So many writers have written and so many broadcasters have discussed what will become of the game without: A) A dominant player; B) An intense, two-man rivalry; C) Without Tiger.
Let's look back at this season so far. A young South African (Charl Schwartzel) birdies the last four at Augusta to steal the green jacket. A young, ultra-talented Irishman (Rory McIlroy) wins our Open and a middle-aged, ultra-experenced Irishman (Darren Clarke) wins our hearts at "The Open."
We have Ryo Ishikawa, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Webb Simpson, Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey, three great Italians (the Molinari brothers and Matteo Manassero), a still-young Adam Scott, and a ton of young talent worldwide. Just over the horizon, stars are ready to explode on the scene en masse.
There has been much talk about the PGA Tour's next TV contract. Let me tell you, Mr. TV Executive, sharpen your pencil because this golf professional thinks we just might be headed into the most exciting time ever, yes, ever, in our game's history.
I agree that Tiger had a lot to do with golf's explosion and popularity. However, I don't agree Tiger was the only reason. Greg Norman, Fred Couples, and the likes of Seve Ballesteros over the last two decades were rock star-type personalities. These guys and players like them teed it up, so to speak, for Tiger. Now men's golf has great depth.
The PGA Championship two weeks ago and the Champions Tour's final major this past week were both great fun and great golf to watch. It seems like every week there are some really incredible shots being hit by athletes who can make the ball dance.
I contend the sport is healthy, and the talent is deep and here to stay.
