Letter of the Day: Now look here

Editor, Daily News:

Don’t look now but your political bias in the presidential campaign is showing.

Enclosed is an Associated Press article from Wednesday’s edition.

For at least the second time in recent days you have printed these same side-by-side cameo pictures of the presidential candidates with an AP article.

These pictures clearly demonstrate your attempt to influence the opinions of your readers about the candidates.

You show a smiling, enthusiastic, youthful-looking John McCain next to a doleful, ugly, prissy, wrinkled Barack Obama.

Fortunately, most people have seen enough of these candidates to know that real life is just the opposite. McCain is the old, bumbling dour-looking individual while Obama is the enthusiastic, youthful, big-smile individual.

Makes you look kind of ridiculous, doesn’t it?

Lester Dequaine, Naples

Letter of the Day: It has come to this?

Editor, Daily News:

Every day during the years that we came to Naples as snowbirds and for all the years that we have been permanent residents, we walk on the beach at low tide.

The routine is the same. We park at the end of Seventh Avenue North, leave our sandals on the steps and walk.

Yesterday, my shoes were missing when we returned.

I was more upset by the incident than the actual loss of my shoes.

We had another incident several months ago. We went for a bike ride and upon returning home, left our bikes on the front porch.

About an hour later, I decided to put the bikes back in the garage. I went out to the porch and the bikes were gone.

They were not new, fancy bikes — but someone stole them anyway.

Is this what Naples has become and should we expect more of this in the future?

Pearl Struminger, Naples

Letter: Beware empty beauty

Editor, Daily News:

Eloquence, without any values and important meanings in the words, is worthless for listeners and pretentious for a leader.

Many Greek and Roman speakers were famous for their eloquence that brought knowledge and thoughts to people.

Empty eloquence such as that of Barack Obama is dangerous for gullible people who listen to him.

For example, using many words to say always the same thing about the war in Iraq, calling for immediate withdrawal, refuting the success of the surge, and soon afterward saying the opposite, is an empty “eloquence.”

When he talks about terrorism, he says he plans “to pursue direct and aggressive diplomacy with the Iranian regime” and “It is not weakness but wisdom to talk not just to our friends, but to our enemies.”

Diplomatic eloquence “without preconditions” had not worked with Hamas, Hezbollah and other Islamofascists. This “eloquence” brings in gullible people and leads them to think everybody is nice and everybody is beautiful!

Are we fools to the point that some people talk to us as if we were enthusiastic listeners at a concert of Mozart?

When the Founder Fathers were writing the Constitution in the summer heat of Philadelphia in 1787, their plain, rich words brought the most eloquent message ever heard to this day.

God bless America.

Anne Marie Gressani, Naples

Letter: Ho, hum

Editor, Daily News:

I love to see how everyone goes crazy because of a storm.

People are buying plywood and water.

It’s a Category 1. We see stronger stuff on summer afternoons.

I’m just saying anything that would have fallen or been damaged would have done so three years ago with Hurricane Wilma.

The news just hypes it up.

Maybe it’s just a way for stores to produce more revenue.

So while all of you are stocking up and running around like crazy, I’ll be the guy doing my normal grocery shopping and laughing at you.

Please leave me some water for the rest of the week. You don’t really need 10 cases.

Thanks.

Allen Hubbard, Golden Gate

Letter: Smart enough for us

Editor, Daily News:

We need someone with the talent to guide us through our school budget trouble, who is committed to our children not just in election season. As the leader of Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Kathleen Curatolo has demonstrated that commitment.

Intelligent design, aka creationism, almost made it into our school’s curriculum once. Now a devious group is trying to slip Constitutional Amendments 5, 7 and 9 past voters.

Creationism and these ballot initiatives will destroy our separation of church and state and suck money from our schools to fund Islamic madrassas and Scientologist schools, among others.

Curatolo strongly opposes these amendments and will work toward their defeat. A vote for Curatolo for School Board on Aug. 26 is a vote for Collier County.

Jane Coiné, President, Naples Social Action.org

Letter: Shedding light?

Editor, Daily News:

Letter-writer Maria Baum decries the lack of “real news” by the media. Then she notes that the income gap between the rich and the poor has widened by seven times. Apparently she wants the income of the rich to be given to the poor, which doesn’t make much sense either.

Trying to increase the income of the poor through education, training and job development makes a lot more sense to me.

Baum also asks why the media keep the American people in the dark. She may have something there. The Daily News editorially states: “Give light and the people will find their own way.”

But the Daily News insists on burying the “real news,” plus John Edward’s love affair, on the “dark” inside pages of every issue.

Finally, Baum asks: “Where is the real news?” On pages 3 through 24, visually overwhelmed by ads.

Bill Bond, Bonita Springs

Letter: Helping hands

Editor, Daily News:

The back to school spirit of generosity is at work in the offices of The Education Foundation. Our staff moved into new offices — and we had help from many volunteers and friends to make it happen.

We are fortunate that Boran Craig Barber Engel Construction Co. Inc. allowed us to rent offices in its new corporate building on Enterprise Avenue. Don Barber was a founding board member of The Education Foundation, and along with Melvin Engel, has supported our work for many years as a major sponsor. We value this partnership and applaud their generosity.

John and Cindy Smarge of Ray the Mover helped us move our office and provided four men and two trucks to help all day.

First Sgt. George Harvey and Lt. Col. Paul Garrah brought their Golden Gate High JROTC students to help us pack and move boxes and unpack. We could not have made it without their respectful willingness to help and big smiles.

There were other volunteer helpers, as well as the family and friends of staff, who pitched in to help get things organized.

On behalf of the staff of The Education Foundation, I want to say thank you to the businesses and individuals who help us with their contributions of time and energy. I want to hold up these cases of philanthropy as exemplary along with the students and teachers who give back to the organization that was founded to support them.

Susan McManus, President, Education Foundation of Collier County

Letter: Change? Good luck!

Editor, Daily News:

The discord and confusion within the Democrat ranks, in spite of the love affair Barack Obama enjoys with the mainstream media, is improving Republican chances in November.

After reading the Daily News editorial on Wednesday, this discord apparently isn’t limited to the national level, as the local Democrat Party seems to be struggling with its own problems in “insubordination” and back-biting from party members and some local leaders.

Some troubling examples:

Quoting Obama: “My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you’ll join me as we try to change it.”

Energy policy: His policy seems to be to inflate our tires and get regular tune-ups. Speaker Nancy Pelosi closed down the House for five weeks, refusing Republican requests to remain and prepare a comprehensive energy policy, including drilling and alternate fuels.

Immigration policy: We should all learn Spanish, tire gauges in hand.

International policy: Meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other outlaws. Maybe Obama can talk them into being nice — armed with nukes, but nice.

Planetary policy: Pelosi says she’s trying to “save the planet.” Maybe it would be better if she just tried to save the American people.

Dem convention: Pelosi and Michelle Obama are scheduled to kick it off the first night. That should make Michelle proud to be an American.

World affairs: With Obama’s experience in global politics, we may be fortunate that Russia didn’t enter Georgia on his watch. He might have sent troops to Atlanta and Macon.

Obama reminds me of Jimmy Carter and Michael Dukakis, but without all the glitter.

Paul Van Stone, Naples

Letter: Vote for this pair

Editor, Daily News:

Public education is a public trust. Kathleen Curatolo has earned our trust with her commitment, caring, courage and common sense while serving on the Collier County School Board. She deserves our recognition and support.

Julie Sprague is an experienced educator who can bring a fresh outlook to the board. She understands the necessity of working together as a team with common goals.

You need not live in the same district the candidate is representing to vote for that candidate. Vote for Julie Sprague and send District 4 a message. Vote for Kathleen Curatolo so she can continue to be an advocate for our children. Above all, be sure to vote!

Barbara Barlas, Naples

Letter: Control your accuracy

Editor, Daily News:

Geez. I wish people would check the facts before they write.

I get so tired of reading the same old propaganda that “the Congress is controlled by the Democrats.”

The “control,” as you call it, breaks down like this: 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans and 2 independents.

The independents caucus with the Democrats, true. But the reality is the Democrats don’t control the Congress. During the first six years of Bush’s presidency, when the Republicans controlled both the Congress and the White House, Bush vetoed only one bill — on stem-cell research. Since than he has vetoed 11 other bills. Nothing gets done unless the Republicans allow it. It is that simple.

Democrats don’t control Congress.

So stop embarrassing yourself and read before you write. Blindly spouting the propaganda and “untruths” of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Alan Colmes and Fox News can make one look uninformed or worse.

James C. Athanas, Naples

Letter: How does he do that?

Editor, Daily News:

Who is allowed to do what at the beach? Our beautiful beaches are public, but there are rules, right?

After reading the Letter of the Day about John Riccio taking over the beach near the pier for his fake cemetery several times a year, an old question came back to me: How is he allowed to do this?

I’ll bet you or I could not take over so much public space on the beach to make our own political statements, or any other kind of statement. Yet, I never hear a complaint from anyone.

I guess we are just all so PC that no one dares bring it up. I can’t be the only one who has thought about it! How about some of you sharp reporters there at the Daily News look into this for me? Start on the state level and I’ll bet you find your answer.

By the way, Riccio’s most recent letter called John Kerry a true hero. (Yeah — one who took his own camera to war with him to photograph his own “heroic” actions.)

Mitzi Francis, Naples

Letter: Heroes? Tell us more

Editor, Daily News:

I always like good pieces of fiction, so I read John Riccio’s letters whenever they show up. His last epistle had to do with “heroes.”

He pointed out that John McCain is not now and never has been a hero. He goes on to say that heroes are people like John Kerry and Wesley Clark.

Let’s see, Wesley Clark was dismissed as the chief of NATO forces because of personal shortcomings.

John Kerry, our other hero, garnered four Purple Hearts without spending one night in a hospital. Further, it would seem that the absolute minimum for having four Purple Hearts would be four scars, located somewhere about your person. To date, none have been seen. His other heroic efforts centered around the Paris peace talks where he condemned members of our armed services in Vietnam for killing children, torturing civilians and all the rest. The fact that this was never substantiated did not get in the way of his rhetoric. The other captains of swift boats in the area at the time of his tour of duty hastened to condemn him for his flagrant showboating.

Riccio also says he is a veteran and claims he speaks for them. Once again, he gets the Pulitzer for fiction. I am a veteran, as are a lot of my friends. None of us wish to be represented by him.

Brian P. Kenedy, Bonita Springs

Letter: We were wrong?

Editor, Daily News:

On Friday, you did a great service to our understanding of our world. Don Richmond’s letter provides an explanatory concept for much that is confusing about contemporary psychology, sociology, economics and political science. He informs us that the root of all evil in this world is “altruism.”

For decades we thought it was communism. More recently we have believed it is terrorism, and some of us are convinced it is the Democrats, but we were wrong. It is “altruism.”

Now that we know what the base problem is, we can funnel our full resources to defeat altruism. Americans will unite to destroy altruism and the whole world will live happily ever after.

By the way, Henry Miller, in his book, “Tropic of Cancer,” also has much to say about his friendship with Ayn Rand.

Leonard Lash, Bonita Springs

Letter: Three for us

Editor, Daily News:

The Lee County Republican Party has done a disservice to us Republicans by taking sides publicly and privately (committee members) by endorsing candidates for the Lee County Commission.

It is the role of the Republicans in the county to select their candidates. It is the role of the party to ensure a free and open debate. Chairman Gary Lee and the executive committee have abandoned their leadership roles and are serving their special interests.

I believe our incumbent Republican commissioners running in the Aug. 26 primary have been endorsed by most of the local newspapers because they have managed the difficult task of land development, road construction and budgeting for a growing county with a fair and balanced approach to ensure sustainable growth with economic viability.

I hope my fellow Republicans will send a message to the so-called leadership of the county party by supporting Commissioners Ray Judah, Bob Janes and Frank Mann. They look out for us and not the special interests of the Lee County Republican Executive Committee.

John Goodrich, Estero

Letter: An easy choice

Editor, Daily News:

I have learned a lot more about Victor Ortino lately. I think it is fine that he feels his investigative business can be applied in the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. However, the sheriff’s job is so much more than just investigation.

For example: Over 900 prisoners must be securely and safely housed and transported to their various court appearances.

Over 900 employees must be trained, motivated and supervised.

The sheriff must understand modern finance and management techniques and how to successfully manage relationships with the board of county commissioners, city of Naples, Citizenship and Immigration Service and local civic groups.

Sheriff’s deputies provide for traffic safety; they gave over 30,000 traffic citations last year.

Among the candidates for sheriff, only Kevin Rambosk has both the professional education and on-the-job experience to lead and manage these complex and critically important tasks. It’s an easy choice at the ballot box. Vote for Rambosk!

Larry Baytos, North Naples

Letter: Why do innocents suffer?

Editor, Daily News:

This letter is written in regards to an Aug. 8 arrest report of someone accused with having sex with a minor.

The story itself was upsetting. However, the way it was written was what hit home the most.

My spouse works as a server at Joe’s Crab Shack. We rely heavily on his income from waiting tables. There are many good, hard-working people who are employed at the restaurant that have families to feed. Your reporting of the incident that supposedly occurred there will no doubt hurt business.

While businesses have been suffering anyway due to our economy’s problems, it’s unfortunate that a situation like that occurred and my heart goes out to the minor and the minor’s family.

I wish your writers would think of everyone their stories might affect and use a little discretion. The criminal should be punished for what happened, not the employees and their families of Joe’s Crab Shack.

Denise Naterman, Naples

Letter: Then what?

Editor, Daily News:

Being my first time submitting a letter to the editor, I’m very curious about something. I’ve read the editorials for a long time and have had many chuckles with most of the political cartoons (with a lot of letters, too).

My question, however, is after many years of seeing President George Bush portrayed as looking like a monkey, what will happen if Barack Obama is elected president?

Will these same cartoonists make him out to look like a primate as well? Or will it all of a sudden be considered racial profiling?

Just wondering.

Craig Korpal, Naples

Letter: Closer to home ...

Editor, Daily News:

I marvel at how incredibly fast the president of the United States directs humanitarian efforts to be put into place for countries in need after a disaster.

I would feel equally awed by the same action taken during or after a hurricane disaster or for the incredible hunger and poverty here on our shores.

Maxine Newman, Naples

HAVE A SAFE DAY TODAY!!!

Yesterday was a great day on this blog!! Good stuff! We accomplished nothing as usual! But hey, we are utilizing our first amendment rights.

Once again CHILDREN, you affect "change" by writting, faxing, e-mail, morse code and smoke signals sent to your elected officals. Thinking that if we elect a "certain person" that will affect change is Harry Pottersville. There are no magic wands in politics!!!

When elected officals see and hear what a "majority" wants at all times (there's got to be new technology to be able to do so), you can bet your voter registration card that they will "change" as DEMANDED by the "majority".

Start demanding term limits, line item veto, fix social security, affordable insurance, secure our borders, deport illegals when "found" and a strong military for starters!!!

Let them hear from the "MAJORITY"!!!! That means you "BLOGHEAD"!

Oh say can you see...by the dawns etc.

America, America GOD shed his grace on thee etc.

Today's lttes are certainly indicating the "panic" that is developing amongst our Bushies, Conservatives and Neocons. Their days are numbered as the "Great White Hope" continues to stumble and follow the failures of his compatriots. A new "surge" is developing that will sweep out the worst political administration in American history. Hopefully, there will be a "hospice" for Ms Gressani. God bless her!

Elephant,
I see just the opposite. I think the OB supporters are in the panic mode. It's a LONG, LONG way'til election day. Good luck.

Hey Rejoice; I'm wondering if McCain consults with Cindy about important matters, or does he deal with her like he did with his first wife? Is McCain another Bush - "my way or the highway"?
How about a short McCain answer? You know like "at conception"!

Alma, You are right about it being a long time politically until the election. There is a lot of oil money that can be "exploited" to make a big difference. The "Goebbels" technique has worked for the GOP in the past and well may be the determining factor again. I'm sure a lot of high rise Naples residents are being "warned" of the consequences of a loss of "clout" in Washington.

#11 Posted by Elephanttamer on August 18, 2008 at 8:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Elephant,
Naples is just a speck on the donkey/elephants rear end. We'll all see how it plays out. In the meantime I hope everything goes well with Fay. Good luck.

Posts #1-6 were by GoneFishin, and as usual he had very little to contribute. Why should one person write most of the posts and say little of anything that makes any sense? Some of us don't have time to wade through such nonsense. There are other more worthwhile things to do.

#13 Posted by rationalman on August 18, 2008 at 8:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

eddie, you get published so often that you are no one to talk. You are gibberish personified. Keep writing your little drivel that make people feel sorry for you. Maybe try #6 for a little education. Oh, wait. Too late for you.

I love how people think they know the outcome of the election. Maybe we can try something different today. How about wind energy, alternative energy, some kind of plan, something to make a difference?

No, will probably return to sad sack eddie or obama socks or some other nonsense that isn't worth discussing anymore.

Hi Junior,
How's everyting on Pearl Street. This storm is just a bit less than the chinooks on the front range in March. ie nothing to melt your butter.

Hi Gram,

I was watching the weather channel and my prayers are with you all. It was always such a pain throwing the pool furniture in the drink then retrieving it when the storm misses by 100 miles.

I wouldn't be too concerned though. I was at the summit of Mary Jane in January when the winds were at 100 M.P.H., the rain was frozen and falling upwards, visibility was about 10 feet and it was a balmy 30 below zero.

A great day skiing!!!!!!

I wouldn't fret over a little rain on Marco tomorrow.

Just the same, be safe Grandma.

Rejoice: You shouldn't blame Obama if he "fudged" about his dad's military service. After all, the example set by George W. Bush and his "heroics" while a member of the "elite" Alabama Air National Guard set a premier precedent for such "eloquence". You can take solace in McCain's "revelations" of his Hanoi Hilton experiences to set a real measure of service. I keep thinking about that movie "The Bridges at Toko Ro" starring William Holden. What a dummy! Holden that is.

Pearl,

Naples and America have become places that are different now. At some time, people didn't lock their doors. Now, you are asking to be robbed, or have an intruder if you leave a door unlocked. It isn't just Naples, read the National news. You need to secure your valuables, and your doors.

Mitzi, Kerry was a true hero, even more so when he came back and fought for those in Nam still getting killed.
McCain came back from Nam with 'made-up stories' that he use's every day in his campaigns. Why doesn't he show us the treasonous propaganda statements that he signed to get better accommodations and better medical care?
Mitzi, Kerry's not running any more, get some new material.
BTW, JR would love you and your dolt cheer leaders to join him at the beach to show respect for our fallen and try to bring the others back home before they get a cross dedicated to them too.

A question gets asked : Why is it ok for the Iraqi government to bank over 70 billion dollars in the last couple years while American tax payers foot the entire bill in Iraq?
The most learned 'centrist'give this answer which he calls specfic. 1. The story is not new. 2. We blew the place up and should repair it. 3. They are demanding that we leave now. 4. We should be glad they have that money. 5. The price of oil has shyrocketed and made them rick-what is rich? 6. Only YOU think this is good???
Was the question answered?????

Reparations: I wonder if the Russians will "rebuild" Georgia and follow our"example" in Iraq? After all, "what's good for the gander, is good for the GOOSE! Bush will probably tell Putin we are better "suited" to "fix" the "damage" in Georgia. This won't require a tax hike since we can simply borrow the money from the Chinese. They appreciate importing our jobs and exporting their goods. It's just good old GOP Capitalism.

Allen Hubbard:

Go up to Charlotte County and read your letter to the people who lost everything in Hurricane Charley--a Category 1 storm right up until the moment it hit. Can you remember as far back as 2004, or is Wilma as far back as your mental database goes?

While we're doing what we do best--being prepared for any eventuality--we're all smiling. We reserve some of that humor for your sad belief that forecasting is an exact science. We're too kind to laugh, and we won't laugh when your house blows away while you protest, "But it was only supposed to be a Category 1!"

Rejoice: You and your clique seem to want to dismiss the fact/reality that George W. Bush and his entourage are still in office and in a position to add insult to injury! You need to get real and recognize the situation for what it is - CHAOS! International dilemma. Inflation and the domestic scene on the precipace of default and a "smug" smirk from a Crawford cowboy who thinks he's invincible! It's guys like you that have instilled that rationality in the "Great Divider's" modus operendi.

Did anyone see the letter supporting Kathy Curatolo? A liberal think tank of 1 Naples Social Action. Kathy is the biggest liberal on the school board! Does anyone remember Challenge Day and it's San Francisco values hidden agenda? They would have your children out of classes for 2 days worth of fuzzy feel good hugfest! This is a waste of tax dollars for social experiments instead of teaching curriculum. Don't let anyone kid you about Kathy she might call herself a Republican but she is a RINO.

boss, proving yourself incapable once again, here is the actual post I put up:

Is it good that Iraq is flush with cash and we spent money on rebuilding their country?

1 - the story is new and there hasn't been much time to react to it (glad you think these things move quickly - see note about dolt-ism).

2 - We blew they place up, so naturally we should help rebuild it.

3 - They are starting to demand that we leave (even though we will still be there years from now).

4 - Glad they have money to stand on their own someday.

5 - The price of oil has led to their being flush. (In the last year, they have more than doubled their surplus.)

6 - Only YOU seem to think it is a good thing.

---------

You wonder why we don't pay you much heed?

So, the hateful Right Wingers now think it's all right to bash people who served in our military. Let's see, do you go through the ranks and say, you didn't do enough, you did more, you're a fink, you're okay?

You Right Wingers ought to go suck your thumbs and beg forgiveness from all our troops who served in one way for another, and especially you should have the decency not to besmirch those who were in the battle field.

Kerry's service in Viet Nam should be thanked and respected. I notice how you hit the wall if someone says something about McCain's service or anyone else's.

John Riccio honors our dead a number of times throughout the year. Asking us to remember all who have died in the line of duty serving this country. If you do not want to honor them, that's your business, but don't dessicrate the honor that John Riccio puts great effort into because he cares so much. Obviously you, Right Wingers care so little you don't want to be reminded of their deaths. Kinda gets in your way, Huh?

When I drive around Collier County I see signs for Curatolo and Sprague together and now letters to the Editor. Pure coincidence, I don't think so! If you vote for either one you vote for an ultra-liberal agenda and their ideas. I for one do not want that in our schools. Look what's happening in California schools and do we want this to happen in Collier? It's as easy as your A.B.C'S Anybody But Curatolo & Sprague!!!

I don't want one dime of our money sent to rebuild Georgia. Pres. Saakasvili invaded a province and caused deaths and destruction there. Why should he expect that we care about him and his country?

If he knew Russia and its goals so well, then why in the world did he do such a merciless dumb thing as to invade a province aligned with Russia?

No thank you. He started it, now he's got it. And by the way, who's going to help rebuild S. Ossetia, razed by Georgia's hand?

I say stay out of it. We have more on our platter already than we should have.

So, I disagree with both sides, McCains and Obama's to give Georgia money, one billion in Obama's case and probably billions in McCain's case.

I am sick of our sending tax dollars out of this country when we ourselves are bleeding.

Rejoice: Your "wish list" for Liberals to advance your own perverted agenda is a mirror of your own prejudices. For all too long Republicans have been misguiding the public by trying to create a false facade to describe their opposition. Throwing as much "mud" as possible in the hopes that some will stick has been the criteria for so long under the guise and leadership of the degenerate likes of Gingrich and Rove etc. You are just an extension of that doctrine and ignorance!

DinNaples: I can't resist: Your profound "embellishment" of the RA designation with a jibe at two year draftees brings back many memories of this US's recollection of the evaluation that existed when I was in the service. "Loser" comes to mind off hand as someone who needed a "home" and couldn't cut it on the outside. There was also a few other classifications that are to say the least not appropriate for this forum. There were RFAs too, who also were looking for an "escape" of sorts, but the real army is a citizens' army where everyone serves and neutralizes any aspirations the military might concoct in a quest for power. A volunteer army may be more pliable for the Pentagon to run, ala Rumsfeld, but it doesn't generate the true meaning of patriotism!

Inquisitive: You seem to be unaware of Fox Noise and the countless, and I mean "countless", right wing talk shows that permeate the air ways led by the infamous Rush Limbaugh. Media newspapers like the Chicago Tribune have for years sponsored the GOP agenda with the most notable political headline in history: "DEWEY WINS". Keep calling the kettle "black", it will rub off on you sooner or later.

#48 Posted by GoneFishin on August 19, 2008 at 1:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Rejoice: Your litany of GOP "declarations" is just a "stack of cards" waiting for the wind to topple them. Here comes your answer to # 17 of your diatribe. As is always the case in GOP allegations, a simplistic "white or black" answer is sought to castigate the premise. Socialism is depicted as some kind of mantra meant to destroy the rich, powerful and privileged. This immediately creates a shield and sets up the "class warfare" scenario. In fact and truth is a denial of the make up of any society regarding its needs and operation. Here in the USA, we have a form of Socialism in Social Security and Medicare. Without these two programs, no matter how flawed, I dare say the alternative would be utter chaos. So you can't deny that those programs provide benefits and a degree of security for everyone. France and England have had socialistic programs in effect a lot longer than us. They shift from time to time as the need arises. I'd say they have been pretty successful in that respect. Get your "1984" theories tuned in and forget about that "pot of gold" at the end of the GOP rainbow.

#49 Posted by Elephanttamer on August 19, 2008 at 1:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tamer, my "embellishment" was in reply to a proud "US" designation here the other day. Not only are you overly sensitive to those who do not seem to follow your narrow view of just how this country should work, you wish to assume just a little too much. A "real" Army protects our freedom, even yours.

DinNaples: No argument from me about the need for an army, it is just its composition that I think can be troublesome. The army needs to "serve" the people, not "lead" it. The best way to do that is to "participate". Yes I'm for some type of draft or service requirement from everyone. I was impressed to see a folder available at the post office describing the required registration of all 18 year olds and the penalties for non-compliance. There still is some "hope".

Wow, look what I found on Barry's web site!

AllGone, you spend too much time on one web site, but you don't even read it (maybe it's a comprehension thing).

A quick google and came up with a link from Barry's web site.

"To achieve the goal of a world of capable, democratic states, Barack Obama will implement a five-part strategy:

"Make the critical investments needed to fight global poverty."

OK, so on top of his ridiculous plan of throwing more US money to the corrupt, give-away UN, he sounds like those neocon nation builders you love so much.

http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/issues...

But you know that Iraqi surplus? Pales in comparison to what Barry wants to give away.

Haven't you heard that African leaders are trying to get people to stop giving money because all it does it disappear into the corruption of the continent.

There's more, straight from Barry's web page. What a treasure trove of insight into the intentions of the Obamascam:

“I'll be a president who finally sends a message to the black, white, and brown faces beyond our shores; from the halls of power to the huts of Africa that says, "You matter to America. Your future is our future. And our moment is now.” -- Barack Obama, Spartanburg, South Carolina, November 3, 2007

Obama "will provide new opportunities for a new generation of Americans to serve their country – in the State Department, in the US Agency for International Development (USAID), in the Peace Corps and in an expanded military."

Expanded military?

Maybe you want we should stay away from Barry's web site. He is giving away the store, creating bigger government, engaging in nation building -- Oh yeah, and he is a Chicago lovely human being politician who hangs out with terrorist and cop killers.

Do we need to rehash his stance on late-term abortion?

“In the 21st century, progress must mean more than a vote at the ballot box – it must mean freedom from fear and freedom from want. We cannot stand for the freedom of anarchy. Nor can we support the globalization of the empty stomach. We need new approaches to help people to help themselves. The United Nations has embraced the Millennium Development Goals, which aim to cut extreme poverty in half by 2015. When I’m president, they will be America’s goals.” -- Barack Obama, Chicago, October 2, 2007

"Barack Obama will spearhead an initiative to eliminate the global education deficit by 2015. An Obama administration will establish at least a $2 billion Global Education Fund to help fill the financing gap for primary education."

What's he going to do for us?

"Obama believes that we must use all available tools to demand that China use its influence to prevent Sudan and other regimes from acting contrary to international law and peace and security.

"Press China to Live Up to Human Rights Standards: From Tibet to cracking down on democracy and
religious freedom activists, China has failed to live up to international standards of human rights.

"Barack Obama believes the United States has to be frank with the Chinese about such failings and will press them to respect human rights."

The cop killer that Obama hangs out with is Ayers wife, Dohrn. Ayers girl friend at the time of his active terror campaign was killed when a bomb went off as they were making it. Ayers wanted that bomb to blow up soldiers at a dance, but it killed the right group instead (the three bombers).

All I hear by you Right Wingers is character assassination of Obama. We've heard it. It's a bunch of garbage. Now, can we talk about the issues.

You Right Wingers think Obama is Marxist, Socialist. He's not, but that's a legitimate issue.

Now, what is your foreign policy. Do you think we should get into war with Iran? Do you think we should set up a confrontation with Russia? How far do you want to go? What do you plan to gain other than your liking confrontation?

Do you honestly think Georgia didn't know that Russia would do something when they invaded S. Ossetia? Do you think they are that dumb that they didn't know Russia would react strongly?

And, if they choose to aggress on S. Ossetia in spite of that, why do you think we should be involved in covering their A..'s? Why should our tax dollars go to rebuilding Georgia?

Do you think that those separatist provinces, always with alignments to Russia, shouldn't be allowed their independence? If not, then why are they different than so many other people that wanted freedom? Like Georgia wanted to break from the Soviet Union.

What do you think will happen if we anger and punish Russia so much that Russia retaliates by not joining us in ridding Iran or any of those countries of nukes? Do you want Iran to have an ally in Russia? Why do you think it's wise to drive Russia away when their economy is growing and ours is shrinking? Don't you see what an alliance of Russia and China against us would do?

Now, McCain wouldn't think of all those things because he's too dumb. He can't envision what he should. Vote for McCain if it makes you feel all fuzzy and happy, but think about this. You are putting our country in terrible risk under his leadership. His foreign policy is too simplistic and childish. We need better. I don't know if Barack will do great, but he will do better. I trust him much more with our country's safety.

#84 Posted by GoneFishin on August 19, 2008 at 5:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)

AllGone, that explains why you're so out of touch.

"the bomb that killed [Ayers] three comrades was an anti-personnel weapon tightly packed with screws and nails. The Weathermen intended to set it off at New Jersey’s Fort Dix Army Base during a dance. Ayers admits that the bomb would have done "some serious work beyond the blast, tearing through windows and walls and, yes, people too." The victims would have included the women who had been brought to the dance as dates."

It was to have been their watershed moment, but fortunately, only the lovely human beings got killed.

Liberals: As always, questions, not answers, myths, not facts.

#85 Posted by GoneFishin on August 19, 2008 at 5:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)

AllGone, you really are fooled by yourself. Pretty simple find.

"The three persons nearest the bomb were killed, two others in the house were slightly injured, and the four story townhouse was reduced to rubble and caught fire.[1] Shortly before noon on Friday, March 6, 1970, people in the townhouse were assembling anti-personnel weapons armed with roofing nails and packed with dynamite.

"As the search for bodies continued days after the explosion, Wilkerson's parents made a televised appeal to their missing daughter to avoid needlessly risking the lives of searchers. They asked her to "let us know how many more people, if any, are still left in the ruins of our home", saying "more lives would be needlessly lost and only you have the key".

Here it is, complete with photo.

Thank you Algonquin999 for enlightening us about the Weathermen who were anti Viet Nam war. They were patriots to our principles. Also they certainly were far less violent than our government invading Viet Nam. Besides, this is irrelevant to Obama since he was about eleven at the time.

Well, I see none of the Right Wingers have any answers for my questions. That would require thinking, and they like being told what to think by their almighty Right Wing Neo Con leaders.

Regarding that legislation you say Obama voted against keeping born babies alive, Rejoice: Obama didn't vote for it as presented because it would have threatened Women's Rights of Choice. It would have threatened Roe v Wade.

Maybe that's not important to you since you have a very low opinion of women and their worth, but it is important to us women. It's our right to own our own bodies, our right of privacy, our right of choice that we will protect from its death by men like you. And, on behalf of the Republican Party, the majority of them are pro choice, but the party's been hijacked by you anti choice people.

I hope that the young women of today appreciate how women had to fight here in this country for equal rights. And you Right Wing Men have the gall to criticize the Islamics and Taliban. You feel the same way, even if you will not admit it.

Umleed, then you make that decision for you. You run your life and let others run theirs. That's the trouble, you want to run everyone else's life. Well, that's when others have to put their foot down.

Now Umleed, supposing your wife faced or might have faced a choice between her life and the life of a fetus about 7 months into gestation. Whom would you choose? And if you choose the fetus, then that's not saying much about your love for your wife, or maybe you don't like her much and would like to be rid of her.

Personally I wouldn't stay a minute with a man like you, and I'm sure the feeling is mutual because you'd surely want someone you can walk all over with your muddy boots.

BTW, I'm sure those brainwashed Mormon women feel about the same way about their lack of worth, being slaves to whatever the men decide, no matter how whacky.

That also, unfortunately is instilled in women of other religions also. That their life means nothing. They're here to serve men and obey them.

Also, there's a big difference between a child that is born and has a life of its own and a fertilized egg, invisible to the naked eye.

If a fetus has the ability to have life of its own, then there really doesn't have to be an either or, both the mother and the child can survive.

The fringes howl at one another while most people get turned off and bored by it. This is a sure fire way to drive democracy into the grave.

How are we going to save our country from being completely devoid of the ideals we are based on? The solution is deeper than a presidential election.

Surprisingly enough Americans have more in common than not but we waste our time arguing over what amounts to be probably 3% in differing personal opinions while "Rome" burns.

I am sure you are all very active and busy people. I wonder if you didn;t know eachother by your screen names and worked on a community project together that you wouldn't all be slapping eachother on the back, having a beer and saying how ya'll need to get together and do it again.
