Local youth column: Naples Bears Rugby Club state champs again

— The Naples Bears rugby team pulled out a 24-23 thriller over Miami in the Florida Youth Rugby Union championship match on May 5.

The Bears, made up of players from area high schools but mainly Palmetto Ridge and Gulf Coast, led 24-11 late in the match after tournament MVP Nico Zuluaga scored a try.

However, Miami scored twice, the last coming as time ran out, to close within 24-23. Miami then lined up for a 2-point kick after for the win but missed.

With the victory at the Okeechobee County Sports Complex, the Bears won their sixth Florida High School Championship in the league’s eight years. The Bears finished undefeated this season and has a 75-6 overall record since 2005.

The team is coached by Reed Jarvi.

Scoring in the championship match started with a Miami penalty kick at 6 minutes to take a 3-0 lead. Five minutes later, the Bears were awarded a penalty kick at the the Miami 25-yard line.

Using the wall penalty play, the Bears’ Frank Cirone scored with a 25-yard run to give his team a 5-3 lead. The kick after failed. At 16 minutes, the Bears took a scrum off the head at midfield. Once again, the Bears' Cirone picked up the ball for a long run. On the play, Miami attempted a body block tackle and was cited for a penalty. Bears fly half Zimon Brennan made the kick after, and the Bears were ahead 12-3.

At 24 minutes, Miami made another penalty kick to make the score 12-6 at the half.

Six minutes into the second, there was a Miami lineout at its 25-yard line. Miami got the ball, but flanker Jimmy Brouchard stripped the ball from the Miami jumper and started a ruck. Zuluaga picked up the ball and passed off to winger Jean Fortin who was able to get to the 5-yard line, leading to a Cirone try and a 17-6 Bears lead.

The victory capped the Bears season.
