NAPLES — For the second time in six months, Sterlin Misener Jr. heard an alarm sounding at his North Naples property Friday morning. And for the second time in this short period of time, the 44-year-old found himself face to face with an apparent burglary.
In the first incident in October, four men, one with a gun, were arrested. Friday, Misener had his own gun and shot the alleged intruder, 19-year-old Patrick Hutchison, dead.
Around 4 a.m., according to the Collier County Sheriff’s office, Misener caught Hutchison coming out of a family camper parked in the driveway at 91 Willoughby Drive.
Misener told deputies Hutchison lunged at him and that’s when he shot him. Hutchison was pronounced dead at the scene.
Though some friends and neighbors say Hutchison had been running with a bad crowd of late, they described him as a “good person,” happy and funny, who wasn’t aggressive. The story of him lunging at Misener, they say, just doesn’t add up.
“He’s not out to harm people,” said 17-year-old Aaron Hornyak, a senior at Gulf Coast High School who has known Hutchison since the fourth grade. “That’s the last thing he would have done. He’s not the fighting type.”
Hornyak and 17-year-old Devon Migeot said they used to play paintball with Hutchison in the woods down the road.
“I remember it would be me and him versus a lot of people because we were the best,” Hornyak said.
The news of the shooting rattled the normally quiet neighborhood off Immokalee Road. Neighbors were familiar with both men. Hutchison lived one street over from the Miseners, at 27 Wickliffe Drive
“I was surprised and a little shocked,” said neighbor Kristen Liberth, 42.
Hutchison, who turned 19 on Friday, had been a student at Gulf Coast High School and recently went to Beacon High School, an alternative school. Records indicate that Misener’s sons, Clayton and Gerrit, and daughter, Samantha, all attended Gulf Coast High School with Hutchison last year.
For the past two years, Hutchison lived off and on at his friend Michael Marra’s home, Marra’s mother Judy Marra said.
She called Hutchison a “sweetheart” who got involved in some “stupid teenage stuff,” but said he was not the criminal he is being made out to be in the press.
Though she admits that Hutchison shouldn’t have been on Misener’s property, she said she doesn’t believe that he lunged at him. Hutchison shouldn’t have been shot, she said.
Attempts to reach Misener for comment Friday were unsuccessful.
“He was not in fear of his life,” Marra said of Misener. “He could have picked up the phone and called 911, but he didn’t. He picked up a shotgun and went outside and shot a 19-year-old kid.”
“It is a sad, sad thing across the board,” Marra said.
At Hutchinson’s home, a block down from where he died, the elderly couple that answered the door hours after the incident said that they would not be making any statements to the media.
“We’re not going to talk to you,” the man said before closing the door. “We don’t know anything about it. Give them a chance to get over.”
Afterwards a woman who refused to identify herself, but admitted to being a member of the Hutchison family, said to leave the premises and to never bother the family again.
Anthony Ciani, 23, who lives across the street from the Hutchison home, said he used to play basketball with Hutchison when he was younger, and sometimes showed him his collection of rap and hip hop CDs. Ciani said he thought Hutchison had been hanging out with the wrong crowd recently.
“He’s always been a good person,” Ciani said. “I’ve known him for a long time. He never seemed to be a person with bad intentions.”
According to Collier County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Karie Partington, the determination as to whether or not Misener would be charged with Hutchinson’s death would be up to the State Attorney’s Office.
“The Sheriff’s Office does have an option of turning anything they’ve discovered over to us for review,” said State Attorney’s Office Spokeswoman Samantha Syoen. “At this point, we haven’t been contacted.”
This isn’t the first time this home has been the victim of a burglary.
In October, three men, one of whom had a gun, according to the Sheriff’s Office, confronted Misener and his wife Erika.
In that burglary attempt, the suspects were looking for safes in the home. The suspects were foiled by one of the Misener’s teenage sons who heard the commotion and called 911. Deputies arrived and caught two of the suspects in the home as the third got away with the help of a get-away driver but was eventually arrested.
After the October incident, Liberth, the neighbor, said her family took extra safety precautions.
“I’m a little bit more cautious,” said Liberth on Friday, after dropping off her kids at the bus stop at the southwest corner of Euclid Avenue and Willoughby Drive. “The windows are locked and the doors are locked.”
Lindsay DeJesus, 15, who lives next door to the Miseners, said she’s never had a problem with her neighbors, though she said she’s had some squabbles with Misener’s sons. She said she watched deputies work from her bedroom window on Friday morning, but never heard a gunshot.
“I’m a dead sleeper,” Lindsay said. “I didn’t hear nothing. I think it was my dog that woke my mom up.”
Collier County Sheriff’s crime scene investigators continued to work the scene at Willoughby Drive, while neighborhood residents streamed by throughout the morning, walking their dogs. Chris and Nancy Reyelt, who have lived in the neighborhood for 10 years, walked their Weimaraners Como and Zsarina while investigators continued to canvass the scene.
According to Chris Reyelt, 60, the couple knew of the break-in at the home a few months ago but Friday’s events were still a surprise.
“We’ve never had problems like this,” said Reyelt.
However, 15-year neighborhood resident Blaise Morrow, 62, said the robbery wasn’t at all that surprising — especially in today’s economy.
“I hate to say,” said Morrow, adding that he hopes the economy improves or he expects the crime rate in Collier could get worst. “I don’t know what this was about, but there has been an increase in robberies.”

NDN, hire a proofreader.
Any chance it was a member of the 'Special Olympics' bowling team?

This NDN article was originally titled "Bulgary Shot", guess the cleaning staff going home after their overnight shift caught the error.

StellaBlue you are so wrong, anyone would have been more than willing to be assaulted or killing by this person rather than defend their well being!
Clearly the 'burglar' lost his job, family and house because of George Bush and was simply looking for a few 'patriots' to share their good fortune with him.

Replace "killing" with "killed", guess I am not qualified to be a cleaner.

They were in the house trying to steal his gun collection. They just wanted these for target practice over at StellaBlue's house. Guess they got part of the ammo collection.
And YES Stella I'm happy the good guy won and his family was not raped, robbed or killed.
People like you who put the criminals rights above honest citizens are what has brought this country to its knees.

stellablue must have sons who are thieves and she is wishing to protect them from harm.
The more of these criminal that are shot the less citizens have to worry about.

I know the Miseners; they're a nice young couple. This must be devastating for them and their kids.

Why would this be devastating to them? Someone broke into their house and they forcefully removed him.

Be real: to have someone die a bloody, violent death in your house is devastating. To have your home violated is devastating. Speak to anyone who has killed another person; it's not an easy thing to live with, even if it was justified.
Now, go grow up.

Anyone who wants guns banned should post the following sign on the front of their house:
"NO GUNS ON PREMISES"
The sign on my house says:
"PROTECTED BY BRINKS, SMITH & WESSON"
When someone comes up with a plan to get all of the illegal guns out of the hands of criminals and successfully executes that plan, then come to me for my legal guns!!!

this story doesn't pass the smell test. There's more going on here.

Look at the update beachykeen, the burglar lunged at him, the home owner could have been killed easily with a knife since he began moving towards the home owner, he should have no qualms about his actions. He acted in defense of his property and his life.
Pontiaction writes:
Pretty stupid burglar, if the guy really did lunge at the homeowner (whom, you would think, it would have been easy to see was armed). Especially since the robber was apparently after the homeowner's GUN COLLECTION! Why wouldn't the idiot just make a run for it? Oh well, guess that's why he has to take things from others instead of earning them for himself.
Seriously though, if these folks actually had their home invaded by three criminals recently, I don't blame the homeowner at all for using deadly force when threatened on his own property. He's probably barely had time to recover from the last incident. And at some point enough is enough.
For the anti-gun zealots, I'm sure it wasn't like an action movie, where the homeowner was cackling and shouting gleeful one-liners while he filled the bad guys with lead. Anyone who takes it that lightly shouldn't be carrying.
Journeyman writes:
Give that man a key to the City, or County for that matter. What kind of ammo did he use, so I can buy him a replacement box with a bow on it. Outstanding job sir, in PROTECTING your family and property.
NeezDutz writes:
i for one am sad that someone had to die in this unfortunate incident. BUT i will say one thing, i would not have done anything different to protect my family. Anyone that says any different is just ignorant.
Look at this as a deterrent to future burglars that are thinking about robbing someone. This is 2 incidents in the past 2 weeks or so, that a burglar was shot at.
If you try and rob my house be sure that you will meet resistance.
Just think, anti-gunners, an innocent person could be dead right now and the bad guy could be still roaming the streets with your house next in line.
justme50 writes:
I agree with Comment #19 by thedudesview:
10:1 the sons are less than innocent; take your pick: 1. they ripped off the burglars in a prior drug deal; 2. they bragged to the burglars [and others] as to "stuff" [i.e. cash, drugs, gun] at their house

My point is that there is a mentality amongst some commenters that they almost WISH a perp would enter thier home so they could have the PLEASURE of wasting him. They love guns and find them cool. They are not. Guns are a tool. Nothing more.
Funny how rubes like hindsight and grouper think I am defending the creeps rights. Or that my kids are thieves. LOL. Hardly.
I hate dirtbags too. My point was that many comments on these pages will be the "lucky he wasn't at my house, I have a bazooka" mentality.
Does anyone really want to kill someone?
Some seem to relish the thought.
That's scary too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Castle Doctrine does not apply here since the incident did not take place inside an "occupied dwelling." Since the burglar 'lunged', this is simply a self-defense case.

I never said it wasn't deserved. I would have done the exact same thing as they did; I merely pointed out that it must have been traumatic to a) have someone invade your home and b) have a dead body in your home after the dust settles. Don't care what anyone says, it's a lot to go through.
And I am glad they did what they had to do and that none of them are hurt.

id rather see this story than vice versa, as in the burglar broke in and shot and killed the whole family.
if i owned a gun, and someone tried to break in, you had better bet that i would use the gun. if you dont like being shot , then dont rob someones house! i have 2 small children.....dont mess with my kids!
why is it that people find it neccessary to defend the criminal, before defending the victim?? its crazy

I suppose you would have preferred the homeowner's death?

The Naples Daily News has cut way back on getting local news stories covered correctly.
That is so they can concentrate on advancing the Obama socialist agenda.
They even refuse to mention the upcoming Naples Tea Party to be held on April 15th at the intersection of US 41 and Pine Ridge Road between 12 Noon and 2 PM.
Bring your signs, your tea bags, family and friends and stay as long as you like. Make your voice heard, like millions of others who have participated in the Tea Party movement. Mark it on your calendar and spread the word.

Can there not be a second Naples area 'tea party' after normal work hours, weekend or after 5pm, the majority of those working and paying taxes for the socialists to spend are not available between 12 Noon and 2pm.

have decide to prey on your loved ones and the pocessions you've provided them. If I remember correctly you have the right to own a hand gun in Collier County I live in Chicago, last year we led the nation with the highest murder rate, this year we are already in the high double digits. I work for the Chicago Fire Dept. in one of the busiest neighborhoods in the country (Englewood). In the city of Chicago you by law are not allowed to own a hand gun, so not to sound sexes here but most smaller woman are now required to handle a shotgun or rifle if they feel there safety or the safety of there family is threatened. The murders that happen in Chicago where done mostly by by gang banger using hand guns so if by the law you can't own a hand gun how are these criminals allowed too. This is all my opinion and not meant to say someone is right or wrong for what they believe but the bottom line in this case is a CRIMINAL was killed for breaking the law and I have a feeling this wasn't the first time he's done something wrong. Hopefully the Naples News will print this criminals past arrest record. This poor family has gone through two attempted robberies and good for him taking a stand.
