The NCAA on Tuesday granted West Virginia defensive lineman Pat Liebig's petition for a sixth season of eligibility.
The 6-foot-4 Liebig, a Naples High School graduate, left the team in January 2007 after his junior season, returning home to Naples, to run his family's automobile dealer business in Naples and to care for his ailing father, who suffered from anxiety.
The business was sold last October and his father's health improved, so Liebig asked the NCAA to allow him to come back in 2008.
"The entire Mountaineer nation is thrilled with the great news that we received from the NCAA today," West Virginia coach Bill Stewart said. "Pat Liebig has been granted his senior year of eligibility, and we could not be happier.
"We appreciate the committee's thoughtfulness and judgment in reaching this decision."
The German-born Liebig, who had been allowed to practice while awaiting the NCAA's ruling, will help replenish a defensive line that lost starters Keilen Dykes and Johnny Dingle. Liebig played nose guard previously and has been moved to defensive end this season.
Liebig last played in the Gator Bowl after the 2006 season and has 39 career tackles. Previously he had received a medical redshirt after missing most of the 2004 season.
The NCAA's reinstatement committee had rejected Liebig's initial appeal last month but sought additional information regarding his father's illness. The NCAA limits athletes to completing four years of eligibility within a five-year window, except in special circumstances.
