Ave Maria senior academic officer to retire

Ave Maria University's senior academic officer plans to retire Dec. 31 after eight years at the school.

Jack Sites, senior vice president for academic affairs, said he's accomplished what he set out to do at Ave Maria: get the school on its feet and ready to move forward.

"I think it's time for someone else to take the baton and go forward," he said, adding that he has great respect for the school and its faculty and students. "There's a time at every organization where you've done what you can do and it's time to move on."

Sites was instrumental in Ave Maria's accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and helped build its faculty and core curriculum, he school's president, Jim Towey said in an e-mail to the Ave Maria community.

Dean Michael Dauphinais will assume the position of interim vice president for academic affairs beginning Jan. 1, Towey wrote in the e-mail. Towey plans to work with the board of trustees to determine a timetable and search process for a permanent replacement in 2012-13.

Hard to believe that Jack, living in the middle of nowhere, lonesome for society, would pass his trusty baton.
