John McEnroe was defaulted Thursday in his opening-round match of the Hall of Fame Champions Cup in Newport, R.I., for unsportsmanlike conduct and official code violations.
Having won the first set against MaliVai Washington, McEnroe was trailing 4-2 in the second when he was issued a code violation for an obscenity aimed at the chair umpire. As the tirade continued, McEnroe was issued two more code violations, which resulted in Washington winning the point, game and set.
The crowd began to grow restless, and McEnroe responded with an obscene gesture. McEnroe was then given a fourth violation, which resulted in his default from the match.
McEnroe is expected to continue in the round-robin portion of the tournament. He is scheduled to play Karel Novacek Friday.
McEnroe was part of the field at the Oliver Group Champions Cup in March at Players Club & Spa at Lely Resort, where he lost in the final to Todd Martin. The Oliver Group and Hall of Fame tournaments are part of the Outback Champions Series.
