Still skeptical
I was amused by the guest commentary by local Fire Commissioners Kevin Gerrity and Jim Burke seeking to merge the Emergency Medical Services and fire districts in Collier County.
The fire districts are in trouble now because of the excessive compensation packages given by the commissioners. There is and has been no accountability. The commissioners have doled out more and more money to the departments over the years. Now with tax revenues declining, it is coming home to roost.
The fire departments want to merge, but they don't want to report to the county. If they reported to the county, they would have to be accountable.
The current commissioner system poorly managed the smaller fire department fiefdoms.
Why should the taxpayer believe that this same system could properly manage a much larger, merged organization?
