NAPLES I am not a golfer, but I like comfortable clothing that has a fashion sense. I stopped into the new Bobby Jones store on Third Street South and was quite taken with the designs, materials and the story of Jones himself. The store sells country club sportswear that looks good on and off the course.
I learned that Jones was born on March 17 and always wore a gold shamrock charm on his watch chain. The limited edition pocket watch ($750) has a shamrock engraved on the back and is number seven in the series.
Jones was always well-dressed and even wore a shirt and tie with his plaid knickers when playing golf. Maybe it was the outfits that enabled him to be the only person in golf history to win the Grand Slam in one year — U.S. Open, British Open, the U.S. Amateur and the British Amateur. You won’t find a tie in the store, but the outfits will give you the elegant look that Jones had.
I really liked the rust and camel striped, mercerized knit short sleeved shirt ($175) paired with a beige argyle vest ($135) of 100 percent cotton. The black Bermuda shorts have a classic pleat and are also cotton ($90). There is also a camel and black striped jacket ($295) that is water resistant. You can ball this jacket up and stuff it into your bag and the wrinkles will magically disappear when you put it on.
If you need a bag, the Hamptons Weekender ($195) is light and a good size as a carry-on for traveling or just to get back and forth to the course. Finish your outfit with a colorful hat ($35) that has a golfer embroidered on the front.
Women can also get a comfortable outfit that goes from the course to running errands or lunch. The paisley printed vanilla skirt ($250) has panties attached and goes perfectly with the brown and vanilla, three button top that is finished with epaulets ($195). Add the quilted, zippered vest ($295) to finish the outfit.
Even though Bobby Jones retired as an amateur, you will look like a professional in these clothes.

Ike Likes It
My husband bought the A&W Float ($5.99 for four bottles) at Sweetbay, thinking it looked interesting. He remembered how he loved the original floats in a frosted mug with vanilla ice cream hanging off the side that he got in diners and drive-ins during his long ago youth.
The verdict: Ike couldn’t get past the first gulp. It had a sour taste and didn’t remind him of the original at all. The only thing he liked was the packaging.
“I know your memory slips as you get older, but this tasted nothing like a root beer float. I thought if I got it really cold it would taste better, but that didn’t work either. I couldn’t even give away the other three bottles — no one wanted to try them. A&W should stick to what it knows best, manufacturing good root beer, and let the drive-ins add the ice cream,” Ike said.
