Everblades could add former AHL defenseman Mike Hoffman as early as Wednesday

The Florida Everblades are close to signing former AHL skater Mike Hoffman to a contract and the 6-foot-5, 248 pound defenseman could be in uniform as early as Wednesday night.

Team president and general manager Craig Brush didn't confirm the signing, but didn't deny it either.

"I can’t say it’s true at this moment but it could be true in the future," Brush said.

Hoffman, who could be the enforcer that the Everblades have lacked so far this season, played in 61 games for the Chicago Wolves last season, scoring four points and recording 89 penalty minutes.

During the 2004-05 season, as a member of the Cleveland Barons, Hoffman recorded 170 penalty minutes in 58 games.

Hoffman, who played two years of college hockey at the University of Connecticut, spent part of the 2003-04 season with the Peoria Rivermen of the ECHL, playing in 25 regular season games and eight playoff games.

It remains to be seen if the Everblades will release another player to make room for Hoffman. Florida's roster currently stands at 23, but opened the season at 25.

I am very happy to hear this. This is what we need badly. Hoffman is a tough customer.

We need Hoffman badly. We are soft right now and I am so happy to see a physical presence come to the Blades. Hopefully Brush will let him play his game. Maybe fill some more seats also.
