Letter of the Day: Priorities straight?

Editor, Daily News:

The green lobby is at it again — this time to the tune of $18-plus million.

The mayor is promoting and Naples City Council will soon decide on the purchase of Jack Antaramian’s unsuccessful purchase of 22 acres of land to be made into a possible park.

Get that — a park!

Besides the entire beach line on the western side of the city, there are already nine park areas in and adjacent to this small city: the greatly unused Fleischmann Park, Caribbean Gardens, Naples Botanical Garden, the Conservancy, Cambier Park, Sugden Park, Naples Pier and the soon to be added Freedom Park.

Meanwhile, economic development, which could use an $18 million infusion, is dead. Most of the parks pay no taxes and add significantly to the tax burden through costly services.

The Antaramian property should be developed into businesses that will pay taxes and add jobs. Whatever happened to the development plans for the corner of Fifth Avenue South and U.S. 41?

Real development is at a standstill, while political favoritism gets a green light.

While I’m at it, the Information Center should be brought back to life on Fifth Avenue. How about buying the old drug store property for its use? That property has been dead for over a year.

Warren White, Naples

Strange front page

Editor, Daily News:

I am very disappointed, but not surprised, by your front-page coverage of Sarah Palin accepting the Republican nomination for vice president and Joe Biden’s visit to Fort Myers.

These two political stories received space allocation and photo sizes inversely related to their vastly different levels of importance to this country. Don’t you have any sense of fairness and balance in your front-page coverage of headline stories?

Palin is the most exciting vice-president nomination in the past 50-plus years that I have been watching Democrat and Republican conventions. Biden’s visit and “chat” in Southwest Florida is just another stump stop with the same old recitation of campaign promises that are anything but news.

Let’s look at the four elements of these two front-page stories that your front-page editor should have configured differently.

Headline: “Palin casts herself as D.C. outsider” has a very negative sound to it, even though it is a positive in the context of her campaign. You couldn’t come up with a headline that summarized the moment a little better, such as “Palin received thunderous applause and welcome at Republican convention,” or something that has a positive enthusiasm to it? The unexciting headline for the Biden article is indicative of the stories’ lack of front-page worth and presence.

Space: In square inches, Palin received about 50 compared to Biden’s 90. The second-rate story receives almost double the space.

Photo size: In square inches, Palin received about eight compared to Biden’s 52. The second-rate story receives over six times the photo size.

Photo selection: Palin is arguably the most photogenic person to ever run for vice president, yet you choose the most awkward and unflattering shot you can find. Biden’s picture is a good picture of him with a good background selection. What happened to fairness?

Please don’t cause me to confuse the Daily News with The New York Times again.

Bruce Holecek, Naples

Typically out of line

Editor, Daily News:

It would appear from Robert Bartunek’s letter published Wednesday that he either doesn’t know many Christian/Democrats, or he’s trying to get his name in the paper.

As a long-standing member of the Democrat Party (years ago the Republicans did not have representation in the election process in Florida, and if they did it was minimal) and a follower of Jesus Christ since I was a teenager, I find Bartunek’s comments offensive and “way off the mark.”

To propose that the Democrats pray for death and destruction is so ridiculous as to be obscene.

As for Lady Bird Johnson being the largest stockholder in Halliburton, I challenge you to prove that claim.

Mr. Bartunek, smile; God loves you and I’m trying. After all, God is not a Republican.

J. David Curry Sr., Chokoloskee

’Beyond belief’

Editor, Daily News:

Here we go again. Robert Bartunek has displayed the idiotic Republican conceptions of what Democrats stand for.

His letter reciting his bizarre beliefs as to what Democrats stand for is beyond belief.

He mentions the American casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan and blames the Democrats. Well, who started the invasion and war in Iraq — and why? Your Republican President Bush — for no reason.

Poisoning people to get people sick? Guess who is sick!?

Pray for more school shootings? Words fail me on this one. Waste a prayer on Dick Cheney? Never!

Oh, yes — the Democrats are starting the hurricanes?

What we need to pray for is to defeat the Republicans soundly, and bring our country back to peace and sanity.

Genevieve DeLisle, Naples

’God bless America’ again

Editor, Daily News:

Last Friday my wife, Emily, received a note that Barron Collier High School invited all veterans as guests to the football game with Lely High School.

I immediately went home, polished my uniform and drove off to the game. As I walked up to the gate, the ladies — very polite — weren’t aware of the invite, but let me in.

I saw all of the young students and others, but no veterans. We were to sit at the 50-yard-line area.

The attendants were polite and told me that the invitation was for next week. Ouch!

They invited me to stay, and I did. A young lady came up to me and thanked me for my service; I believe she is director of the band and drill team.

She spoke over the PA system and thanked Col. Herb Savage for his (my) attendance and service. I received a lot of applause and wanted to sing “God Bless America.” I didn’t.

But it was great, and during the game and the halftime show, I was very impressed with all of the young people and their great performances.

I hope that many veterans, young and old, will go to the scheduled event tonight at Barron Collier. They will be admitted free and honored.

I thank the principal, faculty and the entire school for that occasion, and I know all of us feel the same.

God bless America.

Herbert Rosser Savage, Marco Island

It’s true

Editor, Daily News:

In a world of “spin doctors,” as is the case with the Democratic Party and liberal media (they are supposed to report the news, not offer editorials and opinions in the guise of news), it is so refreshing to see a true leader stand up and do the right thing.

I support the true party of reform — John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Charles Krespach, Fort Myers

’Weather’ or not

Editor, Daily News:

Sarah Palin epitomizes Florida’s lightning and thunder storms.

Floridians know too well what emerges in the massive skies when the dazzling sunshine is suddenly overcome by the uncertainty of clouds clutching and waiting to explode electrifying energy.

The spectacular sights and sounds nature exhibits once the clouds burst open far exceeds any fireworks display. One minute you’re on the beach enjoying the sunshine, and the next minute you’re running for cover hoping you make it to your car before the bolts of lightning (that are known to strike from miles away) strike you. If you’re timely, you might make it to your car before you get drenched by the sudden downpour of our most valuable resource — rain. The pounding, vibrating feeling and sounds of thunder for most people is harrowing.

Palin brings to our country and the entire world a new meaning of the word electrifying. Likewise, she brings new significance to the words woman, morality, motherhood, wife, civility, common sense, intellect and success, to name some of her accolades.

In essence, Palin will fearlessly strike against corruption in Washington; Palin’s voice will be heard when it needs to be, and Palin will rain on anyone’s parade when she needs to.

Sarah Palin is the ray of sunshine we all needed to be energized.

Mariette Bertelli, Naples

Beyond the words

Editor, Daily News:

History is replete with the effects of grand oratory on individuals and countries — most of the time to their detriment!

We are currently undergoing that treatment from Barack Obama. He believes this is the greatest country in the world — “all 57 states” of it — but wants to change it. He believes in the free-enterprise system, but as president will work to redistribute the wealth of the country.

His solution to the energy crisis: inflate your tires and drive slower. As he proposes higher taxes, he also proposes more spending through entitlement gifts to the people.

This man’s background ... reeks with ties to associations and organizations with radical causes throughout the country.

Remember, the hand that gives also is capable of taking away! Please listen to what Obama is saying instead of how he is saying it!

Dale R. Fisher, Naples

Serious about that change?

Editor, Daily News:

If Barack Hussein Obama’s message is “change,” then why would he select a vice president who depicts non-change?

Joe Biden is Washington; he isn’t offering the voters change, except for the transformation of coverage to his scalp. If anything should happen to Obama, we’re stuck with an individual who depicts exactly what Obama doesn’t want: a dinosaur who can’t represent change, because Biden is part of the ongoing problem in Washington.

On the other hand, John McCain selects a vice president who isn’t a “good old boy.” Doesn’t McCain’s selection truly epitomize change?

It seems Obama contradicts his own message.

Adele Amico, Estero

Tough stuff

Editor, Daily News:

The world of politics is truly a strange world.

Hillary Clinton based her bid for the Democratic nomination on her “experience.” The reality was, she had no more real meaningful experience versus anyone who was a junior U.S. senator.

Barack Obama also has very limited experience. Both John McCain and Joe Biden have lots of experience as U.S. senators, but based on the quality of the work of the Senate, I am not sure they have much to brag about based on that area of “experience.”

Currently there is a lot of focus on Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska and McCain’s choice for vice president. The “talking heads” are moaning about her lack of experience, but the reality seems to be that she has more meaningful experience than either Clinton or Obama. What is lacking in the focus on Palin is an in-depth discussion of her character. From what little data we have at this point, she appears rock-solid and clearly not your typical politician. Her personal story speaks volumes about intelligence, ethics and inner strength.

It would be a serious mistake for a foreign leader to underestimate what may be America’s first “iron lady.”

E.R. Russell, Naples

I am sure ...

Editor, Daily News:

The “lack of experience” on foreign policy charge by Hillary Clinton, John McCain and the Republicans was always hypocritical and silly.

Barack Obama has dealt with foreign policy issues for 31⁄2 years. Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George Bush were governors and didn’t have 60 seconds of foreign-policy experience.

Showing his contempt for experience and his flawless “judgment,” McCain chose a vice president who is a 20-month governor of Alaska, which has the population of greater Miami.

Sarah Palin is a militant anti-abortionist, a “creationist” who denies that global warming is man-made, opposed clean water initiatives and loves oil and Exxon Mobil.

Palin, I am sure, believes in the biblical science fiction that the Earth is 6,000 years old, which is the length of time McCain wants us to be in Iraq. Sarah is anti-science, anti-intellectual and wants to destroy the Earth — or what Republicans call a “moral values” Republican.

Palin was asked a few months ago about being vice president and she said that she “wasn’t that familiar with the duties of the vice president.” On the day that McCain chose Palin over Paris Hilton to be his VP, experienced Palin was asked her views on Iraq: “I really haven’t focused that much on Iraq.”

After eight years of authoritarianism and theocracy, McCain has given us George Bush in drag.

Bill Linehan, Naples

The campaign experience

Editor, Daily News:

Now that we know who the main players in this presidential drama are, it seems to me that certain criteria that formerly seemed to be considered de rigueur in candidate selection is no longer relevant.

I refer specifically to experience. Neither Barack Obama nor Sarah Palin have any experience to bring to the jobs they are seeking; and, no matter what spin the press puts on it, nothing can be dredged up to suggest that either of them is in any way prepared for these awesomely complex offices.

So, having said that, the question that I have wanted answered from the beginning of this circus is, who are the candidates’ real friends and advisers? These people are the key players in what happens to the United States in the years to come and who will ultimately be leading the nation in the matters most important to all of us: health care, jobs, housing, financial security, etc.

No president makes a move without them. We need to know now who they are and how their influence will direct the course of our lives. Then, and only then, will we be able to make an informed decision at the polls.

Obama, John McCain, Joe Biden, Palin — they are just the faces that will meet and host famous leaders and celebrities and represent the country at public events. The advisers — they run the country and, in some instances, the world.

Who are they?

Bette Dion, Naples

It reflects on him

Editor, Daily News:

I had never ever heard of Sarah Palin. No one else I know seems to have either, but I’m sure she’s a lovely, athletic woman.

My concern is not with her. It is with John McCain.

I thought that at his age (some say old), with health problems, he would have consulted an actuarial chart before choosing a running mate. I thought he would have chosen a person with at least some national experience to take over, just in case.

I thought he would have considered the good of the future of the country as his first priority, but he didn’t. He chose based on gender.

How sad is that? And how it diminishes McCain as a leader.

Nan Bardsley Evans,Naples

Boo hoo

Editor, Daily News:

Barack Obama made a big, big mistake by not choosing Hillary Clinton for his vice president.

John McCain’s adviser is a genius! McCain just moved way ahead of Obama by choosing Sarah Palin.

Poor Clinton; she’s crying real tears, probably for the first time in her entire life! Why, she was supposed to be the first woman in the White House!

Just think if McCain does win the election, and God forbid something happens to him before his term is up, Sarah Palin will be the first woman president!

Clinton has got to be throwing a fit right now. She and Bill finally got what they deserve. For years they have walked around as if they were above the law, as if they were untouchable. Now to save any shred of dignity they might have left within them, the only thing left for them to do is pick up their tails and exit the stage!

Did they get a big dose of humility or what!?

Peggy Brown, Naples

Big deal

Editor, Daily News:

Re: Republican vice-presidential candidate.

About time we get someone who is not Ivy League, lawyer or Washington “insider” — just someone who is bright enough to get the best advice and courageous enough to make the tough decisions.

We should do the same with Congress!

After all, what real good has experience done so far?

John Richardson, Naples

So now, what’s left?

Editor, Daily News:

With the Democratic National Convention under our belt, we can now ask ourselves what it is that we don’t know about Barack Obama.

The answer to that is simple. We don’t know what he has accomplished in his adult life beyond self-promotion and the accumulation of a long list of promises he would act upon if elected president.

In the absence of any meaningful accomplishments, we must judge him by what we know about him personally, all of which is very much left. He attended left-liberal colleges; his post-college “work” was left-liberal; his known associates are leftist or liberal; his wife is left-liberal.

The liberal doctrine of victimhood is the philosophy of the church he attended for 20 years; his political record in Illinois and in the U.S. Senate has been left-liberal; and, most importantly, those who put him on the national stage as a presidential candidate are all very much left-liberal.

Obama is a good man who is intellectually suitable as a candidate for president, but he has driven in the left lane his entire life. I suspect that he has never had a serious thought about private-sector job creation or legislation in support of business. Thus, there is no doubt that he would attempt to drive our nation hard left.

This is clearly not the “change” that would cause me to vote for him for president.

Frank M. Tuttle, Bonita Springs

Connect the dots

Editor, Daily News:

Democrats, your hypocrisy has no limits!

Letter-writer Phyllis Andrews tells us to examine Barack Obama’s economic plan.

I have. Two guys named Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels could have written the same plan.

Oops, silly me. They did. It’s called “The Communist Manifesto.” Yup, nothing quite like a group of “academics” to correct our economy. Wonderful.

Yes, it is crucial to examine both plans to determine if the United States stays a capitalistic power or becomes a Marxist loser. The choice is ours. Oh, how about those homes, Holmes? Never heard a peep out of these wonderful, caring Democrats when it came to homes owned by John Kerry, the Kennedys, Herbert Kohl, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, the Rockefellers, Robert Wexler — do you want me to continue? Didn’t think so!

Now comes “Ms. Wonderful,” letter-writer Jane Varner. Jane states we are only getting part of the Georgia/Russia story. Sorry; her knowledge of world history is seriously lacking. She must think just like all of those same Democrats who stated Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania legally belonged in the Soviet sphere of influence,

Nice! The Soviet Union gave Varner exactly the same talking points then as now with respect to Georgia.

How do I know? I am of Estonian heritage. Last time I checked, South Ossetia and Abkhazia were legitimate regions of Georgia, Jane.

Jane and Phyllis, your Bolshevik views are not fooling many of us. One last word of advice to you and your ilk: denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.

So it’s time for all Democrat thinkers like you to come out of the closet and admit you are Marxists.

Igor K. Maas, Naples

Where is Ralph? We need him

Editor, Daily News:

If this presidential election is about good judgment, we can all sit this one out with a clear conscience.

Barack Obama could have been a shoo-in for the presidency by picking Hillary Clinton as his running mate. Instead, he decided to disenfranchise, disrespect and thumb his nose at

18 million Hillary supporters, like myself, by picking Joe Biden as his running mate.

Rumor has it Michelle Obama doesn’t like Clinton and Barack doesn’t want Bill Clinton around the White House. Whatever you believe, it was a major mistake.

Then John McCain, until now, fiercely criticized Obama for his lack of experience. So for his running mate, he picks a relatively unknown, inexperienced governor of Alaska who would be a heartbeat away from the presidency if he should die in the White House, all in an effort to get the women who supported Hillary.

With Sarah Palin being anti-abortion, that won’t happen, and she’s no Hillary Clinton — not even close.

For all of us who wanted the next four years to be better than the last eight, our hopes are rapidly deteriorating. Unreal.

Suddenly the name Ralph Nader on the ballot doesn’t seem as ridiculous as it did in the past.

Joe Sineno, Naples

What does, doesn’t work

Editor, Daily News:

How ironic! That Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s own unmarried daughter is pregnant at age 17 speaks volumes about the effectiveness of the abstinence-only approach to sex education, which the vice-presidential nominee publicly espouses (no pun intended).

Fortunately, for her daughter’s presumptive child, she is from a family of means and can provide a life that most children born to teen mothers likely will never know.

Don’t condemn condoms. Statistically, they work better than abstinence-only as a part of a comprehensive education program in which abstinence is promoted as the only certain method for preventing unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, but where all the facts are presented so that young people are fully informed.

Abstinence-only is an unrealistic and irresponsible approach to educating young people about sex in a culture where sex is pervasively present in all media. And sex addiction is among the fastest growing problems today, respecting neither political ideology, religious affiliation or financial status. Hiding the subject of sex behind naive beliefs does not work and has not worked.

Open, honest, intelligent discussion is a good place to start.

David Llewellyn, Naples

Newer, slicker GOP

Editor, Daily News:

With the selection of Sarah Palin to be their vice-presidential candidate, it seems that the Republicans are proving once again that GOP stands for Grand Oil Party.

Repeat by "popular" request, see below!

What a country!!!

Millions of people will get a chance to vote for a "COMMUNITY ORGANIZER" with dubious ASSOCIATES/FRIENDS for the past twenty years Ayers...Rev Wrong...Farakon...Rezko...and on and on. Oh I forgot, less than three years in the US Senate and most of that time he has been running for president.

If that describes a person who can "CHANGE" and shake up Washington, pass the kool aide for everyone to drink!

The only way to affect change is to change our procedures. Term limits...line item veto...bills that stand alone with no attachments...immediate accountabilty (there's got to be technology to accomplish this)...abolish both houses when public opinion has no faith in their abilities to continue running the country's business and call for immediate elections...no more "pork" to name a few.

Instead of attacking/expressing all your thoughts to each other and accomplish nothing on a daily basis, write, call, fax, write and e-mail your elected officals.

GROW UP YA'LL!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH REGARDLESS OF YOUR PARTY AFFILIATION!

WE THE PEOPLE" AFFECT CHANGE AS A "MAJORITY". HELLO...IS ANYONE listening???

HOW ABOUT THAT SARAH PALIN!!! YOU GO GIRL! TALK ABOUT A REFRESHING CHANGE.

USA...USA...USA - We are going back to our roots!

What a refreshing atmosphere to see the "GREATEST COUNTRY" in the world being acknowledge in public by PATRIOTIC AMERICANS!!!

Before long...we will have/say MERRY CHRISTMAS again...a christmas tree...say the LORD'S prayer...say the pledge aligence to the flag in public...say the word "GOD" in public again...display the nativity scene again in public...serve your country in time of danger and be proud to do so!!

That's the USA I remember as I was growing up!!

Have a great day and a better tommorow!

Palin’s speech was nothing more than disgusting. I cringe at the thought that she might be the next V.P. At least the Dems were able to be respectful in their criticisms, but she was a bully on a playground. Shameful.

Bring back Mitt Romney.

Swiftboating Kerry was a very successful dirty tactic by the neocons that was unprecedented until now.

Fellow inmates of the Hanoi Hilton were left with a less than favorable view of his actions while imprisoned.

Let the games begin. Thanks for setting the precedent fella's. Let us know how it tastes.

"A 70-year-old man who was imprisoned with John McCain during the Vietnam War says the Arizona senator lacks the temperament to be president.

Phillip Butler says in a new attack ad that McCain’s prisoner-of-war status is not a qualification for the presidency and McCain is not somebody he wants to see “with his finger near the red button.”

“He was well known as a very volatile guy and he would blow up and go off like a roman candle,” Butler says in the ad."

Hey! Another "great night" for the Republicans in "St. Paul!

I hope everyone saw the "McCain family" on stage with Cindy. If only Johnny's first wife would have been with the "contingent", it would have been perfect.

I was almost in tears listening to Cindy mumble through her speech exulting Johnny while invoking all the stereotype platitudes accorded in such situations. But through it all, it came out in the end this way;

"THIS BUDS FOR YOU"!

She couldn't say it that way, but her demeanor said it all. She's the next Jackie Kennedy! Maybe there will be an Onassis in her future too?

Wow, Rejoice, you are a "busy dizzy" so far, aren't you? You must be burning up your U_TUBE GOP talking points. That "smokescreen" you are trying to send across is polluting the "environment". (that means this blog - I know that is way over your intellectual comprehension)

Hey, I didn't know you are such an expert on Chicago. All that violence makes Iraq look like "Club Med". What's going to happen when Petraeus stops handing out money in Baghdad? I sure hope those Sunnis and "whatever" don't start feeling "cheated" and start shooting again.
Ah, Johnny has that all "surged" out.

One more thing. You better get with Oldtimer and figure out what's to be said about the Kurds planning to "absorb" Kirkuk into their domain. That's where a lot of oil is, and Baghdad might be upset that their $70 billion surplus might slow down or, even worse, dwindle. Go get on U-Tube right now. The war may not be over like Oldtimer seems to think.

Re #13 Alma - Gee alma, I thought Sarah already had a pair. Haven't you been watching TV? Re #29 Inquisitive - Inquisitive, remember sentences begin with a capital letter, even "incomplete" ones.

Whining? Did you ever see a political party "run away" from their "leaders" (Bush/Cheney) like the conservative Republicans did at their convention, especially last night?

The "confession" by McCain regarding the last 8 years of FAILURE was so "compassionately" expressed that I'm sure the victims of their malfeasance will be anesthetized come November. At least, that seems to be the GOP plan.

Re #32 Inquisitive: - You say "no substance,", "no clue". It's kind of like the joke Jay Leno said last night on the Tonight Show. "Sen. The use of the word "whine" by the GOP choir indicates that some "sore" spots are being "hit".
It's too bad that it's "creator", Phil Gramm, can't placate the thousands of Enron stockholders and pensioners that have plenty to "whine" about as a result of his manipulations on the behalf of Conservative Republican interests.

To those of you who keep saying Obama has "no experience" and he is only a "community organizer" you are NOT paying attention. Let's go over this again:

1. First African American to be editor of the Harvard Law Review for 3 years.

2. Taught THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CONSTITUTIONAL LAW course at Harvard Law school for 12 years

3. Served on the ARMED FORCES COMMITTEE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA SENATE for 3 1/2 years.

4. Elected by the DEMOCRATIC VOTERS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA to be the 2008 nominee for PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

5. Defeated the 2 term first lady of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in the Democratic primary to become the NOMINEE OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

6. Has surrounded himself and chosen the top minds and experts in their fields to fix the mess Bush/Cheney has created in this economy and the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'S image and security around the world. That is what real leaders do. I guess since it has been 8 years since we have had a real leader, it is easy to forget!

Gov. Palin won a beauty contest and was mayor of a town of 7,000. Believes as Govenor of a state of 660,000 that abstinence is the only way to prevent teen pregnancy as she parades her 17 year old pregnant daughter and the boyfriend in front of the nation and the media sharks.

In his first major decision as the Republican nominee, McCain chooses a woman to get the Hillary voters and to pander to the those who want to "Drill baby drill" for oil in Alaska. PATHETIC!

These are the facts, folks. PAY ATTENTION!!!

You can do! Look in the mirror and say "Hey, wake up, write, fax, call, email or morse code your thoughts to my elected officals!"

Just think how grown up you will feel!!!

Barack is a nice guy and intelligent according to many people as was Freddie Hampton. The difference was that Freddie wanted to make a difference. Barack wanted to make a name and money at Michelle's urging.

Freddie would talk to store owners after their windows were broken and "request" a donation to a youth center. Barry would spread government money around wastefully so some would come back to him and build his power.

Community Organizer or Community Activist if you prefer.. Other stellar stars in the Community Organizing field...Jesse Jackson (millionaire) and Al "Tawana" Sharpton (millionaire). Let’s not forget Frank Nitti (millionaire) was a Community activist in Chicago. Black Muslims are Community activists. Calypso Louie (millionaire) Black Panther Party was involved in community activism .

Obama was mentored by the self-exiled, communist from Chicago, Frank Davis, while living in Hawaii and often mentioned in his books. Followed the instructions for socialist street indoctrination of Saul Alinsky. Listened to the rantings and racism of his friend and confidante, Rev Jeremiah Wright. He was promoted by Black Panther Khalid al-Mansour and others who felt he was one of them. Another that thought Barry was "one of them" is Billy Ayres who helped launched his political and personal ego trip with his advice and support. Terrorist Billy Ayers merged members of the Black Panther Party with the SDS into a killer/bomber group. Barry has associations with members of both these groups.

Barry never abandoned his community activist role just because he became a state Senator. He continued to make money from community activiism. More money now that he could control or move state funds.

As both Barry and Billy say, America, what a great country.

All the Democrat and Republican bashing is getting old. Clinton may have done some less than moral things while in office but he still had our economy in better shape than Bush does or Mccain ever will considering he is another Bush in his ideas for our country. In truth we (the public) have no idea what is really going to happen when the winner gets in office. I don't personally care for either choice but I do know I am not willing to chance another 4 years of Bush policies and McCain is pretty old so if he kicks it do you really think Palin is ready to be President? I don't. Do I really want Obama, I don't know but I do know what I don't want and that is more of the same.
This is a hard year for most everyone but I think the ones that are all fired up about McCain must have more financial security than the average person because I can't afford to keep going like it is.
Also McCain being a POW for 5 years, does this not worry anyone? With torture he went through for all that time he has to have post traumatic stress disorder. Do we want someone in office that could lose it someday during a flashback. It could happen, it's not like you get a warning before you have one. This is just food for thought, I don't want to upset anyone this is just stuff I think about and was wondering if anyone else thinks about these things

Old, I didn't say I liked Palin's speech, just said she and the writer did a good job.
McCain had decades to make a change in Washington, what did he do? Agreed and supported the Bush's over 90% of the time. The Republican congress supported Bush jr almost 100% of the time even though it was hurting our country and most Americans, McCain lead the way. McCain says he puts our country and Americans first, I don't believe he's ever put anybody first, not in NAM, certainly not in his personal life.

McCain told the same old stories again about his stay as a POW, plenty of pic's to. They say he had the few people that stayed to hear him crying, what a man!
Where are the statements he signed calling himself a 'black american', the statements he signed giving military info to the enemy, the tape recordings he provided which the Cong used to demoralize our soldiers. The camp didn't call McCain 'songbird' because he had a great voice.

Mariette Bertelli,

I understand the point you are trying to make in your letter, but you started it with "Sarah Palin epitomizes Florida's lightning and thunderstorms" and ended with "Sarah Palin is the ray of sunshine we all need to be energized.

Then you added "Palin brings to our country and the entire world a new meaning of the word electrifying. Likewise, she brings new significance to the words woman, morality, motherhood, wife, civility, common sense, intellect and success, to name some of her accolades."

Accolades are awards or decorations, not character traits or descriptions of achievements.

The NDN editorial staff should have edited your letter so that it made sense and had the desired impact. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be any more aware of bad grammer than someone like you, for whom English is obviously a second language.

"And sex addiction is among the fastest growing problems today, respecting neither political ideology, religious affiliation or financial status"

David Llewellyn

Good letter, David, but with a great Welsh name like yours, you should know that 'neither' refers to a choice of two things.

"God is not a Republican."

J. David Curry Snr.

Of course, it's not like you're biased or anything, right?

#37 Posted by BigG on September 5, 2008 at 12:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Laughable is the McCain camp’s attempt to paint Palin as a “reformer.” Her record shows just the opposite. As mayor of Wasilla, she raised sales taxes to build a sports complex. She hired a lobbyist to snare $27 million in earmarks from Washington. (Isn’t McCain campaigning against pork?) She chaired a fund-raising committee for indicted Sen. Ted Stevens. Her husband belonged to, and she was active in, a campaign for Alaska to secede from the United States. And she was for “The Bridge to Nowhere” until last week, when she suddenly came out against it.

Surly you are kidding. We all know how our country has turned out in the last 8 years, it's good that you are honest enough to admit it. But if Bush jr had selected good people around him, starting with Cheney and Rove, our country, Americans would not be in such bad shape today.

Well, maybe Bush will pardon him in January and the "Big A" can go into business with "Scooter". They sure make that guy Rezko look like a "piker". Watching Sarah Palin smiling last night at the GOP convention, I couldn't help but sympathize with her in dealing with her "challenge" of dealing with parenting "responsibilities". It must have been difficult trying to "decide" whether to throw some "good old Alaskan ice" on the passionate Levi and Bristol to "cool" them off. On the other hand, she might have given them blankets so they didn't need to keep "warm" by coddling each other. Talking to them would have been no good since today's teens go on what they see on TV, not on what happens in the home, when parents are at home. Maybe letting religious faith intervene was the best course and it is faith that has dictated the situation as it exists. Oh, be it ice, blankets, words or faith, the Lord knows best and he "obviously" has "blessed" the Palin's with mommy's "little dividend"!

Question: If Levi and Bristol don't get married before the 1st of the year, who gets the tax deduction for the baby? Does Bristol have enough income to qualify? Is there someway that Todd & Sarah can "capitalize" on this deduction?
It would be a shame if the baby didn't make "its mark". Well, maybe the delivery date is in 2009. By then the wedding should have been "consummated".

We have many posts, both liberal, independent and conservative that suggests that the country will be run by Presidential advisors. The president will be the glad hander that does all the PR work. This is how it has worked for decades with the President making the final important decisions based on his or her advisors recommendations.

One post is:

(Barack) Has surrounded himself and chosen the top minds and experts in their fields
These are the facts, folks. PAY ATTENTION!!!
#69 Posted by lb5361 on September 5, 2008 at 10:30 a.

One of the most important issues will be concerning Iran and it’s nuclear ambitions. This “problem” started when Iran “tested” the USA by taking hostage our embassy officials. We all know what a fiasco this was. In effect Iran won and emboldened our enemies around the world. It cast Jimmy and the USA as a paper tiger. No longer worthy of respect. This lead to our first oil crisis and decimated our economy. Fortunately it lead to the defeat of Jimmy.

In dealing with Iran, we must not go into paper tiger mode like during the Carter administration.

The advisors that will be advising the president will help form the direction we go in dealing with these serious problems.

Barack has chosen Zbigniew Brzezinski as his CHIEF Foreign Policy Advisor. Brzezinski views history through the lens of Marxism, which, despite its atheism, has much in common with Islam. Both Communism and Islam are universalistic ideologies that reject the idea of the nation-state.

After Obama named Brzezinski as his Chief Foreign Policy Advisor, Brzezinski arrived in Damascus, Syria, to begin talks with the terrorists and political assassins of the Assad regime.

The visit was not coordinated with America's embassy and will not be covered by the press.

Brzezinski was a promoter of Islamic fundamentalism, which he celebrated as a bulwark against Soviet Russian communism. Using the Islamic fundamentalists, Brzezinski hoped to make the region between the southern border of the USSR and the Indian Ocean from which fundamentalist subversion would radiate into Soviet territory, first and foremost into the five Soviet republics of central Asia, Azerbaijan, etc. It was in the service of this Islamic fundamentalist card that Brzezinski first helped overthrow the Shah of Iran, and then insisted that the replacement could be no one else than Ayatollah Khomeini.

ZBIGNIEW BRZEZINSKI WAS THE CHIEF FOREIGN POLICY ADVISOR of JIMMY CARTER, the person that got the middle east into it’s oil blackmailing state and ruined our economy for years and had unemployment sky high.

Four more years of Jimmy Carter advisors???? Marxists like to stick together. That’s why Brzezinski was Barack’s choice.

As that previous poster said:
These are the facts, folks. PAY ATTENTION!!!

Rejoice, I thought Obama did quite well on The O'Reilly Factor, that is when Bill gave him some time to answer the question.

The Surge obviously should have reduced killings, but what did it solve? The point Obama was trying to make is we want out of there, and the Surge alone won't get us out.

It's the political problems they have in Iraq, and we can't solve them. So, since the Surge wasn't going to solve the problem, then why prolong our stay there.

Also, Is Bush responsible for all those no bid contracts and the terrible waste and graft of billions and billions of our tax dollars in Iraq? He'll say, we did our part, they were supposed to do theirs. If you don't hold Bush accountable, then stop holding Barack accountable for how the buildings were built and whether they were kept up by the occupants or the builder.

The Democrats have tried to get us out of Iraq, but Bush vetos it. So, we can't thank Bush that we still remain chained to his utterly ridiculous war that had nothing to do with terrorism. I know, and you should too. If not, then you remain a fool of Bush's.

McCain's speech last night, given in a soft and humble manner was, I believe done to disarm us. To see him as a gentle person who wants to work across the aisle to do good things. Also he made sure you knew he will fight terrorism.

My question is, when are the Republicans going to start going after al Qaeda with the dedication that they have spent on foolish detours?
Iran is no, I repeat no threat to us. They're trying their darndest to make her seem a threat, but she's not. She doesn't have the people that invaded us nor is she friendly with them.

The truth of it is, Iran is friendly with Hezzbolah and the Palestinians, and Israel doesn't like them, so here were are, Israel's little errand boys doing what she wants, and that is invade Iran. Before it was invade Iraq. It doesn't seem Israel cares that her little whipping boy is going down, down, down, down.

McCain will listen and do for them because we don't come first. America doesn't come first, and don't kid yourself that we do. Why do you think they make such a big to do about Lieberman?

#52 Posted by truthmatters on September 5, 2008 at 4:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Obama is our only hope because he's not one of the Imperialist Neo Cons, and he is smart. His instincts and judgment are excellent. I watch as he grasps the big picture and weighs all the ramifications. He does this in a Blink. It's a gift. McCain doesn't have it and neither does his pit bull with lipstick.

Our narrow minded backing of Georgia, even giving her the go ahead to invade that breakaway province of South Ossetia has made this awful situation. It didn't have to happen.

Russia is no fool. They know exactly what we're doing over there, and that is expanding our hegemony surrounding her. Face it. The Neo Cons want control of the world, but they're too dumb to know or even seem to care that they are killing this country in the process.

Our debt is for one reason only. The Bush Administration expanded the military, established Home Land Security (spying on us) nearly doubling it. The they invaded countries, costing us more mega billions. And what did we gain? Nothing. Al Qaeda is stronger, Afghanistan is falling to the control of the Taliban, and now Pakistan is angry with us because we kill too many civilians over there.

We really have alienated nearly every country and there comes the point, the Tipping Point, when it all comes crashing down on us. We aren't there yet, but its growing, and we'd better not elect another Bush Clone, another neo con to lead us, or we're finished. And every one of you right wing know it alls will bear great responsibility for the fall of America.

"Silent Sarah" (No media for her is allowed by the GOP until she "graduates the RNC Academy of Rhetorical Deception.")epitomizes the stupidity of the abstinence argument versus ANY consideration of contraception alternatives.

Palin's "parenting" choices seem to be secondary to her personal goals! The faith and "inevitability" excuse she and your conservative GOP element accords to the adultery exemplified by Bristol's pregnancy is an insult to anyone's intelligence being presented with the option of accepting the Pro Life argument that they have the "solution".

The paranoid tax infatuation that is the very fibre of the conservative GOP was my target to illustrate the real primary "value" that is a total contradiction of Christian principles and a characteristic flaw in the GOP platform. It's the height of their bible thumping hypocrisy that deservedly entitles them to the title and castigation as "Enemies of Society!

You're asking what legislation Obama has done. What about McCain? Seems he was legislating some things you right wingers didn't like, like his immigration bill. How about campaign finance reform?

Then he "changed" his stripes and ran from his own bills he backed. So, flip flopper McCain who also has "changed" to be the darling of the religious, evangelicals is your guy. He cozied up to John Hagee, an End Timer nut, who also said scathing things about Catholics and Katrina God's punishment. Seems one of his religious backers said 9/11 was God's punishment for our wicked ways.

Don't you Right Wingers think it's a little strange that Sarah avoids the press. McCain's campaign doesn't seem to want them near her. I wonder why. Is she cramming, trying to learn something, anything about the rest of the United States and the rest of the World? We aren't allowed to see how little she knows now. I wish she and Biden would debate pronto. I wonder how many times she can refer to Barack's being a community organizer and her being Mayor and Governor.

Also, are you so dumb that you think that a president has no people around him to help with running the government? What executive experience did JFK have?

In fact, how many Presidents didn't have Executive Experience before they took office?

I too saw that the Gallup tracking poll has Obama 49 and McCain 42.

Also, where's my answer from you Right Wingers about Bush taking those no big contracts for rebuilding Iraq and Billions and Billions of dollars disappearing. The oversight is so bad, that one major overseer said it was about zero.

Now, the question is easy. Do you blame Bush for the mess in Iraq's rebuilding and the lost funds?

#144...Alymasonlybar....my interest in US politics is manyfold

firstly what happens in your Presidency affects our economy as together we are each others largest trading partner and as we are so close when the US sneezes we catch cold

secondly I have travelled to the US for 50 years and have many American friends...I also have family in Arizona..California..Nevada.. and Oregon

I have also owned property in Naples for 20 years

I am interested in international politics and like to learn how each system works
lastly.. posters like Rejoice ,,InquisitiveJS..oldtimer keep posting items that are just not true..like Rejoice's post on Obama's voting record and oldtimer's inane response..outing them furthers my knowledge

Americans who are close to our border are interested in our elections but I do find in general most Americans are ..as you say naive ...about anything but American politics

I don't say that disparingly but as fact

finally thank you for asking about my wife...she is coming along fine...finished her chemo and all her markers are good...she is on 3-month monitoring with her oncologist which entails a CA125 ovarian cancer blood test each visit

BTW....any woman reaching her 40's should have that test as a matter of course...GP's normally do not think of it but it is early detection of one of the top cancer deaths among women

hope I answered your post to your satisfaction

I have to say, any woman backing McCain and Palin is crazy. They are about as close to the Taliban as you can get. Only our laws protect us from having our rights taken away and having us thrown back about 80 years.

Reproductive Freedom is an absolute vital issue for women. Without it, they become beggars. They are bound to pregnancy and child rearing. Their leverage gone.

Many women and men fought so women could have this vital freedom for themselves. McCain and Palin will put all Right Wingers on the Supreme Court and they will not just adjudicate, but they will actively legislate that our reproductive right are void.

Sarah Palin would never be where she is had it not been for women, those "not" like her, that went before her and gave her this gift. She doesn't deserve it.

Adele Amico, Estero
I notice that John Sydney McCain is trying to adopt the "Change" slogan, and many other things that Obama has brought to light...
Maybe you are listening to the wrong people.
Or not even listening at all.
You sound like a bigot to me.
