Editorial: Combining for public good

STORY TOOLS

We like to see public agencies work together. That goes double when the agencies are in law enforcement and the product of working together is public safety.

The most recent example is the Collier County Sheriff’s Office converting its former Marco Island substation into the Joint Marine Operations Center for the Sheriff’s Office and six other agencies that focus on the water.

Those agencies — the Marco Island Police Department, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Border Patrol and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service — do surveillance ranging from environmental matters to human smuggling and illegal immigration to terrorism.

This is terrific, timely news.

Marco Island is a strategic location for watching marine traffic to all of Florida’s west coast. Landings of aliens during the past few years show anything can happen.

Now, an impressive array and variety of agencies will have a single, efficient place — and can share information effortlessly.

We expect big things.

Two would be peace and quiet.

Good work CCSO!

This is the real deal folks--not the BS you hear from the naysayers. Sheriff Hunter and CCSO have always led the way when it comes to playing nice in the sandbox. Look for more of this kind sharing under our new Sheriff Kevin Rambosk--he is a HUGE champion of partnering and knocking down walls between LE agencies.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
