An East Naples teen who was critically injured Monday in a head-on collision near Ave Maria was moved from Lee Memorial Hospital to a Tampa hospital on Tuesday, according to his family.
Kenny Altidor, 14, was a passenger in a 1987 Toyota pickup that collided with a semi near the intersection of Camp Keais and Immokalee roads. His father, Emil Kelly Altidor, 42, was killed in the crash.
As of Tuesday evening, the 14-year-old had not been able to talk with his family and remained in critical condition, said Minou Altidor, his mother's cousin.
Emil Altidor had been a cook at the Snook Inn in Marco Island for more than a decade, manager David Scott said.
"I've known him for 12 years, and he's a very dependable, reliable, great person," Scott said. "Any time somebody's been here that long, it hits really close to home. It's hard on everybody."
The younger Altidor is an eighth-grader at East Naples Middle School. The family also has an 11-year-old daughter, Minou Altidor said.
Kenny Altidor was expected to attend school next year at Golden Gate High School, Principal Jose Hernandez said.
"He was planning on playing freshman football for us, so he has attended our freshman spring football practice," Hernandez said Friday. "We all pray and hope he'll be fine."
According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, the Altidors' pickup was headed north on Camp Keais Road around 7:15 p.m. Monday when it traveled onto the east shoulder. Emil Altidor overcorrected and lost control of the truck, which went into the southbound lane and ended up underneath a semi, according to an FHP report.
The semi's driver, Ernesto Alvarez Blanco, 55, also of the Naples area, was not injured in the crash. All three were wearing seat belts, and alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the collision.
