The Region 7 high school tennis team representing Southwest Florida defeated Region 6 to win the inaugural High School Tennis All-Star Tournament on Sunday in Daytona Beach.

The championship match went down to the mixed doubles, with Alex Sweet of Barron Collier and Linda Kornienko of Bishop Verot winning their match, 6-2, for the decisive point over the team representing the Port St. Lucie/Palm Beach area. Zach Mearsheimer of Naples High, Parker Woodall of Cypress Lake and Nia Eddie of Bishop Verot were the other members of the team, which was coached by Tony Kamen of Naples High and Mary Gibson of Bishop Verot.

"It was a great weekend of tennis, and a great way to end the high school careers for these senior all star tennis players that were representing the eight Florida regions," Kamen said. "I'm excited that tennis finally has an all-star event to showcase and do something special for its seniors such as is done in other sports.

"Winning the inaugural event and bringing home the trophy to Region 7 -- Southwest Florida -- was the icing on the cake."
