A 27-year-old Collier County School District tutor faces two sex crime charges involving a minor he thought was 18 years old.

Nelson Jean, of the 2000 block of 49th Terrace Southwest, Golden Gate, was arrested Tuesday by Collier deputies who said he was sexually involved with a minor. Jean has been employed as a Haitian Creole tutor at Manatee Elementary School since August 2008. Jean, who remains in jail on $100,000 will be required to report to human resources officials if he tries to return to work, school district officials said.

Deputies found Jean and the minor in the back seat of a car parked in front of an undisclosed residence at about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, an arrest report said. The girl, whose age isn't being released, initially told deputies that she and Jean kissed and touched each other inside the car. She later admitted to having sex with Jean, the report said.

The girl told deputies she met Jean two years ago on Facebook and that she knows him through their church. At first contact with police, the girl told deputies she was 18 years old, the report said.

When questioned by investigators, Jean said he thought the girl was 18 years old. He confirmed they met through Facebook. Nelson admitted to sexual contact, leading to his arrest, the report said.

Collier County has hired a Creole language tutor? What we need are more English language tutors. Hopefully, the cost reductions planned for Collier schools will include the elemination of Creole, Amish, Ebonics, etc tutors.

^ Agreed. We're now up to 101 positions that have been cut.

Only the Naples Daily News thinks we have Creole language tutors in Collier County.

As part of the schools system's English for speakers of other languages, ESOL, county schools do have Spanish and Creole tutors to assist those children unable to understand any English. The ESOL program is a total immersion process where only English is spoken.

We all want fluent English speakers here; those children without any concept of English vocabulary, grammar, or pronunciation are accorded a bridge between their only means of communication, and our language.

Thank You for the clarification and I support the ESOL concept. Its too bad that the NDN missed that detail in their rush to get a sex crime published

The only way to learn English is to be in an all English environment. Having half----- tutoring by sex perverts is not helping these Haitian girls, unless they are studying prostitution.

I am moving back to Pennsylvania this summer. Naples is a great place to visit but to raise a child here is a nightmare.

People love to blame the school because their kids are dumb. Guess what, your little angel skipped class to smoke or f*ng*rbl*st Mary Jane RottenCrotch in the parking lot. CCPS produces more than a few very talented students, if your kid isn't one of them we also have a great VoTech.

He is sitting in jail for sexual abuse because he wasn't smart enough to know that in this day and age you don't have sex with anyone without a full background check, ID, thumbprint, and DNA sample to prove age. They were referring to the actual facilities.
We do have some of the best buildings and athletic fields money can buy.
Unfortunately all the money in the world can't make ignorant parents bring in curious kids wanting to learn.

Who is 'they'? I never heard anything saying Collier County schools are the best in the country. And it's not necessarily the Hatians and Mexicans' fault either.

She lied to the gestapo about her age...so why would anyone believe she didn't lie to him. Of course, if she was in the classes at the elementary school that might have been a clue!

Thats right on ! I suppose Penn never had this happen in their State. Their is bad apples in Every State. I think that's just an excuse to leave Naples period. Go back to your perfect cold State.

Collier County's ESOL program is outstanding and does a terrific job of educating students in ENGLISH. The tutors are there to bridge the gap between the students' native language and English. The goal is language acquisition. Once fluency in English is accomplished, the students are exited to mainstream classes.

Obviously, there was deception and an error in judgement. The girl lied to the police as well. I knew Jean as an ESOL student. He is a fine young man, with strong character. I know he is mortified by this. He is not a pervert as he has been characterized. I am sure he thought he was in a consentual relationship with a person of legal age. My heart goes out to him. He is a good man. It's a shame that this has happened.

Ittybitty writes:

They met on Facebook...no one ever lies there!

unfatcat writes:

The internet age seems to pose multiple serious problems for teens and underteens. I'm starting to believe that it should be illegal for children under 17 or so to be part of the internet experience at all--cell phones, face book, dating sites.

The first issue is perverts. It used to be that one had to walk into an adult book store and risk people seeing them going in; thereby reducing the number of participants in the would-be perverted world. But today people just do whatever they think they can get away with from the privacy of their own home. Porn is the #1 business of the internet. Should we be proud of that?

I am quite concerned, maybe unnecessary, about the new home security system that monitors children in their own home. Isn't this a perpetrator gift?

Then there's "bullying," having caused numerous suicides in this country by kids typing words, sending pictures, and contributing as a mob against a victim. This is an internet crime. Bulling has always been around person-to-person and is an important part of growing up and learning to defend oneself. But one cannot win against the internet.

Children could participate in intranet instead of internet, meaning only the school would have access to the postings.

We don't have to go down this road. The warning flags have been flying for a couple years now.

If you think the gubmint schools someplace else does not have the same deplorable conditions, you’re delusional.

It’s past the point of describing them as “some are better than others” and has reached the point of “some are worse than others”. But you go on and think that YOUR kids school is one of the “good” ones.

Have fun in PA, may I suggest Philly?

Move to Philly? No way, I am a Yinzer. Upper St Claire, PA to be exact. I have been here for 18 years and have seen this place getting worse. Not quite sure why you people care what anyone does. BTW, I will have fun in the most livable city. You enjoy the smell of Ben Gay of nasty old farts and all the trash here!!!!!!!!

funhaha writes:

As a parent, I am an advocate of children. However, I am not naive. I know that children lie about their age- I was one of those children back in my youth! Also, in this day and age, children look a lot older than they are. I remember being 14 and looking 14 (or younger), but I have seen many 10 year olds with the face, body and attitude of 16 year olds, and many 16 year old's with the face, body and attitude of 20 year olds.

If this child lied to police about her age, I am sure she lied to this man. There might be proof in facebook messages, so more information might come....but I wouldn't bash the man too much until further information comes. I definitely wouldn't call him a pervert yet. Facts may arise that this girl did say she was 18, he may have thought she was 18 and never contemplated she was younger, and now he could possibly be ruined for life over a girl's lie. I would wait for the facts. Too many ignorant comments on here, too many people trying to talk like they are intelligent when an actual intelligent person can tell it's a bunch of bull.

As for the making out in a car- it's been done for many a year, will be done for many a year, and that's neither here nor there.
