Barron Collier’s Alex Sweet teamed with Bishop Verot’s Linda Kornienko in a decisive mixed doubles match to propel the Southwest Florida entry into the finals of the inaugural High School Tennis All-Star Tournament in Daytona Beach.
Sweet and Kornienko trailed 4-1, but rattled off five straight points to top the team from Region 4, representing Brevard, Seminole, Orange and Volusia counties.
The Southwest Florida team — with members Sweet, Kornienko, Zach Mearsheimer of Naples High, Parker Wodall of Cypress Lake and Nia Eddie of Bishop Verot — will play Region 6 (Palm Beach area) at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Embry-Riddle University.
Earlier Saturday, Mearsheimer and Sweet topped Lakewood Ranch’s Amav and Arsav Mohanty, who last month won the FHSAA Class 3A boys doubles state championship.
