— The vice presidential candidates for both major political parties are planning to visit the Naples area within days or weeks — or hours — of each other in October.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate, hopes to make a campaign stop in Naples in early October, Collier County Republican Committee Chairwoman Carla Dean said Tuesday.

Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, is planning to attend a private fundraiser in early to mid-October at the house of a major Collier County developer, Jack Antaramian.

The developer and his wife, Mona, confirmed that they are working out the details with Biden’s and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign organizers.

Dean said she had no further information about Palin’s visit.

“I don’t have the details,” Dean said.

Plans tentatively call for Palin to appear at an Oct. 6 fundraising luncheon at the Donahue family estate in Port Royal, which hosted President Bush for a similar event in May, according to former state Rep. Dudley Goodlette of Naples.

Earlier that day, Goodlette said, Palin is expected to attend another fundraiser at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club.

Contribution levels for each event and other details are to be announced, he said.

Representatives of Arizona senator and Republican presidential candidate John McCain and state party officials wouldn’t confirm Palin’s visit.

“We can’t confirm anything related to the senator’s travel or (Palin’s) travel until there’s been a formal announcement by the campaign,” Florida Republican Party spokeswoman Katie Gordon said.

The Antaramians said they have been working with Obama/Biden campaign officials for weeks after Mona Antaramian met Michelle Obama at Biden’s first campaign stop in Southwest Florida, when he spoke at a Sept. 3 town hall meeting in Fort Myers.

“We’ve been in touch ever since (that event),” Mona Antaramian said. “We have had a lot of interest in the community.”

The Antaramians said in addition to planning a private event for Biden at their Gordon Drive house, they also hope to hold a second event — possibly a public one — in Naples so many people can attend.

“We are hoping it will be a combination of things, at a couple of different venues, so we can raise as much money as possible for the campaign,” Mona Antaramian said.

Jack Antaramian made a similar comment about raising as much money as possible for Obama and Biden, adding that he is a “reformed Republican” because he believes the country is “desperate for a change.”

As usual for these politicians she most likely will not mingle with the public here. She will do like all the rest, fly into town and go to some overpriced fundraiser, grab a bag on money and high tale it back out of town within a few hours.

It would be nice to see some of these politicians actually mingle and meet the public here once and awhile. Hopefully she will. It would be nice for a change.

Ask this question:

DOES SARAH PALIN HAVE THE EXPERIENCE TO BECOME A PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES?

#6 Posted by bicoastal on September 16, 2008 at 11:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

bicoastal-if you ask that question , you must ask does Obama have the experience to be president? Fair is Fair

#7 Posted by trehuger on September 16, 2008 at 11:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

She has MORE experience than Obama!

So the answer to your question is YES she does!!

#8 Posted by Floridian on September 16, 2008 at 11:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)

#12, I'll answer it by asking if Obama has the experience to be President. Palin is not running for President, at least not yet.

Obama with a 143 days of experience before deciding to run for president and a drug user in his youth, (his words from his book), and a professional clipboard carrier for three years. Bicoastal want's to know if Palin has enough experience. I'll take Palin thanks.

I'm organizing a protest like the one in Alaska - complete with signs like

McPain & Sara Failing
Hockey mom, keep the puck out of Washington
The Alaska disasta
Bush in a Skirt

These were some of the signs by protesters against Gov. Failin in Alaska

#11 Posted by sassy2 on September 16, 2008 at 11:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Bicoastal - not sure she has the intelligence. She has lots of experience so no worries there. Experience in lying, experience in creating her own 'ol boy' network based upon who she liked in school, experience in college transfers, and plenty of experience in the economy because I'm sure she knows the price of, err, lipstick?

Will she be playing victim when she comes? Or will she play the victim role for Putin, Chavez, or the Iranians? Because I don't think playing the gender card will work there.

Sarah Palin???
Ask me if I care?

Who is Sarah Palin anyway?
A pon?
A disgrace to women everywhere?
What's so special about her?
Men have picked unqualified woman to be their flunkies for years. All she would need to do is always agree with him and distract the opposition while he robbs them blind.

What a great day for women...not!

She doesn't stand for women or feminism. Since when has feminism been about a bimbo being used by a powerful man to get what he wants?
Palin threw her name in a hat and never in her wildest dreams did she expect to get picked. Nevertheless, here we are.
How pathetic.

#25 Posted by Caliban on September 16, 2008 at 12:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

point is - you think she'd make a good President because she' spent 18 months as a Governor. Personally, I want a team with brains, and a President that is MORE intelligent than me, I do not want to see my nextdoor neighbor run my life, and I will not vote for somebody I drink beer with. It's not likely that I'll ever meet any President to see if I can 'relate' to them - so my best option is to vote for the person that CAN HANDLE the job. McCain is incompetent, not all there, and has his head in the clouds, Palin is, well, somebody I might employ as maybe an office manager - but then probably have to fire because of high employee turnover rates. Biden knows what he's doing and is very competent and intelligent, and he is very down-to-earth. Obama is the man - he can use his intelligence, unlike Bush and Cheney. Look at Bush & Cheney, aka dumb and dumber, and McCain & Palin, along with the rest of the same old GOP, come on, get real. Like anything will change except for the dress code. It's laughable, and I can't believe anybody is falling for this! Look at the international polls - they are all wondering why American's were stupid enough to elect Bush twice - elect the GOP again via McCain and all credibility is gone!

Take a look at an artical written today by Lee Cary at American Thinker. The title of the story is: Obama's Friends and Chicago's New Slums. (I know you won't, but at least I can hope)

Then come back and tell me what a 'ray of sunshine' your boy is. He really knows who to hang with! What has he ever done to help out the Southside of Chicago? Which by the way, is where he started his career, to clean up the Southside. Even now, while he has the power of being a Senator what has he done? Can we say "ZERO". Yeah, he's the one who we want as leader of Amercia. One who makes promises and never delivers! But dang, he sure knows who has the money to get him where he needs to go! Democats sure picked a winner with this one!

#42 Posted by Citizen_239 on September 16, 2008 at 12:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sarah Palin...

For now she's a celebrity. Get to know her though.

She's a former beauty queen contestant and John McCain, who is known to have committed adultery on his first wife, likes her. He’s met her all of two times before selecting her to run as his vice president.

With this selection McCain certainly stole the spotlight from Barack Obama's great speech on Wednesday night, but in the worst way possible, with an extremely bad decision.

Sarah Palin, a far rightwing Republican, has only served 1/2 a term as Governor of Alaska, a state with such a small population (670,053 - 2006 Census Bureau) that it only has three delegates.

Obama has never been Governor.
Biden has never been Governor.
McCain has never been Governor.

The Republican pundits say as an elected Governor she's more qualified and has more experienced than Obama and Biden, so that makes her more experienced and qualified than McCain too.

According this logic, Sarah Palin is the most qualified and experienced person on either ticket.

This would be hilarious, if not so serious.

McCain is telling the American People that, God forbid, in the event something should happen to him while he's president (if elected), Palin is the best person in America to be President of the United States of America. Shame on John McCain for being willing to leave America in the hands of a novice politician.

Sarah Palin is another status quo candidate. She supports everything Bush/McCain stands for, and worse.

Palin supports making abortion illegal in all circumstances, including that of a rape victim in her first trimester. She favors removing polar bears from the endangered species list so drilling for oil in Alaska's ANWR can become an option, which barring another flip flop, John McCain opposes. Her views on global warming are to the right of George Bush. She's anti-gun laws. She's against gay rights. She supports our schools teaching creationism. It's been reported that she also favored Pat Buchanan for President in 2000.

Sarah Palin's husband worked as a production operator on the North Slope for BP. This could also be another sign of McCain being in the pocket of big oil companies.

Sarah Palin says she hasn't focused much about the war in Iraq. However, like Joe Biden, her son is heading over there soon.

McCain certainly just lost any true moderate Independents that may have considered voting for him, one would think.

To be continued.....

#43 Posted by Ironside on September 16, 2008 at 12:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

McCain's first major decision on the road to the Whitehouse has been a huge mistake! This is a remarkable sign as to what kind of decisions John McCain makes. This mostly unknown vice presidential selection doesn't even come without controversy and scandal.

Many Republican pundits are saying they expect Palin to win the debates over Joe Biden due to "low expectations." That sounds eerily similar like the same way George Bush won them. Republicans are now trying to win debates with “low expectations.” This is ridiculous and irresponsible!

Some Republican women called in to the political talk shows and shown concern that she's willing to go down the road of a vigorous campaign trail and filling the job of vice president with a three month old down-syndrome baby at home.

Also, Sarah Palin is currently under investigation over the controversial firing of a public safety commissioner.

"State lawmakers approved an investigation late last month into whether the governor retaliated against former commissioner Walt Monegan for not firing a state trooper entangled in a divorce and ongoing custody battle with Palin’s sister. The investigation will also examine whether Palin or any of her family members pressured Monegan to fire state trooper Mike Wooten because of the messy divorce." LINK

The women John McCain overlooked that had much higher credentials and paid their dues for the Republican Party:

Kate Hutchison: US Senator from Texas, 1993 - Present - Texas House of Representatives - Texas State Treasurer

Condoleezza Rice: Secretary of State 2005 - Present, National Security Advisor 2001 - 2005

Elizabeth Dole: US Senator from North Carolina, 2003 - Present - U.S. Secretary of Labor - U.S. Secretary of Transportation - President of The American Red Cross

Susan Collins: US Senator from Maine, 1997- Present, other experience; Maine's Deputy Treasurer

Olympia Snowe: US Senator from Maine, 1995 - Present, other experience; Maine House of Representatives, Maine State Senate, United States House of Representatives

Putting a woman on the ticket could have been real good had it been for more reason that to just have a woman on the ticket. It's going to be a tough sell convincing the American People that Sarah Palin is prepared to be President of the United States should something happen to McCain. I can't believe anybody that claims Obama lacks experience would claim Palin doesn't.

This McCain blunder is great for the Obama campaign.

"I have one simple question for the Obama groupies:

Obama had 8 years in the State Senate befor his term in the US Senate, and I have no doubt that Palin's jornalism degree is equal to the being the head of the Harvard Law Review. I have no doubt that Brent Batten of the Naples Daily News is equally as qualified as Palin.

Anyway, Your answers show that you are placing your vote based on racism. I'm sorry but that makes you a social outcast in my book. If he were in fact white, he wuld be polling at 90%.

Oh, come on folks! Bush haters will never change and fire-breathing right wingers will not either. Let's look at some facts, not invented truths. Re: Bush is dumb. Well, the NYT reported that course for course his grades were higher than Kerry's at Yale, but of course the latter is a much better speaker, like Obama. Re: Obama is for change. I believe he is sincere and wants to see America do better for the lower classes by spending more money on programs help them. Whether this will have a positive or negative impact on helping us recover from our downturn is my concern. Also, Obama's record of accomplishments except for being one of many sponsoring bills is skimpy. Re: McCain is also for change. I believe his record of reaching across the aisle on election reform, helping clear the backlog of Judges awaiting appoint, etc. shows me a little something. I do believe that like Obama he is sincere. Re: Biden does he have the experience and character to be a heart beat away from President. Here I give him a big plus in experience for dozens upon dozens of years as a public servant as that has been his life. I do question his character a bit as he freely gave a speech on his life that was word-for-word a speech given by the PM of England without attribution. I also know from a reliabe personal source that he failed to pay bills for work he said he was satisfied with apparently using his politician status as a shield from creditors. I know Truman went bankrupt in the clothing business, but Biden is weathy. Re: Is Palin suitable material to be VP a heart beat away from President. Her obvious charm aside, I believe she compares favorably to must VPs and VP candidates from an experience point of view and even when compared to Obama when it comes to leadership experience. I do not really find fault in her schooling as many college kids of her era took longer to graduate. I believe the bottom line is that the election will be a close call, not unlike the first Kennedy election where a young, well spoken politician had the hard core left and easily captured the imagination of younger voters. I was one of those back then, but I recall that if Cook Cty, Illnois did not narrowly deliver for JFK, he would have lost. My view is that weighing all the pluses and minuses between VP candidates it is a toss up. And, between Obama and McCain, I lean towards the guy with a record, McCain. Just on the basis of what I believe he will do on earmarks and reaching across the aisle in the spirit of what is good for the country. If Obama is elected, I have no fear as he, like Clinton, will govern from the middle as once he is there he no longer needs the left-wing part of this party as he did to defeat Hillary. I only wish he had pick her as his VP.

Mayor Sarah Palin billed RAPE VICTIMS for rape test kits!

This is stunningly AMAZING!
___________________________________
QUOTE:

WASILLA, Alaska — In 2000, Alaska lawmakers learned that rural police agencies had been billing rape victims or their insurance companies $500 to $1,200 for the costs of the forensic medical examinations used to gather evidence. They quickly passed a law prohibiting the practice.
According to the sponsor, Democrat Eric Croft, the law was aimed in part at Wasilla, where now-Gov. Sarah Palin was mayor. When it was signed, Wasilla's police chief expressed displeasure.

"In the past, we've charged the cost of exams to the victims' insurance company when possible," then-chief Charlie Fannon told the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman, the local newspaper. "I just don't want to see any more burden put on the taxpayer."

Now that Palin is the Republican nominee for vice president, Democrats such as former Alaska governor Tony Knowles — who signed the rape-kit bill into law and was defeated by Palin in 2006 — are raising the issue to question Palin's commitment to women's issues and crime victims. Palin appointed Fannon after firing his predecessor shortly after she took office in 1996.

"In retrospect, I would have asked the female working-mother mayor of that town why her police chief was against this," said Croft, the former Anchorage state representative.

Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella said in an e-mail that the governor "does not believe, nor has she ever believed, that rape victims should have to pay for an evidence-gathering test."

"Gov. Palin's position could not be more clear," she said. "To suggest otherwise is a deliberate misrepresentation of her commitment to supporting victims and bringing violent criminals to justice."

ohgeorge - I think you meant to say 'Biden is wealthy'. If you did, then you've been misinformed. Biden has a net worth of under $150,000. His mother lives with him because his father never had a pension. He lost his wife and daughter due to a drunk-driver. That tragedy has not once led him to say that he is an expert on highways and infrstructure, unlike McCain who claims to be an expert on foreign policy and war because he was in one once.

Brilliant answer. The GOP movement is infected with word-twisting, finger-pointers.

Race is the biggest issue in this election.

Palin is just a pon.
A distraction, that the American people won't buy into.

Nice try McCain...but now it's our move.

On November 4th...checkmate.

Some "reformer" Sarah Palin has turned out (NOT) to be!

She's refusing to co-operate with an investigation into "Trooper- Gate"!
___________________________
QUOTE:

Palin won't meet with 'Troopergate' investigator

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Gov. Sarah Palin is unlikely to speak with an independent counsel hired by Alaska lawmakers to review the firing of her public safety commissioner, a spokesman for Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Monday.

Spokesman Ed O'Callaghan said he has not spoken with Palin, but she was "unlikely to cooperate" with the inquiry "as long as it remains tainted."

Democrats charged that the McCain campaign was trying to stall the investigation.

"The partisan presidential campaign of McCain/Palin has interfered and is picking partisan targets to smear in order to make this investigation look like something it isn't," said Patti Higgins, chairwoman of the Alaska Democratic Party. "Rather than cooperating with the investigation, the Republican presidential campaign is doing everything it can to stall and smear."

Sarah Palin is change to what? What "change" will she bring to Washington DC? Please be specific, toting the c-word around without substance is cheesy at best!

Here's the "change" Sarah Palin wants to bring to Washington DC.....

She has sued the federal government to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list to make drilling for oil in Alaska's ANWR an option. That's a radical far rightwing stance on the issue that even John McCain opposes.

She's the queens of earmarks and the first ever mayor in Alaska to hire a lobbying firm to secure funds for a series of earmarks, like $1 million for research on the rockfish.

She wants to make abortion illegal in ALL cases, including that of a rape victim, something even Cindy McCain opposes.

She was the director of indicted Republican Senator Ted Steven's 527 group.

In her acceptance speech Sarah Pailin said, "I told the Congress 'thanks, but no thanks,' for that bridge to nowhere."

Truth be told, when Alaska's Congressional delegation secured the earmark for "bridge to nowhere" she supported it, but of course she was then running for governor. She accepted the funds and used them elsewhere. As mayor of Wasilla, a town with a population of 6,700 people, she hired a lobbying firm to secure more than $26 million in federal earmarks. Evidently she thought the American taxpayer should pay almost a million dollars for the city's sewer repairs and half a million dollars for a youth shelter as well as other programs. Wasilla is located about 45 miles North of Anchorage. She also wanted the American taxpayer to pay for a rail system that would have ran from Wasilla to Ted Steven's resort.

When she became mayor the Wasilla had a surplus. When she left the town had a $22 million deficit.
"That's not change we can believe in."

But, this is the "change" you want in Washington DC?

#77 Posted by Ironside on September 16, 2008 at 1:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

On earmarks:

Sarah Palin wanted the American taxpayer to pay for a rail that would run from her hometown (pop. 6,900) to indicted Republican Senator Ted Stevens’ resort. This is fricken’ amazing!

The more we're learning about her, the more there is to not like about her.
__________________________

Now, while I commend Palin for making some responsible cuts to the state budget, I can’t commend her for the misleading comments that are so unnecessary.

Example:

Sarah Palin, in her acceptance speech told us that she put a luxury jet, that her Republican predecessor had purchased, on eBay. That was all she had to say about it. Ok, true, that happened. She did put it on eBay.

Now let’s listen to McCain elaborate. John McCain said at a rally yesterday,”She sold that jet on eBay (APPLAUSE)….. (PAUSE)….. And she sold it for a profit.”

Ok, I guess putting it eBay wasn’t good enough, or was selling it good enough, so now he’s going to lie about what actually happened.

Facts:

First, she didn’t sell it on eBay. She put in to eBay three times but it never sold, so she sold it to a broker.

Second, she didn’t make a profit. The state bought the jet for $2.7 million and she sold it for $2.1 million.

You know, one would expect the jet to suffer some depreciation. Why the lies? Yes, like she said, she put it on eBay, but it didn’t sell on eBay. So what was the point of even mentioning the fact that she tried selling it there? Why not just say, ‘I sold that luxury jet my predecessor purchased.’ That’s commendable without the misleading eBay comment added. John McCain simply lied when he elaborated and said it sold for a profit.

It’s these exaggerations and lies that the politicians have to be called out on. It’s lies, exaggerations and misleading comments that led to the invasion of Iraq.

How about some “Straight Talk” for a change!

Carly Fiorina, a key surrogate to John McCain, admitted on Tuesday, that Sarah Palin does not have the experience needed to run a major company like the one that she, Fiorina, formerly headed.

"Do you think [Sarah Palin] has the experience to run a major company, like Hewlett Packard?" asked the host.

"No, I don't," responded Fiorina.

#116 - Biden's wife and daughter did die in a traffic accident, but it was not a drunk driver. She pulled in front of a truck that was unable to stop. Tragic, but not a drunk driver. McCain was a POW that they tried to use as a political tool - he recognized that and refused to be sent home out of turn. He spent years learning some of the worst a soldier can be subjected to - I think that qualifies him as knowledgable about war and foreign policy. I don't understand how your wife and daughter being killed in an accident could possibly be compared to personally spending years directly involved in the results of war and foreign policy. Both tragic, but your comparison makes no sense.

Rainman - from what I understand is that "queenies" are the guys who hang around in public restrooms trying to pick up other guys. The Rebublican Convention was a tribute to that fact. St. Paul, Minnesota is a well-known Republican hangout for the GOP to get their freak on.

Funny you should use that choice of word.

#94 Posted by fearisfailure on September 16, 2008 at 2:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

#132 - Is it possible that it was sold at a profit when considering the 2.7 mil it was purchased for in 2005 and the cost of maintaining and storing it in a hangar? Cars lose a good chunk of their value as soon as they leave the showroom - wouldn't that work the same for a plane? If the 2006 value of that jet was around the 2.1 mil it sold for, and the state saved the storage and maintenance costs, then I'd consider it a profit. Even if not, I think it's great that she sold it. Not typical of a politician - they usually keep all the perks they can get and add as many as they can.

#95 Posted by LadyDrafter01 on September 16, 2008 at 2:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I fail to see any significance in saying it was put on eBay when it never sold there. What was the point it? Had it sold there, she'd have had bragging rights, but it didn't, so she failed on eBay... THREE TIMES. Big whoopee!

I want my local officials, Mayor, County Commissioners, etc. to get all the State and Federal monies they can. That's a great part of their job. Palin did her job.

I do not want my Rep or Senator to get that money through blind, hidden earmarks. Vote for it in a legitimate bill.

That's the difference to me. The problem is the granting process not the request.

#97 Posted by DinNaples on September 16, 2008 at 2:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No LadyDrafter, that doesn't translate into profit.

#101 Posted by Ironside on September 16, 2008 at 2:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think selling a plane and getting capital back is great, below is an article from the Chicago SunTimes, great read.
In 2006, Sen. Obama requested an earmark $300,000 to replace and update the projector system at the Adler Planetarium. In 2008, he requested $3,000,000 for replacement of the projector system and other equipment in the Sky Theater. For reference, this is three times the amount he earmarked for the HIV/AIDS Policy and Research Institute at Chicago State University.

While the Adler Planetarium earmarks look normal on the surface, there is a catch. The Chairman and two of the Vice Chairman of the Adler Planetarium Board of Trustees raised a total of almost $250,000 for Sen. Obama’s 2008 Presidential campaign. The Adler Planetarium was probably pleasantly surprised when they found that their earmark increased by $2.7 million dollars, in other words, by a factor of ten.

I am looking forward to this visit by Palin.

Whether you like Obama or McCain, this lady has made this election season a lot more interesting.

I'm just wondering when either party is truely going to deal with the issues. And I dont mean the ones running for office.

How about congress trying to sneak their energy bill through last night. One that keeps the states from getting any reward for letting the states share in the oil revenues generated by drilling off their coasts.

Yeppers , its a good thing we have a Democratic Congress trying to screw all of us living in a state that would recieve oil revenue sharing.

#162 - Thanks for a kind response. I was afraid I might get blasted. I agree it was wrong and unnecessary to exaggerate it, but if I'm reading right, that was McCain, not Palin. I understand that they're both on the same ticket, but I'm disturbed by the frenzy and ferocity of attacks on Palin and some of the bloggers who can't seem to help themselves from the same sexist attitudes they say will hurt her in foreign dealings. I wonder about that myself, especially if people in this country can't get past the fact that she's a woman, but my father-in-law was quick to point to Margaret Thatcher and the respect she's received despite dealing with countries that don't value women's opinions or qualifications.
