Miracle rout Sarasota, 15-2

— Last Sunday saw the Fort Myers Miracle blow a season-high nine-run lead to the host Sarasota Reds. This Sunday turned out to be the same story with a different result. This time around the Miracle offense never let up in a 15-2 rout of the Reds at Ed Smith Stadium.

Like they did a week ago, the Miracle jumped on the board early, but nothing like last week. With four in the first, five in the second and three in the third, the Miracle found themselves rapidly out to a dozen run lead.

Steve Singleton and Danny Berg picked up back-to-back singles before Johnny Woodard’s walk loaded the bases for Eli Tintor. With two outs on the board and Reds starter Rafael Gonzalez one pitch away from getting out of the inning, Tintor battled back to draw the bases-loaded walk for a 1-0 lead. Before Gonzalez and the Reds knew what happened, Garrett Olson smoked a bases-clearing double finishing off the first frame.

In the second, Juan Portes’ solo homer set the tone with one out. Six more hits later, thanks to RBI singles from Woodard, Olson and Danny Lehmann, along with a sacrifice fly from Tintor, the Miracle found themselves up nine. Portes began the third with a lead-off walk before Singleton collected his third of four hits on the day with a double to right. Berg quickly brought them both in with a triple to center for an 11-0 advantage. Berg soon scored thereafter on Woodard’s groundout to second.

Woodard was on the right side of a close call in the fifth that eventually allowed him to pick up a two-run blast to right. With a 2-2 count, a fastball from reliever Logan Ondrusek looked to be strike three. Instead, the count ran full and on the next pitch, Woodard crushed his fifth home run of the season giving the Miracle a two touchdown lead.

After another Tintor sac-fly in the eighth, Sarasota would get their only two runs of the day on Logan Parker’s one-out single a half-inning later. The 15 runs scored by the Miracle ties the season-high set back in July against Clearwater. Olson and Woodard each collected four RBI on the afternoon, while Tintor finished a close second with three.

Weather permitting, the Miracle and Reds will wrap up their brief two-game set and 20-game season-series on Monday night at 7. LHP Joe Testa (1-0, 1.80) will make his second start for the Miracle against the Reds RHP Daryl Thompson (0-1, 7.71) at Ed Smith Stadium.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
