Local Spelling Bee contestants still on mark through Round 3

The local entries are still on top of their games in the third round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Kayla Sheffield of Lee County stayed sweet in the competition spelling "maraschino" correctly.

Princeton Ballarino of Collier County didn't stew in the third round correctly spelling "lobscouse."


Both Collier and Lee county's Scripps Spelling Bee finalists are off to a good start in the national competition that began today.

Kayla Sheffield of Lee County, speller 39, spelled "ecru" correctly in round two. Princeton Ballarino of Collier County, speller 41, spelled "alchemy" correctly in round two.

On Tuesday, the 278 contestants took a written test and the scores will determine if they move on in the competition.
