Editorial: Estero has a true maestro

The arts can play a big role in a community’s enrichment, commerce and fun. Estero has potential to be a hotbed of all kinds of art. Florida Gulf Coast University is in its backyard, two private-sector playhouses are in the works and its neighbors — including Fort Myers, Bonita Springs and Naples — have quality arts opportunities to share.

Estero is lucky to have an experienced point man to beat the drums and talk up the potential for art in all its forms. Pat Distasio, 74, is a retired professor who has experience sowing seeds. He was in on the ground floor of what has become a diversified arts scene in downtown Naples. It has plays, concerts and galleries galore.

His Florida West Arts is headquartered at International Design Center by Miromar Outlets.

Welcome aboard in Estero, Mr. Distasio. This surely will be the start of something big, again.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
