall back option AT ALL.

While its VERY early, its nice to see the Blades have this much say for a change.

CSA,
Cut and pasted from the last Blog for your enjoyment....

CSA,
Looks like you took Professor Kamerschen's online course when you were housed in GA....
How would this scenario work out, 5 guys go to a Blades game:
1) The first one brings a Flask of Whiskey with him and only buys 1 coke to flavor it during the night.
2) Another is with his elderly relative and will say he left his wallet in the car and have the old guy foot his bill througout the night.
3) The Third gets "jacked up" on Old Milwaukee and "buds" BEFORE the game and then bums a few beers off different people througout the night, never hitting the same on twice.
4) This guy will go up to breakaways or sneak into the cypress club, will either buddy up to someone at the bar or "run a tab" when the intermission is almost over will say he needs to use the restroom, and will leave his dollar store sun glasses on the bar so as not to raise suspicion.
5) He comes to the game pays for parking BUYS a few "doubles" and will also throw a free beer to one or two guys or gals during the evening...

ANGIE,
MFH's Top 10 GERMAIN/TECO Memories...

MFH was at ALL of these "events"...

10) Firecats winning the af2 Championship

9) Last game that the Florida Sea Dragons/Basketball played at Germain, worst product to ever perform at Germain.

8) JOSH GROBAN concert

7) Blades losing to Trenton in Kelly Cup Finals, the TYLER McKAY collapse and HAYWARD after the series telling MFH he is #1 with a finger gesture....

6) AC/DC playing in a local radio station Hurricane fund raiser with local guitarist Cliff Williams

5) Former Lead Singer of Bad Company BRIAN HOWE getting married at half time of a Firecat game, MFH in wedding Party.

4) SARAH PALIN Rally

3) Blades OPENING night at TECO, HOCKEY finally hits SW Florida.

2) Elton John (1) Concert, First MAJOR Performer to appear at Germain.

1) Blades winning Game 5 against Reading in the playoffs, Germain NEVER had that much electricity, felt like a major hockey venue..

Right up there has to be the game 2 performance of the same series, MFH.

The Blades mounted a huge rally after trailing 3-1. I still remember the deafening roar after the Blades tied up and then went ahrad in that game.

I also remember how loud that arena was after Brad Church scored a on short handed brakaway game 2 of the KC finals in '05. that put the Blades up 1-0

He beat Andrew Allen backhanded 5 hole.

The roof nearly was blown off the building for that one, too

Beating Texas in Game 6 of the SD finals 2 years ago is right up there...2 Penalty Shots in the OT of that game 6 was unreal...

Then the game winner....off the charts

CSA MAlly burned his bridge a long time ago with some of us.

As a coach I think he is sneaky. As a person I dont like him. If he were to bring a cup to Estero Florida would my views on him change? Nope they would not BUT I would be excited that he got the job done.

ok i keep waiting for all of you who are supposed to be in the know to post some of the thing that are going on with this team and there is some stuff going on.

the second hand treatment of some vets, the doing everything like texas did it and not like the blades have always done it and the worst part is that CB seems to be sleeping through it all or he has just decided that he dosent give a hoot win at all cost.

sorry not for me IF they win the cup I will not be happy, I want the blades to win!!
sorry team but it really has nothing to do with who you played for last year, it has to do with "you dont come to visit and try to change the furniture around and the color of the drapes to suit you." you have to accept what I have picked out.

HH, your opinion is the definition of stagnation/ status quo and why the Blades were a franchise with diminishing returns lowlighted by last years bust.

Too many people are still living in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

Take a look at the '05-'07 versions

And remember the hellish last season, especially the last month which was a horror show on skates

That team tuned out and QUIT on their HC and their fans.

The bad times tends to get overlooked when taking a stroll down memory lane

This team desperately needed an overhaul and got it.

And again, outside Herauf and Hartlieb, 2 questions...

Who would you have wanted back from last years team?

Of those people you wanted back, how many would be better than whats now in place?

HH: Get out your VCR and watch tapes of the old Blades. Go live in the Berg, Buckley days if you want to. Stop going to games. Don't cheer if they win the Kelly Cup. And remember that every year ended in a loss. Brush and Cameron have put a great product on the ice for us to enjoy. It's a great value for the money you have to spend to see them. Get over the fact that most of these guys played in Texas last year. None of them are referring to Texas. They are wearing Florida jerseys and showing great effort each night. Second hand treating of vets? Cameron and Brush kept the best two players from last year.... Blades organization is doing everything this year that they've done in the past. From season ticket packages, to give away nights, etc.... It's the same. The difference is that they put together a team that has great potential. Last year's team was a joke. It wasn't all Fleming / Nobili's fault. But it was time for them and the blades to part ways. It's pro sports....it happens all the time. Root for the current players in the uniforms as they, so far, have shown great effort with positive results.

CUBBUC: I need your drums.

CSA: Could you imagine what this blog would be like if we kept most of the same team and coaching staff from last year and got off to a poor start?

CSA: Other last year's player that COULD have been able to compete within this year's squad:

1. LUKIN
2. Damon
3. Calander

Of course only Lukie is still in the ECHL.

#35 Posted by hambling on November 12, 2008 at 11:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Imagine, an ECHL franchise being accused of treating their veterans badly. For the most part, ECHL, or AA hockey players, come and go like the weather. Most hope to go up the ladder. True, some, like Buckley and Berg, leave an impression that warrants recognition. However, being a veteran in a AA-hockey league might not be at the top of an aspiring professional hockey player's bragging list. Anyone remember Marc Magliarditi, most games as a goalie in the ECHL, but never won when it mattered? It is hard to imagine an ECHL Hall of Fame. Thankfully, this year's Blades featured out-with-the-old and in-with-the-new. Go Blades!
