Obama radio address: Time to shift attention from wars to home

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says his goal of defeating al-Qaida is within reach and that it's time to turn the country's attention to domestic concerns.

Just four days after his trip to Afghanistan, Obama said that money saved from ending wars in Iraq and Afghanistan should help pay down the national debt and go to health care, education and infrastructure.

"After more than a decade of war, it is time to focus on nation-building here at home," he said in his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday.

The president took note of the agreement he signed with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday that shifts security to the Afghan people. He reminded the American public, once again, of the military raid that killed Osama bin Laden a year ago.

But he said the nation now should concentrate on economic issues such as tax disparities and government spending. Without mentioning Republicans, he cast the GOP view as one that promotes more tax cuts for millionaires while cutting spending "that built a strong middle class."

"That's why I've called on Congress to take the money we're no longer spending at war, use half of it to pay down our debt and use the other half to rebuild America," he said.

The partisan subtext of the address was clear. Obama is portraying Republicans as the party of the wealthy as he seeks to demonstrate action in the face of a slow economic recovery.

The address came as he went out on his first official campaign trip Saturday, visiting college campuses in Ohio and Virginia.

In the Republican address, Sen. Bob Corker accused the administration and the Senate's Democratic leadership of fiscal mismanagement, saying they have put off difficult decisions that would tame government spending.

"The president punts on almost every tough decision," Corker said.

The Senate's failure to adopt a budget has helped create an atmosphere of uncertainty that is hurting businesses and impeding job creation, the Tennessee Republican said. He called for an overhaul of the tax code that eliminates most of the $1.2 trillion in loopholes and tax breaks, and lowers rates and broadens the tax base.

It seems to me that the previous administration got us into this mess to begin with. Since when was Iraq ever our enemy? Oh,yeah, WMDs. Where, oh where are those pesky WMDs anyway?

years ago amerika strong armed a deal to make the us dollar the reserve currency. when other countries buy oil from saudi arabia they MUST pay in dollars. that is why gas has cost less in the US than any other country in the world. now the worlds most corrupt terrorist police state is worried! amerika tried to strong arm iran with its oil embargo. amerika failed! iran simply made a deal with china and india to sell oil for gold. amerika the world bully FAILED! amerika cant bully china or india. amerika can only bully smaller weaker countries. now...amerika is REALLy worried..not because the oil embargo failed...but because china, india, and other countries are now trading partners REFUSING to trade in US dollars! so..as other countries start using their own currencies in trade agreements the bully amerika loses more of its power. At a certain point the status of the US dollar as the worlds reserve currency will end. overnight gas, food, everything will soar in price! why has gas cost $5, $6 a gallon in other countries for many years? because those countries have been FORCED to trade in their currencies for uS dollars and then pay for their oil with them. Now..those days are almost over. China, iran, india, venezuela..and many more to come have told amerika they don't need their stinking dollars! As more countries adopt that idea..and get rid of US dollars..they get rid of the bully. They will not be subject to amerika and its bully tactics.

Sounds like a commie plot to me!!! Imagine rebuilding "our" own roads, schools, bridges, power grid,etc.. Putting American's back to work in America? That's just unheard of. I suppose with their new incomes, they will buy new American Cars, and buy new American homes. What is this President thinking? Surely, surely you can't trust the middle class, with disposable income? "If" they have extra money; they may fall prey to the same crooks as before. Give them just enough to survive and that's it; otherwise, they will take vacations and spend even more money in America. Just look what happened last time they had disposable income!!! No, now is not the time to speak on results; it's time to still be afraid, very, very afraid. Americans simply can not handle success; A strong economy should be reserved for only those (like Mitt) that can handle it. Like Mitt, they will invest in overseas markets, they will open Swiss bank accounts, they will hide their new found wealth in offshore banks. No, not in this life time can you put faith in the middle class; it simply can't handle being secure in thier freedoms.

I don't read one word of hatred in DamYankee's comment.

What he may be saying is that he wants a better direction for himself/herself and this country, one of success and respect, which Mr. Obama has not been able to deliver. We really do need an intelligent leader. We just don't have that right now. You can mask problems for so long, then they come out to bite you.

It's just impossible for someone who is on vacation every 3 months spending taxpayers money on the trip and coming back, then traveling to other countries right behind that and not dealing with the problems at hand with this nation to get anything done. I think he knows he will not be here four more years. Certainly,
his initial staff knows it. They've all left.

The Democratically controlled Senate hasn't pass a budget in over 1,000 days. Both need to be fixed/reformed....all Democrats want to do is leave it alone - keep stealing money from them and spend more.

So when you can come up with some facts instead of BS Democratic talking points or just a general support for marxist/socialist policy, then I would be interested in hearing it.

What are you afraid of if Republicans take over? That they might reduce spending? That the federal government will be reduced in size? That more money and power will go to the states where it belongs? That our borders will be secured? That a balanced budget ammendment might be passed? That we may actually run the government on a budget and not spend more than we take in? That our tax code will be fixed? That all americans except the truly downtrodden will have to contribute to the American economy through taxes and jobs? That our allys will again respect America and our enemies fear us?

I mean the worst that can happen is the Republicans finish what Obama started and bankrupt America so why not put someone competent in the White House and see what happens?
