BONITA SPRINGS Coastal Clean Up may be a real chore in Bonita Springs this year, if Hurricane Ike keeps its course.
But that isn’t stopping the annual event from being scheduled. Nelson Marine Construction will join Keep Lee County Beautiful and several other sponsors in hosting an event filled with food, fun and trash cleanup.
The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 20.
“We got a monster out there. We may have more to clean up than we had in mind, but yeah, we’re looking forward to it,” said Bonita Mayor and Nelson Marine head Ben Nelson. “Hopefully, the storm will kind of sideswipe us and go somewhere else.”
This year, as in the past, planners are expecting breakfast provided by Doc’s Beach House, lunch from Buffalo Chips Restaurant and end-of-the-day ice cream from Royal Scoop.
Volunteers should meet at Bonita Beach Park, which is on the western end of Bonita Beach Road just as it turns to head north toward Fort Myers Beach. The volunteers will receive cleanup supplies and receive a location to scour for trash. The event not only focuses on the beach but also nearby mangroves.
A statement released by Nelson Marine said that last year, 75 countries removed millions of pounds of trash from the world’s beaches and waterways. The worldwide event is known as International Coastal Cleanup and is organized by The Ocean Conservancy, a nonprofit out of Washington, D.C. Volunteers’ trash will be weighed at the conclusion of the event to find Bonita’s contribution to the worldwide cleanup total.
For the past two years, the event’s future has been in flux, since Marge Ward, the original organizer of the 24-year-old event, stepped down from the Citizens Association of Bonita Beach and handed off the duties to the Bonita Beach Improvement Association in 2006. In 2007, the BBIA voted not to organize the event because members felt the beach was already clean.
Nelson Marine filled in last year to ensure the event went on as scheduled. There are no sponsorship costs, only the time it takes to organize the event.
“It’s a strange thing,” said Nelson, “but we really enjoy it and our employees really enjoy it.”

I found the "a" for coastal. My 17 month old son Cove had it. He had put it in the laundry bin and I didn't find it until this morning. Hope to see you all there! Cabana Dan
