FORT MYERS Youth ruled the fairways at Olde Hickory Golf & Country Club in Fort Myers.
St. John Neumann freshman Michael Primavera earned medalist honors at Monday’s Class 1A-District 18 boys golf tournament. Primavera’s 1-over-par 73 was one shot better than teammate and fellow Class of 2012 member Edward Figueroa, and two shots ahead of Community School’s seventh-grader Ryan Celano.
The Primavera-Figueroa exacta led Neumann to the team title. The Celtics shot 316.
“I’m a little overwhelmed,” Celtics coach Richie Packish said. “I don’t think St. John Neumann has ever advanced this far in golf.”
Senior Sonny Brock (84) and sophomore Michael Naretta (85) rounded out Neumann’s top four.
Joining the Celtics at next Monday’s Class 1A-Region 6 tournament in Bradenton will be Estero (325) and first-time qualifier Gateway Charter (328).
Celano, Community School freshman Spencer Ciesla (82) and Seacrest’s James Drew (82) qualified for regionals as individuals.
Figueroa posted the early low round on a day when poor weather forced a one-hour delay. But he didn’t mind that his 74 was overtaken by his good friend. Figueroa and Primavera have been golfing together since age 6. Estimated rounds played together: in the hundreds.
“That’s the only person I’d like to finish second to. I wouldn’t like finishing second to anyone else,” Figueroa said. “We’re pretty competitive. I beat him, he beats me. It’s always like that.”
“We always try to beat each other, and it’s usually pretty close,” added Primavera, whose round included three bogeys and two birdies.
Packish noted that his young standouts possess poise beyond their years.
“You can’t tell that they’re freshmen,” he said. “They’re very composed. They play competitive golf just about every weekend.”
Celano, whose 75 was a dozen shots better than his district tournament debut as a sixth grader last year, drained a 12-footer on the final hole for his lone birdie. Celano said he hits his drives about 215 yards, which means plenty of lengthy second shots.
“It was long for me, so I got up and down from everywhere. I don’t hit it very far,” Celano said.
Primavera, Figueroa and Celano along with Gateway juniors Dustin Suh (76) and Jesse Lowe (79) and Estero senior Ryan Clase (80) earned all-district honors for finishing in the top six.
Estero, which finished runner-up in last week’s Lee County Athletic Conference tournament at nearby The Plantation, managed to advance despite having no rounds in the 70s.
“We didn’t make any putts,” Wildcats coach Jeff Estes said. “We shot 306 last week on a harder golf course.”
Naples (342) missed qualifying for regionals by one spot. Senior Tanner Hoben led the Golden Eagles with an 84.
Following Naples were Community School (346), Seacrest (381) and Golden Gate (430).
South Fort Myers, which fielded only three golfers, was led by junior Alex Felice (87).
