Letter: Sometimes sour

Allen Miller, Naples

Sometimes sour

Ben Bova's Jan. 29 commentary on losing weight by eating grapefruit is well-intentioned, but readers should be advised that grapefruit juice can interact with a number of therapeutically important drugs, leading to the possibility of toxicity.

A list of over 50 drugs adversely affected by grapefruit juice includes some common ones, such as statins, calcium channel blockers and sleeping pills.

These findings were published in the August 2001 issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology based on work at the Tufts University School of Medicine.

Readers would be advised to check for drug interaction before making grapefruit juice a part of their diet.
