NAPLES Weary officials from all over Collier County were grateful Tuesday morning for the few difficulties experienced.
Some 28,000 people in Collier are without power. It was not clear when it would be restored.
According to county spokesman John Torre 178 spent the night at the three high schools designated as shelters: 50 at Golden Gate, 72 at Immokalee and 56 at Palmetto Ridge, 40 of which were special needs residents.
The strongest wind gust registered so far was 68 mph right at the Collier Government Center.
The night went "generally well" said County Manager Jim Mudd. "This is a well-tested seasoned crew."
Airport-Pulling Road has reopened but the traffic light at Airport and Estey is out. Sheriff's deputies are directing traffic. INTERACTIVE MAP: View an interactive map of the road closures
Reports from our staff members in the field say that there is a foot of water over the road in the Lakewood and Queens Park communities off of Davis Boulevard in East Naples.
The traffic light at Bayshore and Shadowlawn drives is out; Collier County sheriffs officers are directing traffic.
Power is out in the Inomah neighborhood along Palm Street in East Naples.
The traffic signal at the intersection of Bonita Beach Road and U.S. 41 is out. Power in that area has been sporadic since about 7 a.m.
Two traffic lights are out on Marco Island - one at Barfield at Collier Boulevard and another at Barfield at San Marco Road.
FP&L reports more than 20,000 residents in Collier County are currently without electricity. Much of Marco Island got hit hard. LCEC reports 8,000 residents on Marco Island without power. LCEC reports 8,000 residents on Marco Island without power.
The National Weather Service reports that the eye of Fay has come ashore at Cape Romano, just south of Marco Island. Cape Romano also is the spot where Hurricane Wilma came ashore in Collier County in October 2005.
During the overnight hours, power outages have been reported on Marco Island, Isles of Capri and some parts of East Naples with some street flooding also being reported. Marco officials are requesting that residents stay off the roads until power has been restored and flooding recedes. There were also reports of isolated tornado sightings in the county.
Lights? Water? Phone? Cable? Let us know where you stand
At 8 a.m., the center of Tropical Storm Fay is about 30 miles east-southeast of Fort Myers and 35 miles southwest of Moore Haven on the west side of Lake Okeechobee.
Water on Everglades City is beginning to rise as most of the downtown area has at least a thin layer of water. But residents seem to think the storm has peaked.
"It could have been worse," said Marya Repko. "We still have phones and electricity." "It's good weather for the frogs," she added.
Roads on the way to Chokoloskee are passable with some debris and fallen power lines. Water is lapping up against the side of the road.
Fay is moving toward the north-northeast near 9 mph; that motion is expected to continue through today, the National Weather Service reports.
Maximum sustained winds from Fay remain around 60 mph. Tropical storm force winds stretch outward up to 125 miles from the center.
Fay is expected to produce four to eight inches of rainfall and possibly up to 10 inches across the Florida peninsula today. The National Weather Service in Miami is reporting that five to seven inches of rain has already fallen over Collier County in the past 24 hours, with another 2-4 inches possible as Fay moves through the area.
On this track the center will cross the coast of Southwest Florida around sunrise Tuesday morning and continue inland over central Florida later on Tuesday and Tuesday night.
The National Hurricane Center has dropped the hurricane warning for the Southwest Florida area and Florida peninsula, meaning Fay was classified as a tropical storm when it came ashore. Winds were sustained at 60 mph at 5 a.m., shortly before it came ashore at Cape Romano. Winds had to reach 74 mph for Fay to be classified as a Category 1 hurricane.

mdis,
Depending on where he is in collier, could have power out so phones could possibly be down...nothing really bad happening. some flooding on south end of Marco Island. Wind is pretty bad, but some thunderstorms are worse down here....No reports of bad accidents or fires or anything for you to worry about...Cell phones towers could be affected. happens a lot in florida, especially during thunderstorms. We want to keep some of the rain, just don't want the storm surge. sorry we can't send it your way right now...I know your brother will be fine...

ty mothernature - I think he may be without power after reading about the wind and power blips in the Estates - thanks for the heads up about the cell towers - never thought about that!
I am sure I will catch up with him later today - or he will call me ASAP - he knows I am a worry wart!
Thanks for the reassurance!
Continue being safe!

Thank goodness that there has not been any serious damage. I have to comment on the news team on channel 7. I felt your comments last night were very inappropriate, yes, there is a joy that we were "spared" but to say that Lee & Charlotte were spared and screams of joy in the background to be heard by your viewing area (we live in North Naples) really bothered me. Everyone matters when disaster is coming toward us, and if we are "spared" we should be prepared to help others in need!

OPEN THE GATES to drain off the water!!! We have tons of standing water in the estates... and still more rain coming in. I will need a boat to get to the road.

Just heard Naples City Manager Bill Moss demands Naples employees be at their desks by 10:00 a.m. this morning -- or use a vacation day for being absent (WHAT????) So -- what happens to the employees living east of Airport Road (closed) trying to get to City Hall - wait at the edge of Airport Road for the water to subside?...

North Naples near Airport & Orange Blossom, lots of rain & wind, no power outages, did have a blip, but it didn't go completely off. We still have cable & internet. Was on my cell earlier with a local radio station and that worked too. We got lucky on this one folks!

There are numerous cable/internet and phone outages all over collier county. the crews will be on scene after weather subdues. A lot of it is caused by commercial power.

I'm about 2 miles off Marco Island, power came back on at 6 am, it was off most of the night. We lost a tree in the front yard, I havent gone out to look for more yet. wind is dying down a bit now.
the water in the lake is really high, but I dont think the road is flooded. It was a rocky road last night here.

you can actually put your home address (or anyones )and see what is the situation right over there home......my daughter does not have a powere so I went on line and actually told her the eye was actually passing right over her house (2600 hundred block of 28th Ave SE)(off Everglades Blvd) !!
#35 Posted by coonslady on August 19, 2008 at 9:04 a.m. (Suggest removal)
perhaps the roads would not be under water if the county fired one $120,000 administrator bureaucrat and hired 4 $30,000 road maintenace workers to keep inlets, swales and ditches clear of debris that blocks drainage

I'm off Desoto Blvd in GG estate. I only had power flickers from 5am-9am. The only damage I can see so far is a 20 foot pine (it was old looked like it was about to die anyway) fell right across my driveway but other than that a few limbs down and lots of standing water.

CURFEW THAT STARTED AT 11:00 P.M. last night, before the storm.
ricky369.........
I think we are inteligent beings and no one should have to tell you to get off the streets before a storm. We are all in need of a great deal of goods BEFORE THE STORM. When property is left vulnerable after a storm is one thing, but even then I find being locked out of your own property before or after a storm unacceptable. This storm wasn't going to be here until 5:00 A.M. This decision was insane.
Remember Wilma when after the storm you couldn't get back into downtown with gas for your chainsaw or generator? And no gas available downtown.
No one should have made that decision for us when the storm had not even arrived.

Called my son on Marco----no power, phone, etc. a Comcast subscriber. I live 3rd Ave SW. No problems, just standing water. About 6-8 inches everywhere. Don't know about cable. Don't pay for it.

Hard to believe but the NDN and their deilvery people were respsonsbile for a large portion of the flooding in our neighborhood.
I'm not sure of the decision making process but the delivery people delivered papers which were either immediately rendered unreadable due to the volume of rain (if you could find your paper) or instant drain plugs for our street drains.
I personally cleaned all the drains in my neghborhood at the height of the storm because the two drains nearest my house were blocked with 3 - 4 bagged newspapers, casuing about a foot of flooding...when I saw that, I headed out to see what other drains were blocked...sure enough, 90% of the drains were blocked with NDN Newspapers at the bottom of the piles.
Deliverying newspapers in that wind and rain was not very smart for either the delivery people or the customers...just wait and deliver it later this afternoon or tomorrow rather than put your people at so much risk and contributing to the flooding.

This one was a yawner...i live off Collier just south of Immokalee. The eye when right up Collier i heard, that would explain why the wind woke me up at 5am...No damage here except for a couple of trees down and some road flooding due to clogged sewers. Other than that, everything is good-we have power, cable and internet (obviously).

If your COMCAST TV is still out, then you need to call them to get a signal.
My TV was out until a few minutes ago... black screen. The 3rd time I called them, the tech had me unplug the box and pull the cord on the cable IN... wait 45 seconds and then plug back in. Then the Comcast tech sends a signal and I had to wait several minutes for it to run a cycle.
After the cycle ran... the correct time was showing on the box but not the little circle that is suppose to be on showing the box is on too. So he had me press the power button on the box and the TV started working. I guess Comcast has some bugs if a service call is required to get service running again after a power outage! And how come the first two techs I spoke to did not have me do the signal thing??

I hear that the WalMart at the corner of US41 and Immokalee has been without power all day; they can't process any transactions. They have been sending their employees to the Super WalMart on Immokalee Road near I75 (Juliet Blvd), or just sending them home. So if anyone was thinking of going out and picking up a few items, you know which WalMart to avoid.

I am in Columbia, SC but my parents are in Golden Gate near SJN high school.
No power, no cable, one tree is down (Large sea hibiscus that fell after Charley and Wilma, but can't save it this time).
This morning Tropicana Blvd had over a ft of water or more in some areas. Probably worse near 32nd Ave. I remember that area being prone to flooding back when Andrew came through.
The main road to that part of GG near SJN, 53rd St , was blocked by cops this morning.. I think that was just as a precaution to prevent unnecessary traffic.
When my brother went out to Burger King (off GG Parkway) for lunch he said that things were clearing up.
Also, my parents told me that their friends near Everglades City, in Chokoloskee are doing fine.
Good luck to all, and stay safe.

Anyone checking the continuing updates from the National Hurricane Center on Fay...the storm is getting better organized AND the pressure is dropping over land!
One of the spaghetti track models yesterday showed her going back out into open water (the Atlantic) and looping back toward the Gulf on a westerly track. Seems this model had some good data in and Fay is following along! I just hope when it gets to the Atlantic that it stays out there!

BTV - You saw that too, huh? Wasn't there a storm some years ago that did just that? We've been in FL since '89 (went through Andrew '92 in Homestead). I can't remember the details, but I'm sure I remember seeing or hearing about a storm that hit land, turned around, and hit it again on the same coast - or something like that.
