In the "close in" part of GGE, we are having power go on and off. The winds are making the hurricane shutters clang sometimes. Time to go and shut down...too many power blips.

There is LOTS OF STANDING WATER in the Estates!! Are the drainage gates open in the canals to drain us off??? Or is that a stupid question?? HELLO... ARE YOU THERE? Are the gates open??

Re: #7 Hi Blackcat. Haven't you heard about the devices like iPhones, Blackberries or others with internet capability? Internet access works quite well and even without power using this kind of access.
Hi tootsie; Well switching to a satellite provider when we have so many storms, may not make you happy either. I had both satellite and cable where I lived in Central FL, but whenever we had a bad storm the satellite was gone. Crumbcast isn't very good but my friends further north in the state aren't happy with their cable provider either.
We got power back a bit before 10 AM. We were out only a short while (about 2 hours). I had to shut off all battery back ups then as our dogs and the cat were going nuts with the beeping. So I just stayed offline and read webpages with the iPhone.
I was watching WINK TV via a battery powered TV and they said the storm had stalled over Golden Gate City. We aren't in the city, but not too far away. Boy it sounded pretty bad then.
I am venturing out to drain some water from the pool. If I see damage, I will be back to report. I expect to find some fronds and limbs down. I opened one of the storm shutters earlier to check on the pool and pool cage. All looked OK.
About SFWMD...supposedly per Mr. Clarence Tears (no comment), the weirs are on an automated system. I watched him tell this to the County Commissioners on Monday. I don't want to get started about SFWMD...

I can hear generators running in Golden Gate City.
#25 Posted by glassman on August 19, 2008 at 11:52 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Found only some very minor damage when a tree branch crushed a light fixture in the back. Didn't check the rain gauge as it only goes to 5 inches and it was full already.
We did have some bigger branches down from the big pines, but nothing beyond damage from a heavy thunderstorm. Still, I would not want one of these storms to go through often.
Alas no NDN in the box...wherefore art thou NDN?

Some of you people are ridiculous! 28,000 people without power, roads closed, people stuck in their homes becasue of flooding and some of you that do have power and access are womaning because you have no cable? Get a life man!

Southwest side of Golden Gate CIty...no power since around 2:30am. Still no power.
BlackCat post #7, -- out here in Golden Gate City we have generators because every time the trees sway we lose power. Thank you Florida Flash & Flicker.

Power back on here (just south of Immokalee Rd near Gulf Coast High School) as of 3PM. It was out for about six hours. Cable, phone and internet never went down to my knowledge.
Lots of water standing as to be expected but it does seem to be draining off quickly. A few tree limbs down but no other damage.
BTV I had to chuckle about your comment concerning your pets going nuts with the noise from the battery back up units. My dog goes nuts also anytime the power goes off and I believe that is the very thing that scares him, the beeping noise.
Glad to see that most everyone made it through with little problems.

Our cable in Naples Park was out from early this morning but is back on now...what's with Comcast??? Aren't all their cables underground??? And this was only a tropical storm! I recently switched my land-line phone to their digital voice to save money and here we go...no phone today except for my cell phone. Our power flickered but we did not lose it, thankfully.

#32 Posted by Native on August 19, 2008 at 7:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Never lost power, cable, internet, phone, cell, etc. Although, I now have water front property!!! The weird part is I drove over to my office, which is about 2 miles away, (Courthouse area), and there was no power in the building, however, the street lights were working.

Never lost cable or internet but lost power at 7AM (on Bonita Beach). It came back at 7 PM (go figure).
#34 Posted by jim09091 on August 19, 2008 at 7:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)
We lost power at about 5am here in the estates, but it was repaired as soon as things calmed down. (around 2pm) If people would take care of thier dead trees in thier yards we probably would not have lost power ( three diff. people had fallen trees on lines just on our street!) Of course we still don't have cable and it is 10:52p...I hate Comcast they are as slow as molasses!
#35 Posted by ryan555 on August 19, 2008 at 10:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)
valnaples... Comcast is above-ground in a large majority of this area and is usually first to go.

No power in PINE RIDGE since 5 am 8/19. Multiple calls to FPL get the truth about reconnect for a change - NO PREDICTION as the crews have not yet gotten near the area.
From yesterday's 25,000 without power, last night left 13,000 without. This is not much consolation for those of us in the latter group.
Repairs are being made in order of number of customers served. Largest blackouts are fixed first, then the others.
After 20 years of living here, I've finally HAD IT! I no longer find it amusing or tolerable to deal with storm aftermaths. Nothing could make up for power outages averaging 8 to 12 hours every other year. Wilma gave me a week off my FPL bill (no power).
Unfortunately for me, a brand new generator didn't work, so I am totally without power for the duration of this blackout. Between myself and my geriatric animals, this has been too trying on my already limited resources.
Doesn't FPL have a responsibility to have enough employees to repair blackouts within a certain time frame? For public health reasons? Our rates continue to rise, and the service continues to be barely passable.
Just one more area where America fails to care for its citizens.

We got off pretty easy, compared to Wilma. Power went out about 7am, and it was back on again at 11:30 am, so I won't argue that. Wilma= power out 4 1/2 days, Fay= power out 4 1/2 hours. I think LCEC cleaned up their act a little. The cable may have been on the whole time the power was off, we don't know. If so, I'm impressed, as a few years ago, we couldn't keep Comcast connected properly on a good, clear day. We'd average about 1 outage every week or so. Insane.
#38 Posted by oyvey1973 on August 20, 2008 at 11:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Well, our cable went out about 5am in the Estates (GG Blvd), followed about 5 minutes later by the power. Everything came back on about 7am. We WOULD have had it back on yesterday, BUT... there was a tree down the street that fell on a power line, then when I saw the Asplund truck come down the street I got happy - then when he turned around and went back up the street I got sad because they drove past this tree TWICE... then when I got in my car and chased down the driver to point out the tree, he said "I don't speak English". So thanks to that, we had to wait another 24 hours, all food has spoiled, and it was hot as heck in here last night. I don't care what language somebody speaks, but when your working in Emergency conditions SPEAK ENGLISH TOO!!!!!!!!! Or at least have someone with you that DOES!!!!! Everybody was trying to call into FPL but couldn't get anything other than the recorded message. I was mad as heck all day yesterday and all night last night. How can you be out LOOKING for trees on power lines and miss a BIIIIG tree TWICE? And then not be able to understand when someone TELLS you?
