You can tell a person has been involved in government or a large corporation too long when they want to try to control, put limits, and find new ways to make someone conform to their way of thinking, even when results are successful without intervention.
The recent case that stands out clearly that follows this line of thinking is the discussion school board members were having about trying to find ways to change the behavior of the highest performing individual in the school system. School board members were concerned that this same person had missed 52 days of school. They were also struggling how to handle the situation because the parent had signed off on most of the absences.
Rather than bringing the parent and student in to find out what made them so successful, they wanted to find ways to have this top performing individual fit into their little box and redefine success.
The discussion should have been more like, “Let’s get this student in a special session and find out how they managed to achieve such good results, and try to emulate that line of thinking into other students.
There is an old saying that says, “Trying to put fences around creativity and innovation is the best way to cultivate sheep.”
