More Addition and Subtraction
Posted November 19, 2008
I want to add the full version of my story here, because it probably won't all fit for print.
But here's some brief analysis. Obviously, the Blades have been trading like crazy this season. The count now is nine guys. Gut reaction is: wow. How do you build team chemistry when everybody's head is on the chopping block?
I've had a little more time to think about this, though, and there's more to these trades than the initial gut-check reaction. After all, yes trades can damage team chemistry. But so can keeping a dissatisfied player and making him watch most games from the stands ...
Anyway, first of all, the Blades got two stellar defensemen in last week with Peter Metcalf and Doug O'Brien. They had to find room for these guys. They couldn't tell players that good, "No."
Cameron sounded confident that Metcalf and O'Brien would be around for the long haul. Add in, in his words: "Paiement could return any day," And that's nine d-men on the roster. Too many, especially when guys are in this league for play not pay.
I'm sure Kyle Peto would've rather stayed and played in Florida. But stay and sit -- not so much. (See his quote in the article).
Oh and one other little forgotten fact in the Peto trade. The Blades got something -- it wasn't for cash. Cameron said he's "very excited" about this player. Feel free to scan Mississippi's roster and make your guesses.
It's also anyone's guess when this trade will be completed. Cameron would only say that it would be by the end of the season. Could very likely be someone who's injured now and hasn't even been released as signing with the Sea Wolves.
Speaking of that, don't forget the Blades also have rights to forwards Steve McJannet and Jadran Beljo, both of whom are recovering from shoulder surgery and could be ready as early as next month. AND Brad Herauf will return next week after the Gwinnett game, Cameron said.
So they had to make room. Someone had to be cut ... Yes, it's pretty odd that the Blades have had this many trades this season, and maybe they over-signed some guys. But after last season, when they were scraping the SPHL to get players, you can't blame the Blades for a little over-signing, right?
Cameron said he and Craig Brush determined today that they wouldn't trade anyone else this season. Not saying it definitely won't happen if another Peter Metcalf comes along ... but remember that Brush and Cameron are in on these trades together. And they do want to get some sense of stability on the team before playoff time.
Here's the story with quotes from Peto, Brush and Nimmo ...
By ANGELA BUSCH
abusch@naplesnews.com
ESTERO -- The Florida Everblades engaged in more ECHL arithmetic on Wednesday, with the trade of defenseman Kyle Peto to the Mississippi Sea Wolves for future considerations and the addition of forward David Nimmo, pending completion of his immigration status.
Peto, 26, becomes the ninth player traded by the Blades this year, including the three players who were traded to Dayton this summer.
Blades coach Malcolm Cameron said he's "very excited" about the player yet to be named who the Blades received in exchange for Peto. Cameron said the trade would be completed at a later date this season.
Of the Blades players traded during this season, Peto is the biggest name. The former Kelly Cup-winner had played six games on the Blades' blue line, picking up a goal and two assists. He also had a plus/minus rating of +5.
Nimmo, 26, joins the Blades for the first time after signing a contract this summer but opting to play in Scotland instead. He arrived in Florida on Wednesday but can't officially join the team until his immigration papers clear from Canada.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound center said he's expecting to join the Blades for Tuesday night's game at Gwinnett.
"In hindsight of course I sort of wish I'd come (to Florida) right away," said Nimmo, who was the '07-08 CHL Rookie of the Year. "The hockey team in Scotland was in a lot of financial trouble. They lost two big sponsors last week, and some of my buddies there won't be getting paid."
"I was trying to find a way to get back to Florida even before that, " he said.
On his expectations with the Blades, Nimmo added: "In the past I've scored goals and put up numbers. I'm also big and physical, and I hope to bump some people around."
As for Peto, he said he had "sort of seen (the trade) coming" after sitting out the past three Blades games as a healthy scratch.
"We have a lot of talented d-men, and I didn't want to be a guy in and out of the lineup," said Peto, adding that he felt his options were to sit in Florida or be traded somewhere else and play regularly. "Obviously here is a great place to play, and no one wants to leave. But you have to think about your future."
Coach Malcolm Cameron said the discussion he had with Peto on Wednesday was "difficult."
"At the end of the day, we had seven defensemen in our lineup and (Jon Paiement) could come back at any time (from the AHL," Cameron added. "You just can't carry nine defensemen and keep them all happy."
According to Cameron, he and general manager Craig Brush do not plan to trade away any more players this season.
"We're right at the number that we find comfortable," Cameron said, pointing out that the Blades also still have rights to forwards Steve McJannet and Jadran Beljo, both of whom are recovering from shoulder injuries and could be ready to play as early as next month. Forward Brad Herauf will also return to the lineup next week after recovering from a shoulder injury.
Peto's trade comes after the addition of two defensemen to the Blades roster last week: '07-08 ECHL d-man of the year, Peter Metcalf, and Doug O'Brien, who has spent almost his entire pro career in the AHL, plus five games in the NHL.
Peto said he hasn't been on a team before with this many trades during the season.
"In Europe you pretty much stick with the guys you sign ... in (Idaho) some guys got sent up and some got sent down. We never carried as many people as this team is."
When asked if all these trades were impacting the Blades' team chemistry or making players worry if their roster spots weren't secure, Peto was hesitant.
"That can happen, it just depends on the person and the team," he said.
"I don't think anybody should worry about their jobs," Cameron said. "It should speak well of our organization that we traded a good player to a division opponent. It's not always about business ... Sometimes you have to do what's right for the player, and we wanted to put (Peto) somewhere we knew he'd get to play."

Melanson is returning....Wouldn't that be a kick in the butt.

That was my first reaction, too...
Since we have enough D-Men, my other initial thought was Wolves recently acquired Mike Salekin
Heres the roster. a few former Blades and a former Wildcatter

I dont think anyone wants Melanson back, it was just an initial thought
As of right now, this team has only one Goaltender on its roster. Munce could be a thought.
Anyways...its good to see a chippy 6'2" and 220 added to the frontline.

CSA- If memory serves you predicted Texas in the SD finals the past two seasons also. How'd that work out for ya?
Cubbuc - glad you are seeing through the "spin" some have chosen to bury there heads in the sand regarding this band of all stars.
Finally, I will say it appears Mally has in fact learned from past seasons and is at least prepared for the inevitable call-up and/or injury bug that typically happens in the ECHL. I believe it was Isiah Thomas that said "it's crazy enough it just may work."

CAMERON needs to get a group of guys/"Team" to be able to work together when things may not be so good. Lets say a 3 game losing strek in February, these MERCENARIES have yet to prove they are on the same page.
The Blades already have their "HEAD CASE" in the locker-room, AJ THELEN, they do not need MELANSON...
This group will win regular season games but it is far from being a TEAM for the deep run in the playoffs.........
Look at the predictions of the Cowboys and Chargers in the pre-season and now look how they have been exposed.......

Hello people..my comment on Melanson was a joke...Boy some of you people need to relax a bit. Quit smoking or something.
#19 Posted by BHF on November 20, 2008 at 8:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)
MFH.... you think injuries (Meriman - SD) and (Romo - Dallas) have anything to do with their struggles? You also say the team needs to have a three game losing streak to prove they are are a team? They haven't proven anything yet? Standings prove a lot to the rest of us. More moaning just to moan..... You've pretty much said repeatedly that unless the Blades win the KC, this year will be another failure. 99% of the fans are onboard with what is happening with the team so far. Everyone agrees the TEAM is playing better than last year. Talent is better. Chemistry is better. Coaching is better. The only person with a problem is you.... I guess we are all wrong. Perhaps the knock on your head that you've talked about repeatedly did more damage than we thought. We are waiting on the next set of your awards... LOL.
Cameron: To please MFH, lose at least three in a row during this trip so MFH can see if the team is coming together to his liking. To please the rest of the fans: keep winning and giving 100% to make the start of the next ten years a memorable one. No need to prove anything to us by losing games.
CUBBUC... no need to scream at me after this, but I think most would agree that every personnel move since the start of the season has helped the team. We even got one of those types of players that you like (Metcalf). I could care less who is wearing the jersey as long as they are giving 110% each game and putting themselves in a position to win the Cup. Which in my opinion they are doing well. With our AHL affiliates not doing as well, we should be primed for a playoff run with little or no call-ups at that time.
Go Blades.

ANGIE,
Seems like the EURO Teams are having a tough time paying the players and alot are jumping ship.
Also, does CAMERON really think this "group" has alot of chemistry? Hopefully he can give you a straight answer and not MALLIE SPEAK...
WHO is the Backup Goalie for the road trip or are The MERCENARIES good enough to play without a goalie....
#23 Posted by MFH on November 20, 2008 at 12:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Word on the street is that Khudobin is not expected to be gone for long. He may be back before our next game. If not, I'm guessing we'll have an EBUG for a game or two. I believe Leggio and the "MERCENARIES" will be able to handle that.
#24 Posted by Moondog on November 20, 2008 at 2:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)
"Cameron said he and Craig Brush determined today that they wouldn't trade anyone else this season."
AB even if there is not a "Metcalf" available there will still be trades made.
We have so many allstars on our team we are just trading one for another. Stop the revolving door, my gawd.
The sad part it the ones that should do the best usually dont.
SDW I might be able to find a couple other jumpsuits if need be. You would have to wear one though. LOL
Cameron are you sure you have the team you want now??? Are you really sure??? I mean we might need some more offense or some better goaltending, dont you think???
#25 Posted by BUSSYFAN on November 20, 2008 at 3:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)
ECHL teams, particularly those with NHL/AHL affiliations are probably the least chemistry or cohesive prone semi-professional or professional teams on the go. Through the 03-04 and 04-05 seasons Florida had 39 and 34 players respectively come/go/stay. During the last two seasons, 33 and 37 players have played in Germain. Injuries at every level, callups/send-downs and prospect development dictate constant player shuffling in a AA league. So far this season, 27 players have performed for the Blades and injury time, at all levels, is just beginning. The anti-player movement drums had best be back ordered. Did MC say "no more trades" or "no new taxes?" Go Blades!
#26 Posted by KUGAR27 on November 20, 2008 at 4:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Philly- So what you are saying is that if the Blades do not suffer many major injuries and are not affected to badly by call-ups that they should be set up for a deep playoff run? What then would be the Eagles excuse for their struggles? BTW it's not just Albany and Rochester you have to worry about as far as "call-ups".

Dayton:

Delete Steve Czech, D suspended by team
#30 Posted by WYMAN on November 21, 2008 at 5:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)
CHIP: First Westbrook is hurt. Second: No one was picking the Eagles for a deep playoff run except Berman on ESPN.. We don't have a bunch of all-stars (all -pros). We have no wide receivers again and the Offensive and defensive lines are old. They are right where they should be....about a .500 club. In fact, I think they will be lucky to win 8 games this year. Giants (Away), Wash (A) Dal (H)..will probably be losses. Baltimore will beat them this week. That leaves Cleveland (A-I think) and Arizona (H)..... There is not a definite win anywhere there....
And yes, there are other call-up possibilities, but the playoffs should produce more players for us than call-ups since the main two affiliates are struggling.

MFH: if I need a cut and paste, plea bargain attorney, I'll call you...MFH calling people "ball busters" is pure comedy. Try out for "Last Comic Standing"...might be more lucrative for you... remember, just a blog, having some fun, you do it all the time. Feelings hurt? And if I had as much free time as you these days, I could catch up on the ECHL stat sheets like you seem to be reading a lot of...
CHIP: MFH doesn't like anyone giving facts that he can't dispute. The guy is wrong 98% of the time... Considers plea bargains "wins". You asked me about football....again, MFH misses the point of your question.
Go Blades....need a good start tonight. Unless, you're MFH who is rooting for losses to see if the team can overcome adversity...

Carlson with the goal - I wasn't TOO far off......<g>
I was listening to Kevin Reiter on the radio feed while watching the B2 feed, but when they came back on for the start of the 2nd Kevin's feed was WAY behind. Can't watch hockey like that so I turned on the Lynx announcer who is spot on with the video.
I think maybe the addition of the new players has thrown off the rhythm of the lines. Not too bad, but even on the internet feed you can see that the timing seems off. Small problem that should correct as the trip goes on.
The Glads are beating the Bombers and the Sea Wolves are up over the Sting Rays.

Here is how a Lynx fan, at the game tonight, summed up the action on ITB (FC60) :
-----
The Blades are super talented. They play a very smart tight game in all 3 zones. I was very impressed.
Boy are they soft...The Lynx tried to pound them out the JBL. Metcalf should wake up in the morning and he should be sick...He cost the Blades Mark Lee for a long time.
I think Mark Lee has a SEVERE shoulder injury...It was beyond hanging..It was limp as he skated off the ice...More then a simple seperation...I'm not trying to cause trouble...My guess is he out for the year...looked alot like Sergei Gonchar of the Pens shoulder injury. Legal Hit by Cody Blanshan...He caught Lee and drove him high and hard into the boards.
Fournier has a knee injury..Could be a sprain...Could be an ACL. He took a knee to knee hit from BJ Crum...Not a single Blades player even skated up to Crum.
The Blades better find some muscle...They will run out of skilled players sooner then later. Peter Metcalf is a joke...He instigates...He wont drop the gloves...Big stronger players in return target skilled forwards...Tifu had a bloody lip from a Patrick Bordeleau cross check to the mush(not called)...Ryan Lang was punched in the face at least 3 times by Brock Wilson(Not called)...Patrick Bordeleau dropped the gloves and punched 2 seperate players(2 Min Unsports. Conduct)
Lynx fans will complain about the Refs...They should...Blades fans could make the same argument
I believe the Blades are the most talented team in the South
I believe the Stingrays are the best team.
The other 4 teams are decent.

(Sorry for the cut & paste NDN..not really)

#104 Posted by BUSSYFAN on November 22, 2008 at 1:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)
REALITY CHECK:
Majority of the BLADES Wins this season are against SUB .500 Teams. The LYNX are the P'Cola of last year, Gwinnett is terrible and Charlotte is at best a .500 Team.
The Blades have weaknesses that other teams are going to exploit in the near future.
Blades being "soft" is no surprise. CAMERON can throw all the MERCENARIES he wants on the ice but a CHAMPION needs Heart and Soul.........
#105 Posted by MFH on November 22, 2008 at 8:13 a.m. (Suggest removal)
didnt the rays pull that knee on knee thing in the last game also? the big bad man Bordeleau looked stupid droping the gloves all by hisself, of coures the stink announcer says it was because Grenzy was scared, nope Grenzy smart who sat and who had the PP.
Just my opinion watching these Rays games they are an unskilled team that has to be dirty and it will catch them in the end. too bad JM HAD more respect for you as a coach then this.
Dont anybody go gettin your knickers in a knot, yes we need some muscle on the team and we need guys to step to the plate..... but the best use of that is knowing when to use it. you dont want the crowd in that little arena fired up aginst you. sometimes brains is way better that brawn.
#106 Posted by SDW on November 22, 2008 at 8:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)
For the true Blades fans..... Majority of Blades wins against SUB .500 teams? Not true.....4 wins against sub .500 teams. 5 wins against the others. Gwinnett is over .500. And we pinned both SC losses on them. Augusta was over .500 until we played them.... details, details, details,.....

#109 Posted by MFH on November 22, 2008 at 9:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)
As far as I have heard, MFH, Big Ern's texting thumb is in mid season form. However, he does have a huge zit on the end of his nose that is making it hard fit the helmet on WITH the visor attached.

Hard to know for sure about these injuries and what's happening, but here's another development. Jacob Micflikier loaned to the Blades tonight, apparently:

MFH...thanks. I hear what you are saying about the competition though. It will come down to SC and us. At least it appears that way. Who ever can get the most wins and points from the others will take first place. Not sure who SC has to play up North, but hopefully it is similar. Although, this long road trip could be critical. 1/4 of our away games on this trip alone. With some tough North opponents. That team bonding you are hoping for could really come into play here.... I just don't want the adversity of a losing streak.... :-)
Go Blades.

During Friday night's game in Augusta, the New Blades played probably their best puck control, puck movement, use-the-whole-ice game thus far this season. Outshooting a weak team sporting only a goalie, 42 - 21, was a given. The Blades moved the puck smartly from their goal line to the Augusta net with efficiency throughout the game. Except for very brief moments, they controlled the ice during their powerplays and they diminished any Augusta man-advantages by constantly attacking the puck carrier, coming very close to scoring while down two men at one time. The injuring play on Fournier was an obvious kneeing infraction and the routinely inept referee, Rollins, had a front row seat and still was incapable of making the call. Patrick Bordeleau, the Augusta man of heart as some fans were heard to exclaim, brought his stupidity to the forefront by dropping his gloves and then skating around trying to explain why, drawing a penalty for "being dumb." The fact that the Blades did not lose control during these two instances and tried to extract retribution lends complete credibility to the control that they exhibited throughout the game. Rest assured Blades' faithful, when the right time presents itself, the "boys" will be there. Scout night in the James Brown barn should bring more than 2068 fans tonight and, perhaps, a 50/50 of better than $30.00, but someone has got to tell the Zamboni guy to shave the ruts out of the ice while scraping and flooding. Off to Augusta tailgating. Eating with and verbally jousting with the Augusta few is a must. Go Blades!

O kay - so I'm truly concerned over these injuries and look forward to finding out that everybody is OKAY ... please!
Tonight - Hopefully the pain in the buttocks Bordeleau will get KO'd by Zanon or Metcalf - however I will settle for a Blades' clear win ... a touch of Augs blood would be SWEET.
breadCRUM - some of his own blood on his sweater would be excellent as well!!
First Goal - Hartlieb
Blades = 2 points
