VIDEO/PHOTOS: Florida restricts harvest of snook, certain other fish because of cold snap

Video from NBC-2

— The state has temporarily restricted the capture of certain saltwater fish because the recent cold snap killed too many of them.

The state canceled the upcoming snook season and banned the harvest and possession of bonefish and tarpon until April.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says only catch and release of these species is allowed.

The cold snap killed thousands of fish.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Chairman Rodney Barreto called the measures "a proactive, precautionary approach." He said it is warranted to preserve the state's population of snook, bonefish and tarpon, which are among Florida's most popular game fish species.

A sad sad week for recreational inshore fishermen. On my Saturday out in the 10,000 Islands I saw scores of snook, tarpon, gray triggerfish, mullet, striped mojara, catfish and pinfish. The lasting effect will takes years to rebound, affecting the 10 billion per year in revenue recreational fishing brings to FL. There is no bright side, fish populations are decimated and need to be revived with strict closures for all affected species for the years to come.

Anyone who has kept a bonefish or tarpon in the last 15 yrs in an aHole anyway. They also need to add redfish to the ban, they were almost gone before the cold snap.

Snooker makes the best point yet...this is an example of how the FWC and state agencies takes advantage of opportunities to restrict ANY harvest of fish. Look at the Red Snapper and Grouper bans in the GOM in place right now, STUPID as most anglers don't travel the necessary 70+ miles each way to find true American Red Snappers, WTF
