Men's golf: FGCU finishes eighth in spring opener

The Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf team placed eighth in the Sea Best Invitational hosted by Jacksonville University on Tuesday at TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach.

The Eagles bettered both of Monday's first- and second-round scores, shooting a 303, but only moved up one spot. FGCU had a 924 total, one behind Old Dominion and four behind fellow Atlantic Sun Conference member East Tennessee State. The A-Sun's UNF was third at 902.

Florida won with an 884 total.

FGCU's Brandon Pena came into the final round in second place, but shot a 77 and slid to seventh with a 220 total. Alex Medinis had a 72 to lead the Eagles, and tied for 11th with a 223.

Jack Hernandez shot a 75 and tied for 28th at 231, Jeremy Self had a 79 for a 253 and a tie for 65th, and Niklas Ahola had an 86 for a 260 total and was 68th.
