The opening kickoff of the Naples Gators preseason jamboree this Saturday afternoon at Fleischmann Park carries with it more than just the start of another year in the Orange Bowl Youth Football League.
Prior to the scheduled 12:30 kickoff to its 125-pound team’s game, the football club will honor former Gator and Golden Gate High player Chris Simmons by presenting his family with two framed No. 11 jerseys and a banner in Simmons’ memory.
Chris’ brother, Michael, who plays for the 125-pounders, will wear No. 11 this season. The number will be retired at the end of the year.
Simmons died March 6 after suffering two collapsed lungs. The Gators family also suffered another loss earlier in the year when Mark Ziemenski, a coach for the football club, died in a January traffic accident.
Raffles and donation tents will be set up at the jamboree with all proceeds being donated to the Chris Simmons Scholarship, an annual $1,000 to aid a deserving student from Golden Gate High who plans to pursue of athletics at the collegiate level.
Information on how to send donations can be found on the Naples Gators’ Web site: www.eteamz.com/naplesgators.

What a lovely idea. Thanks Gators.
On a side note, the Gators are not a Pop Warner organization.
