This year’s roundtable theme was: “Where are we and where are we going? Where economics and business collide.” The panel consisted of a banker, a real estate company president, a CEO of a major construction company, an executive vice president of a large building industry association and Aysegul Timur, a professor of economics.

We have heard appreciation for running so many through Election Day.
We heard anger from backers — not just detractors — of Barack Obama. They wondered why, if we really endorsed him, and we did, would we allow so much opposition to him to be published.

Our lives are fraught with ecological disintegration, social and economic injustice and the perpetuation of political disenfranchisement, violence and war. She’s in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the highest IQ ever recorded. Her intelligence quotient is so high that nobody’s been able to firmly nail it down: it’s been listed between 167 and 230. A very smart lady. She’s married to Robert Jarvick, inventor of the artificial heart named after him. She’s the chief financial officer of Jarvick Heart Inc. She writes a weekly column for Parade magazine, “Ask Marilyn,” which is carried in 400 newspapers (including this one) every Sunday and has a readership of more than 70 million. Smart.

</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/nov/15/guest-commentary-sleep-apnea-could-be-preventing-y/?partner=RSS</link><description>Sleep apnea affects over 12 million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. But what is sleep apnea, who is affected and what are the symptoms and signs? And finally, what can be done about this under-diagnosed, under-treated disorder? Sleep apnea causes a temporary cessation in breathing while asleep, which can last from a few seconds to minutes, and can occur five to 30 times an hour. When the breathing starts, there is sometimes a loud snort or choking sound.

O’Connor was our publisher from 1971, eight years before I got here, until 1986. Let the news flow? He would have approved as today’s news staff worked to get the news about his death at age 88 into the same edition with election coverage. You may know someone from the same mold. He was a classically handsome, square-jawed Irishman. Deep voice. Quick wit. Quick tempered. Great laugh. All business. Old school, you might say.

</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/nov/08/phil-lewis-historic-night-headline-writers-too/?partner=RSS</link><description>As the votes were counted late Tuesday night, it was apparent that well before our press deadline a winner would be known in the 2008 presidential election. That was quite different from the close votes of the previous two elections. As we discussed the headline for the next day’s front page, a thought occurred: Why not use our Web site to ask our readers what the headline should be?

The contrast with Southwest Florida can be startling. Our condo in Naples is smack on the beach, a mere 13 floors above sea level. Our view of the Gulf of Mexico is breathtaking; no two sunsets are alike.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 2 million domestic-violence injuries to women each year.
If those sound like grim statistics, they are. But those of us who work to prevent violence know it used to be a lot worse.

</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/nov/08/guest-commentary-green-technology-can-spark-econom/?partner=RSS</link><description>The economic picture is certainly not a rosy one for Southwest Florida. The Lee County jobless rate hit the 9.2 percent mark last month, which amounts to more than 26,000 people looking for employment. Our neighboring counties to the north and east are not faring any better. Charlotte County’s unemployment rate is 9.5 percent and Hendry County has the state’s highest unemployment rate at 14.1 percent. Obviously, an economic recovery program is desperately needed, not only on the local level but on a state and national level.

The answer: Neither presidential candidate did. In fact, according to exit polls, the boomer vote split almost exactly down the middle.
Among those age 45 to 64 — which includes most boomers — 50 percent voted for Barack Obama and 49 percent for John McCain.
