Letter of the Day: The point? Who cares?

Editor, Daily News:

The Sunday article about the Robert P. Schwartz Trust was not only not worthy of front-page coverage, but not worthy of any coverage in any newspaper.

If this is the type of investigative reporting to which the staff of the Daily News aspires, then Bob Woodward can certainly relax.

Your team has done a great job on many other occasions, but this is just plain drivel.

What an invasion of a family’s privacy.

Elaine Stanley, Naples

Letter: Missed it

Editor, Daily News:

Thanks, Daily News, for your front-page recognizing Labor Day and the hard workers.

Oops!

Gervais Audette, Naples

Letter: On whose side now?

Editor, Daily News:

You have to wonder how far the left will go in its hatred of President Bush — Michael Moore and former Democratic National Convention Chairman Don Fowler chuckling that there is a God and he is on their side.

Why? Because Hurricane Gustav was scheduled to hit New Orleans the day the Republican Convention was to start. These people are sick!

I wonder if the lefties who write to the Daily News will distance themselves from such comments.

I am waiting! But I doubt they will!

Joe Kiernan, Bonita Springs

Letter: Why, pray tell?

Editor, Daily News:

It occurs to me that Democrats are a very religious bunch in spite of their secular viewpoint.

But, I notice they always seem to pray for all the wrong things. They pray for more American casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan. They pray for hurricanes to hit New Orleans.

They pray that Dick Cheney goes hunting again. They pray for indications of global warming. They pray that the economy tanks and people suffer for it.

They pray for a severe home-mortgage crisis. They pray that American air strikes will kill women and children in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They pray that more school shootings occur so an anti-gun agenda can be advanced. They pray that more people get sick from eating tainted food so the size of government agencies can grow larger and larger.

I always wondered, though, why they prayed for Halliburton to be found as an evil corporation. After all, Lady Bird Johnson was the biggest stockholder.

Robert Bartunek, Naples

Letter: Can they do better?

Editor, Daily News:

John McCain’s age really is irrelevant.

Ronald Reagan was 72 when he was elected to his first term in office. Nelson Mandela was 75 when he was elected president of South Africa. Golda Meir was “only” 70. She was 73 when she led her country in the Yom Kippur War.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, with two years of executive experience running her state, a few years running her town and the commission she chaired, is only running for vice president. By contrast, Sen. Barack Obama, with three years in the U.S. Senate and a handful of years in his state Senate (where he doesn’t have to run anything but his mouth) and a career as a “community organizer” (somebody who runs around with a clipboard trying to get petitions signed), has the effrontery to run for president.

That is truly presumptuous. Some might use the word “chutzpah.”

To say McCain picked Palin just because she is a woman is an insult to women in general and Palin in particular. Likewise ditching the most-qualified candidate in favor of a neophyte, and then not even bothering to put her on the ticket, is an insult to women in general and to Hillary Clinton in particular.

The Democrats need to reassess their attitudes toward women — and come up with a better plan.

Ana Gomez-Mallada, Lighthouse Point, Fla., Secretary, Florida Federation of Republican Women

Letter: Does this fit?

Editor, Daily News:

Letter-writer Gordon Vanscoy, you have a good-looking son and his hat celebrated the U.S. Olympians.

For that I give you kudos.

But the athletes were not at the dinner table. Do you wear hats at the table at home, either inside or out on your lanai? If so, I will excuse your ill manners at the restaurant.

Owners have the right to establish a dress code. Don’t you agree?

Allen Wolf, Naples

Letter: Penny for reader’s thoughts

Editor, Daily News:

“Schoolgirl to sex kitten”?

It doesn’t get much worse than that piece in the Online Today feature in the Local & State section in the Sunday Daily News.

It says Daily News staff writer Sheila Mesulam “opens up (about penny loafers): ‘And even at 7 years old, I knew I had to have a pair.’ ”

The title is sick. I am sure every pedophile in America is dreaming about this one.

And, I could use some extra work as an editor for your paper.

Please, give me a call. Really.

Nori St. Paul, Naples

Letter: Can’t hold back

Editor, Daily News:

I have lived in Naples for more than six years and am constantly surprised at the obvious errors that make it into your newspaper.

I have traveled throughout most of this country, and several dozen foreign countries, and can honestly say that the Daily News is the absolute worst paper I have ever seen for the number of typos, spelling errors and poor word usage that make it into print.

The front page on Tuesday takes the cake. A sub-headline says “Levies held as Gustav ... .”

Levies? A levy is a tax. A levee is what holds back water.

How can something so simple and clear-cut make it onto the front page?

Rich Hamilton, Naples

Letter: Can they afford it?

Editor, Daily News:

To the left of Tueday’s headline it says, “Levies held as Gustav ... made landfall near Cocodrie, Louisiana.”

Does that mean the levees held but were heavily taxed?

Bob Beckwith, Naples

Letter: This time, let’s do the right thing

Editor, Daily News:

Hurricane Katrina raged through New Orleans on a Sunday three years ago.

At that time, Cuba amassed 1,100 of its medically elite, catastrophe-trained, emergency-response units at Havana’s airport, eager to save lives in New Orleans. Our government did not accept Cuba’s help and we know what happened in that tragedy.

A few days ago Gustav, a Category 4 hurricane, devastated Cuba and was on its way to New Orleans to do the same. Today our government seems to be ready and able to assist New Orleans in such emergencies.

This, being an election year, has helped our government to focus better. If our government officials are able to reflect and do the right thing this time, not only will they be able to aid New Orleans, but also offer assistance to Cuba.

Helping Cuba would not only be the right thing to do but an excellent opportunity to showcase our foreign policy.

Juan Puerto, M.D. , Immokalee

Letter: Plans are too big

Editor, Daily News:

The Naples Design Review Board made the correct decision to reject the “big plans for the downtown cabana bar.”

Over 38 owners at Bayfront have written in opposition to the plan to expand the cabana bar from 1,000 to 3,619 square feet. The size and magnitude of this proposed building is inappropriate in the city of Naples, and the proposed building would be an eyesore.

The design and color do not fit with the beautiful architecture of Bayfront. This expanded cabana bar also has not one, but two bars, and seating for 180 people. Two bars in one facility is too much.

Access to the waterfront will also be diminished by this large facility. The waterfront should belong to all the residents of and visitors to Naples.

If appealed to the City Council, the council needs to reject this design.

Dona Erkenbeck, Naples

Letter: ’This crazy plan’

Editor, Daily News:

As a homeowner at Bayfront, I am very concerned regarding the absurd modifications that a wealthy developer is trying to force on the Bayfront community.

As you know, this structure will take the place of the quaint cabana bar currently existing there. This elaborate modification will bring additional noise, traffic and loud music to the development in addition to blocking the beautiful bay views and boat-dock access for many people.

Please make the community aware of this crazy plan that needs to be stopped immediately.

Douglas Olmsted, Naples

Letter: Sex education

Editor, Daily News:

Letter-writer Barry Willoughby on Thursday writes that he wished Sen. Barack Obama had been more precise when asked about the moment of inception of human life.

I, for one, preferred Obama’s thoughtful answer to John McCain’s snappy retort. I think we should support having an insightful person at the helm of our nation — a person who can deal with complexity and ambiguity with cogent analysis and decisive action.

McCain’s colleagues have remarked often about his quixotic nature and his quickness to anger. These are not attractive qualities when dealing with the forces at work in the world today.

As to Willoughby’s primary concern, I know of no one who is in favor of abortion, including Obama. His position is to work to reduce the incidence of abortion dramatically.

The current administration’s stance contributes directly to the problem. Its adherence to “abstinence education” has been proven to exacerbate the problem. Its doctrinaire opposition to sex education ignores the fact that the majority of parents are unlikely or unable to address this important piece of child rearing.

This leaves youngsters to sift through myths, fables and ill-understood facts just at the time when they are the most vulnerable.

John G. Lynch, Naples

Letter: Challenge this

Editor, Daily News:

The arrogance of Collier County Public Schools Superintendent Dennis Thompson is truly astonishing.

A Johnny-come-lately to Collier County, he has deigned to diagnose us to be both significantly psychologically challenged and disoriented because of the massive change that is occurring in the school system. (Thursday’s Daily News). This smoke screen is too transparent to serve his purpose of obfuscation and should not go unanswered.

The truth is that Collier’s citizens are not as upset by the so-called massive change of decreased funding as by:

1. Thompson’s proposals to address the issues such as privatizing some services.

2. The very questionable — to say the least — manner in which three members of the School Board appointed him to the superintendency. It is regrettable that the matter did not go to trial so the facts could be aired.

3. The $800,000 to $1 million cost of this terrible act — an amount denied to the classrooms where the students are taught.

Thompson should surely be aware of these three reasons. If he is not, I invite him to note the resounding defeat of one of his School Board sponsors in recent elections. It attests more accurately to our psychological health and critical concerns.

Should Thompson’s psyche continue to prevent him from trying to know us and the real needs of our students, it would be in our mutual interests if he sought employment elsewhere.

Cornelius (Pat) Cacho, Naples

Letter: Safety first?

Editor, Daily News:

When I heard about Vinny Angiolillo’s campaign antic of riding an elephant along Airport-Pulling Road, I thought to myself, “This is to convince anyone to vote for him?”

Think of the dangers near an accident scene where the drivers are drawn to watch, often causing traffic problems and further accidents. Did this sheriff’s candidate not think of the dangers such a spectacle could cause on this busy road in Collier County?

Safety on our roads was not his priority that day, just the election.

Luckily, the voters have made their choice and chosen a more responsible candidate for Collier County sheriff.

Jaclyn M. Ouellette, Naples

Letter: Not in favor of it?

Editor, Daily News:

A letter to the editor on Aug. 4 by David Goldstein stated, in part, that Planned Parenthood “is not in favor of abortion on demand.”

If the above statement is true, then why did Planned Parenthood provide 289,750 abortions for the year 2006-07?

The unbelievable number of executions is according to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s annual report. This equals one-fourth of the total 1.2 million children who have been disemboweled, dismembered and trashed per year.

As per the resultant infanticide holocaust, Planned Parenthood grossed about $1 billion, which includes over $337 million garnered from many reluctant taxpayers in paid government grants.

Also, with the help of your tax money, Planned Parenthood has built a 21,000-square-foot health-care and abortion center in Aurora, Ill. The building is the biggest abortion clinic in the United States. A typical-size facility is 2,500 square feet.

According to the June 28 Wall Street Journal, Planned Parenthood is planning to add many more edifices of horror in various parts of the country.

As previously mentioned, if Planned Parenthood is not in favor of abortion on demand, it sure has a corrupted way of supporting the above statement.

Gordon Skrede, Naples

Letter: Spare us the insights

Editor, Daily News:

Responding to Fred Ruedy’s Thursday Letter of the Day, citing the slow rate of road construction, has he got a lot to learn about “paradise.”

First, it’s not perfect. The vast majority of us who originated from “up North,” like Ruedy, know it’s not perfect where we came; otherwise we would have stayed in the subzero winter temperatures shoveling our sidewalks!

My parents moved our family to Florida in 1972. Most of our neighbors and friends were from Minnesota, Ohio, Michigan or the New England states.

Many of our community business owners, professionals and civil servants and city and county employees originate from somewhere besides Naples and have brought their experience and expertise with them. Many have taken the steps to get involved in different ways as volunteers and advocates for improving our fast-developing community, rather than just commenting as a passive observer.

Ruedy questions “poor contractors, worker skills and poor oversight.” What brought the Interstate 35 bridge down in Minnesota? Catastrophic structural failure from design and engineering flaws. Certainly that had poor skills and professional oversight behind its collapse.

So, Mr. Ruedy, as you sit and contemplate how things are done here in “paradise” compared to Minnesota, feel free to get involved. Otherwise, the bumper sticker that’s around these parts of “paradise” may apply to you.

It reads: “We Don’t Care How You Did It Up North.”

Jay Thomson, Naples

Letter: Dream on

Editor, Daily News:

While most of us are tightening our belts, driving less, spending less and making our dollars count, Naples Mayor Bill Barnett and the City Council are considering capital expenditures with the purchase of Renaissance Village.

The city has cut its budget and laid off workers, yet still refuses to admit it cannot keep spending taxpayers’ money on “dreams” in today’s economic times.

How do we fund this land purchase? We issue a bond that will be paid back by increased property taxes.

Barnett and his crew fail to see the reality of the increased expenses of building and maintaining the park once it is complete. This is not the proper time for city government to burden its citizens with increased taxes and overhead. We agreed to the Naples Zoo and are paying for it — let’s take a break for awhile.

Another developer can develop the downtown property, thus providing the city with an increased tax base. The city of Naples and Barnett cannot have all its “dreams.”

Bruce Friedman, Naples

Letter: Do it for Leo, Juan, Elvria

Editor, Daily News:

As a Collier County teacher and taxpayer whose money helps fund public education, I say keep our custodians.

They work hard for long hours with little pay and no complaints. To fire them is wrong — it’s even close to criminal given the current economic crisis and high unemployment.

What will they do without a paycheck and health benefits? As Leo Pozo puts it, “I’m 75 years old. Who will hire me, and how can I afford to work at two-thirds the pay with no health benefits?”

Leo has worked at Lely High School for 17 years and has two grandchildren attending the school. He’s family. It isn’t right to fire him and outsource to strangers.

If the school district needs to save money, and who doesn’t, listen to the Teamsters. If we can get better health coverage and save the district $12 million while saving 250 jobs, why not? I’m certainly willing to have my health care renegotiated, if it means saving our janitors.

Why is Superintendent Dennis Thompson dismissing the Teamsters’ bid? And why isn’t he considering other bids — as promised?

The deadline is drawing near. I don’t want to see Bernardo, Leo, Juan, Elvira and the other janitors leave. Instead of targeting them, why not have everyone on the school payroll — from the superintendent to the staff — take a

1 percent pay cut and use those funds to keep our custodians?

It would hurt, but I’m willing to make the sacrifice. I’m willing to place people before profit. It would build community.

I would also buy time for the district to seriously examine saving money by reworking health care, instead of jilting janitors.

Karen Dwyer, Ph.D., Naples

Letter: Change worth the price?

Editor, Daily News:

Congratulations to all those teachers who were responsible for the tremendous increase in the number of students taking Advanced Placement exams, an increase that has built steadily over the last 10 years that high schools have been on the 4-by-4 block schedule.

The astonishing fact is that the current Collier County Public Schools administration has already begun the dismantling of the very schedule which produced these outstanding results and put three of our high schools in the top 1,000 of the country.

This year AP classes have half the time to teach the same amount of material compared with the previous years, while operating on an alternating-day schedule. Next year the dismantling may very well be complete with a straight seven-period day resulting in the loss of four credits over a student’s four years in high school and a diminished opportunity to take AP classes.

Both our central administration and our School Board should consider very carefully the tremendous impact that these changes will have on our most successful students in Collier County.

Allen Miller, Naples, Teacher, Naples High School

Letter: The proper course?

Editor, Daily News:

As a lifelong union worker and therefore a Democrat, it has been made abundantly clear to me since moving to Bonita Springs eight years ago that I was in the minority as to my party choice.

Also made clear, by Republicans, was the fact that no matter how dire the circumstances become, the proper course must always be the one we are on. To admit we have caused the problems which exist in this country just isn’t in their makeup. After all, the Democrats have controlled things all along this path on which we find ourselves.

Yeah, right. I have read that so much, you almost had me believing it. Families have lost their houses, their ability to find a job and, maybe most of all, their dignity. No, that’s not right. Most of all, they have lost their sons and daughters in an illegal war that has cost this country billions upon billions of dollars, while an elite corps has profited beyond even their wildest greed-fostered dreams.

The past eight years will go down in history as the time when our country was taken over by the corporations that used to have a soul, and would pay a day’s wage for a day’s work.

No more, my friend, no more. Bottom line is now, in fact, the bottom line.

Tom Richardson, Bonita Springs

Letter: Our dad and his job

Editor, Daily News:

Terry Fedelem is a gifted Neapolitan. Much of the beauty of Naples that many of us expect can be traced to his venerable efforts and tireless work ethic.

In 1975, he began a career with the city of Naples, the fruits of which transformed a sleepy town into a tropical destination. The incredible medians, the award-winning parks and downtown Naples are living examples of his exceptional talents and leadership.

To us, he is our father. To Naples, he is its Renaissance man. Unfortunately for him (and the residents of Naples), his unswerving devotion and unmatched expertise will not prevent him from being cut loose from public service.

As of Oct. 1, 2008, the city has eliminated our dad’s job. No one can argue that budget cuts are necessary. However, his diligence has secured millions of dollars in grants and his knowledge has saved the city hundreds of thousands of dollars.

This is not about a bottom line. This is about integrity and loyalty.

If you have met our dad, you know the quality of his character. He deserves better.

Three years ago, the city of Naples declared Sept. 9 as “Terry Fedelem Day” for his dedicated service. This Sept. 9, please let him know you care.

Jennifer Fedelem Lancaster, Naples, Lorna Fedelem Stewart, M.D., Tallahassee

Ms. Mallada,

What can I say, McCain keeps letting me down to the point that it may just be to hard for me to vote for him at this point! He clearly picked Palin as an act of political posturing. There is no way to explain away how you can chose your running mate for leader of the free world after one breif meeting. Now I question everyting about him. The last thing we need is somone that will do or say anything just to drum up some votes!!!

Repeat by "popular" request, see below!

What a country!!!

Millions of people will get a chance to vote for a "COMMUNITY ORGANIZER" with dubious ASSOCIATES/FRIENDS for the past twenty years Ayers...Rev Wrong...Farakon...Rezko...and on and on. Oh I forgot, less than three years in the US Senate and most of that time he has been running for president.

If that describes a person who can "CHANGE" and shake up Washington, pass the kool aide for everyone to drink!

The only way to affect change is to change our procedures. Term limits...line item veto...bills that stand alone with no attachments...immediate accountabilty (there's got to be technology to accomplish this)...abolish both houses when public opinion has no faith in their abilities to continue running the country's business and call for immediate elections...no more "pork" to name a few.

Instead of attacking/expressing all your thoughts to each other and accomplish nothing on a daily basis, write, call, fax, write and e-mail
your elected officals.

How about the treatment in the media from the left regarding a 17 year old girl with child. That alone should energize 51% or more not to vote for Braco (for allowing it even though he is against it) and Joe Personality who could care less anyway (see Joe's personality during Clarence Thomas hearings).

GROW UP YA'LL!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH REGARDLESS OF YOUR PARTY AFFILIATION!

WE THE PEOPLE" AFFECT CHANGE AS A "MAJORITY". HELLO...IS ANYONE listening???

John McCain is a HERO! He saved Alaska (and its oil) for America! By picking Sarah Palin, he ABORTED (Oh, don't you conservative Republicans love that word?) her plans and support to have Alaska secede from the union. Now that's foreign policy personified. As "Commander of the Alaska National Guard, there is no telling the devastation she could have unleashed on the lower 48. It probably would be very much like that which she inflicted on her family. She's very dedicated as her actions and words she evidently failed to pass on to here daughter Bristol. Maybe next time for both. A Pro Life "coup" as the GOP spinsters are proclaiming wildly! The hysteria is beyond belief. Thank goodness for taping. It will be very incriminating in the years to come.

Gordon Skrede and his "identification" of the Planned Parenthood "scheme and plan" to promote abortions exposes a couple of things beyond his medieval values and "conceptions".

Skrede points to the "big, expensive" facilities that Planned Parenthood has. I seems he thinks they should perform abortions on demand in a tent. That will probably be the case along with the coat hangers when they repeal Roe vs. Wade and criminalize abortion.

Oh well, at least they won't execute "transgressors" (or will they?) they are "pro-life. No they probably will convict and sentence those abortion criminals to "community service". You know, something like collecting "wet dream" sperm and female eggs frozen for extended periods and later discarded for various reasons. After all, there is life and a "soul" in every one of those "rascals".

P.S. I'm waiting to see the "deluge" of ltte about tne NDN Neopolitan Section article on sex in their Tuesday edition. Where will the "picket lines" form?

Aww C'mon Pat Cacho... I thought you and the rest of Kathy Curatolo's gang would still be celebrating her win. Especially getting that whopping 10% out of the 19.2% of the voting population of Collier County that cared enough to vote!! Hmmm let's see I would say between the Chamber, developers, bankers, and lets not forget lawyers... Pretty much makes up that 10%.

In the words of Kathy Curatolo whose actions say "Do as I say NOT as I do".... Get over it, Mr. Cacho... its in the Paaaaaassssttt!

Rejoice.....resident racist......as your friend Gonefishin has disappeared perhaps you would like to comment on Sarah Palin's connection with
Ted Stevens...the senior Republican Senator from Alaska who has been charged on 7 counts of corruption.....

after all she sat on several boards with him and he has endorsed her several times...which...suddenly the powers to be have confiscated the videos

is she "guilty by association"?

Post #9: Pat Cacho wrote an excellent letter. The community and Dr. Thompson are not in step with each other. The community cares about the school system. I am not sure Dr. Thompson cares about the community.

Great post #2

Thank you!

Continue to remind us daily what we have to do in order to affect change.

I sure will.

It amazes me what is so simple to do is not being done?

I agree that contacting your elected officals is easy but people on average find it difficult to do for some reason. The people on this blog find it more effective and rewarding to converse with each other and accomplish nothing.

Your right!

Have a great night and a better tomorrow.

again oldtimer you publish a lie....Biden's daughter is not a criminal:

Charge dropped against daughter of Sen. Biden
Article from: Chicago Sun-Times Article date: October 30, 2002 | Copyright informationCopyright 2002 Chicago Sun-Times.

"A charge of obstructing a police officer against the daughter of U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) was dismissed Tuesday after she apologized. Ashley Blazer Biden, 21, of Wilmington, Del., was with a group outside a North Side bar about 1:15 a.m. Aug. 3 when someone threw a bottle at an officer, said Jerry Lawrence, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office. When officers tried to make an arrest, Biden blocked one of them and made intimidating statements, police said."

according to you he is guilty

nothing yet....but then neither has there been against Obama

the point is that you and your ilk were so quick to point fingers "guilty by association" but not to apply the same logic to Palin

Canuck

Are you REALLY expecting us to believe you are that naive. It is Chicago.

This is what happens. You’ve had way too much to Drink at Mothers Bar (north side bar). You get in your car and put your half full glass of beer on the dashboard. You get pulled over on the Eisenhower expressway. The two cops call you every name in the book. You try to retrieve your driver’s lic off the pavement where you dropped all your “stuff” from your wallet. All you can find is your Cook County Employee ID card. It says your boss is John S. Boyle and you work in Judicial Administration. The cops now call you Mister and drive your car to Austin Boulevard where they park it for you and have an unmarked squad drive you home.

Now, a spoiled brat kid of a Democratic Senator of the United States of America takes actions like her father would be proud of against the cops. And you think they won’t do everything in their power to make sure she is now Miss Biden when they find out??? And that cop that she threw that bottle at apologized for getting her upset and made her make those unfortunate statements, but he still has his job.

If a lowly county employee gets preferential treatment, what do you think happens to a daughter of a US Senator, a democratic Senator.

You probably think all those residents of Forest Park and Hillside ETC voted for Kennedy over Nixon. (Forest Park & Hillside are Towns with many cemeteries)

Joe bought those votes for Jack. (Which may have caused problems for Jack) You weren’t aware of that????

#14 Posted by ChiDem on September 2, 2008 at 10:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

now ChiDem....go back and read the article very slowly...you said:

"And that cop that she threw that bottle at apologized for getting her upset and made her make those unfortunate statements, but he still has his job."

she did not throw the bottle which would be more serious than a misdemeanor...she impeded the officer from making the arrest

so get the story straight before you post

anyway the object was again to point out that oldtimer lied again by calling her a criminal when she is not

but I guess posting lies doesn't mean anything
to you

What do you suppose Anwar can return to them in "rebates"? Man that kind of patriotism is the same kind the Bush Administration is using to buy off the religious elements in Iraq.

Elephant,

The Republicans want homosexuality in the closet. Less chance of being exposed that way.

J. Edgar Hoover, the hero of the right and staunch law and order man, prefered pink crotchless panties under the long dresses he would don for neocon get togethers. That is where the saying "turn over another page" originated.

Oh, wait. That was in the Republican chambers in congress.

Comparisons -comparisons. The Republicans keep saying that Senator Obama has no "executive leadership experience". They keep bragging about 2 years of being a mayor of "palookaville" and governor of a state that has a total population less than most big cities in the lower "48".

Question: What town was Senator McCain the major of, and what state did he govern besides the Keating empire? It is obvious that Palin should be at the top of the GOP ticket with her "credentials" based on that "profound" example of GOP "logic". There's still time to make the switch. Johnny will understand. He switched wives for "convenience". By the way. How come Johnny's first wife wasn't at the GOP convention? She stuck by the hero while he was at the Hanoi Hilton and after. Not good, especially after "giving" him 3 sons. Values?

Question : The theme of the Republican convention last night was 'Country before politics'. Is that what McBush did when he choose Palin to possibly be our President and world leader?
Palin's 1 1/2 year as a governor, Bush jr was Gov of Texas for eight years, look how that turned out.
Bush jr "The worst President in the history of the U.S".

# 38 MikeM - The difference between Obama being a b------ and the PALIN B------, is that he admits it and their isn't a pattern of contemptuous deceit manifested by a facade of hypocritical "principles". I never said Obama is "perfect". He hasn't my "total support" like Sarah so "proudly hails".

I did put all five of my kids through college and they are all successful professionals with financial means. I can't "kick" (unless its a Republican) either.

We liberals are "young at heart" and willing to listen before judging like righteous conservatives who pretend to be endowned with some kind of "divine relevation". I know. The devil makes you do it! That "guy" sure seems to have something on God. Or is he one too? He sure has a lot of disciples running around this week in "St. Paul".

Some historians now believe Bush jr will be the 'worst U.S President ever'. His biggest mistakes were who he selected to help him run our country, starting with VP Cheney. All of his appointments were strickly political with no reguard for our country and Americans.
Look who McBush picked as his first selection, a religious zealot beauty queen, under investigation for abuse of power, with an unmarried pregnant 17 year old daughter, and many more questions to come.
Give McBush some credit though, he does like them young and pretty.

#25 Rejoice: - Yes Mamm, The word is out. Fred Thompson will be "nominated" for an Emmy for best performance of a "Law and Order" "special" presentation. He is a "shoe in". Not since Ronald REagan's "Oscar" performance as "Mr. President" have we seen such theatrical deception.

As for "country first" as you so proudly and consistently proclaim - I thought Joe Lieberman demonstrated that "quality" to its essence. Too bad that country is Israel before the United States. Joe put his religion ahead of his patriotism to America when he decided the GOP Mideast "oil offensive" stood the best chance for providing Israeli security. What a pity. He'll have trouble adopting the Reagan 11th commandment when he slides totally into the GOP abyss.

Tonight will be a real "performance". It will be interesting to see if Sarah wears a "Scarlett Letter" proclaiming innocence in her pursuit to show her parenting "skills" and "devotion" to family, party and Alaska! The order of that "select trio" may vary.

Knital - Are you there?

Good morning from the greatest country in the world!! What's up?

As you know, I am an Independent and obviously want to vote for the right person. I saw the speeches last night and noticed right off the bat the difference between party themes. Country first and then experience makes sense. As far as contacting our elected officals, communicating with them is the only way to get things done.

I am glad that you agree that "change" cannot be affected by "one person" regardless of party.

The train wreck continues.
1.) Yesterday Fred Thompson gave a speech laying out mini me's strategy of staying his mentors course for four more years.

2.) It was announced the father of Brittany Palins love child will travel to St. Paul and the beauty queen continues to hide from the press, refusing to answer any questions about any topic. What other little surprises about her have yet to emerge?

Which topic do you think will be discussed at the water fountains this morning across America? The meltdown continues.

Thank you mini me. The quick rush and brash choice of an unvetted running mate has only increased legitimate concern about his impulsive and erratic judgement.

Americans rightfully distrust anyone that puts political expediency above the long term interests of the country.

Just watch which of the two will be all over the news this morning. The neocons goals layed out by Fred Thompson of the scandal that has embroiled the Republican Party.

LMAO.

Anyone remember when the far right used to claim the high ground on family values?

Let's see.

The current VP's only daughter is a butch lesbiam yet her father and the party relegates her to a second class citizenship status.

The neocons choice for the next VP is the new poster child for child pregnancy.

Their candidate for president has kicked his family to the curb to marry his secret lover and sugar momma.

If America agrees to let prayer in school, do ya think the Republicans might agree to keep their pants on?

LOL.

BTW. Did you notice how happy and content PRESIDENT OBAMA'S family was at the DNC. Those little girls were adorable. An American success story.

No divorcees and love children on that stage.

The big question.

Will America support a candidate for president that makes risky knee jerk decisions for short term political gain?
Will it support a woman that puts blind political ambition in front of the welfare of her children? The firestorm this woman chose to put her little girl through is despicable.

The answer is obvious.

BYE BYE mini me.

GoneFishin #79... one thing that must be understood is that as taxes are cut, one of the first things to suffer is Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of infrastructure. If landscaping dies, everyone notices, but if a pipe partially plugs or a beam goes unpainted and rusting for years, or a levee cracks, few people notice.

It's why other countries can safely run nuclear plants but we're worried that someone like Homer Simpson will be hired because you can pay him less. The bottom line runs everything... even government.

Republicans don't want anything (disqualified/indicted)to happen to Obama too soon then that would give enough time to get Hillary back in the saddle. Hey Pebbles, Where are those "New Ideas" that came out of Denver?

#60 Posted by DinNaples on September 3, 2008 at 2:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

John Lynch's letter about his preferring Obama's thoughtful answers to questions better than McCain's simplistic abrupt answers.

I do too. It shows Obama is not rash. It shows he thinks about an issue before he goes acting rashly and wrongly, making a big mess that takes us years to get out of.

Obama is intelligent. McCain is not. And that's what worries me about McCain in foreign policy. He's shoot from the hip and stubbornly stays that course even when wrong.

Add to that Sarah Palin who knows nothing, zip, about foreign policy. I mean she hasn't even given it thought. You can't get any worse than that. You see, I've heard that Alaskans see themselves as quite separate from the U.S. and therefore foreign policy is rarely discussed.

Obama on the other hand has thought deeply about it. He even commented on Iraq and the invasion as being totally wrong way back in 2002. He's studied it for years. In the Senate for nearly 4 years, he's served on The Committee on Foreign Relations. That's background in foreign affairs.

On the other hand Palin was a mayor of a town of about 6,000 people and governor of a state the size of a Florida District, 685,000 for less than 2 years. And of those two years she took time out to have a baby.

I imagine with that utter lack of experience pertinent to the U.S. that she can't be interviewed. I imagine she's cramming with talking points trying to cover her complete dirth of necessary knowledge for the position she's seeking. Perhaps it is, McCain says and me too.

MikeM, your blog saying I said this and that related to nothing I said. It was alien to me. You must have gotten me mixed up with someone else.

Elephanttamer and Bossman, you said it so well. Leiberman is all about Israel. That's the sole reason he's with McCain because he knows he can influence him, and McCain will do whatever Israel wants at our great expense.

In fact this whole war in Iraq was mostly choreographed by Israeli Neo Cons, Wolfawitz, Perle, Crystal etc. We did what Israel wanted us to do, and we're paying a big price for it.

And Leiberman is against Obama because he would be the least to obey Israel if it was not right. Obama would put America First.

We should put our country first. And if Israel abided by the UN Resolutions out against her, she might have some peace with the Arabs, but she doesn't want that, and we pay for her choices.

Leiberman is merely Israel's salesman, and he knows McCains a good buyer.

Old Timer, Obama's younger daughter is not three. She is seven. And they are beautiful, well behaved children with very concerned and loving parents.

Inquistive, how is it you had a blog without the word "Whine" in it? Wow, what a feat by you. You must have had the dictionary in your lap to help you out.

Also, I repeat, how can Sarah take care of her special needs baby when she galavanting all over the country campaigning. Obviously, she didn't know anything about her 17 year old daughter either. I know it can happen in the best of families, but goodness, now, that child also needs her. What a selfish person she is, and that's how pro life treats their kids after they're born?

But, I think McCain will pay the price for nominating her, because she is shrill, aggressive and witchy. I noticed when she was introduced and he was by her side, she went into a grating spiel and waved her finger at which McCain ducked and winced a couple of times. It was kind of humorous.

Republicans endured a category 3 storm today. No, not Hurricane Gustav. The vetting--or rather, lack thereof--of Sarah Palin.

Oh Sarah, we hardly knew ye. Greg Sargent at Talking Points Memo has a great roundup of what we've learned about Palin today alone.

* The news that Palin once backed the Bridge to Nowhere went national.

* It emerged that Palin has links to the bizarro Alaska Independence Party, which harbors the goal of seceding from the union that McCain and Palin seek to lead.

* The news broke that as governor, Palin relied on an earmark system she now opposes. Taken along with the Bridge to Nowhere stuff, this threatens to undercut her reformist image, something that was key to her selection as McCain's Veep candidate.

* The news broke that Palin's 17-year-old daughter became pregnant out of wedlock at a time when the conservative base had finally started rallying behind McCain's candidacy.

* Barely moments after McCain advisers put out word that McCain had known of Bristol Palin's pregnancy, the Anchorage Daily News revealed that Palin's own spokesperson hadn't known about it only two days ago.

* A senior McCain adviser at the Republican convention was forced into the rather embarrassing position of arguing that McCain had known about the pregnancy "last week" -- without saying what day last week he knew about it.

* It came out that Republican lawyers are up in Alaska vetting Palin -- now, more than 72 hours after it was announced that she'd been picked.

* Palin lawyered up in relation to the trooper-gate probe in Alaska -- a move that ensures far more serious attention to the story from the major news orgs.

Not a good start to Day One of the Republican Convention. If it wasn't for Gustav, Palin's problems would be an even bigger story. Can she survive as McCain's vice presidential hopeful? See Eagleton, Thomas. She may energize the Republican base (so much for McCain's supposed independence from the wingnuts in his party) but flop with everybody else.

Apparently the people in her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska, population 8,471, even thought of recalling her as mayor after she fired the city police chief and library director (!) for not endorsing her mayoral campaign.

Of, Course when the "carp" Gonefishin and the Rejoice talk REzko and his wife in the Obama dealings that's "marital collusion". The Palin relationship has to be much more "sophisticated". It's GOP "slime".

#73 MikeM GOP platform "smaller government". Does Sarah really need 25,000 "dealers" to dish out those oil rebates to Alaskans? No wonder she has an 80% plus rating in the state. Don't kick a golden "goose" in the mouth when it's feeding the "kitty".

Hey Mike. How come the federal government has to use some of my taxes to help pay for "a bridge to nowhere" in Alaska, and I don't get any cut of the pie from that oil up there? Is that GOP "economics"? Or is it some of that "class society" philosophy of you conservative Republicans?

DinNaples, I think its your ignorance that's showing. I know Obama's position toward Iran and other opponents is to engage in diplomacy. Never have I heard him say we're going to rush in and attack Iran, contrary to what McCain's itching to do and why Lieberman follows him around.

That's what you Right Wing Hawks don't like about Obama. He's not quick enough to go to war. He'd exhaust all other options first. He would gather a coalition if it were so necessary.

While he said he would protect Israel, I didn't hear him say he'd obey her every command. You know her commands are not always good, even for her.

At any rate, our chances that Israel wouldn't impel us into another war in the Middle East are much better with Obama. And Israel better know, for her own sake, that another war there, or a war with Iran means nobody wins. It's disaster all the way around.

It is a shame that AIPAC wields such power over our leaders here. We should be very angry about that. It would be different if what AIPAC wanted was good for the U.S., but often it's not.
