In short, an ecotourism destination.

It’s also a 7-mile parking lot with an average of 14 potholes for every mile. The town council of Fort Myers Beach and the Lee County Commission both agree the road needs some serious work. The question of how to pay the estimated $8 million per mile cost of rebuilding the road, and who will pay it, creates less agreement.

The official county estimate is from $50 million to $70 million. Officials with the city of Fort Myers — who are losing the team — have speculated the cost could exceed $100 million. There is agreement on where the money will come from, however.

The profit that real estate agent Samir Cabrera promised investors in a pair of south Fort Myers land deals sounds ridiculous now, but in the fevered development market of early 2006, anything seemed possible.
