A Fort Myers motorcyclist was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a driver just south of Alico Road.
Around 2:30 p.m., Anthony R. Donaldson, 62, was riding north on U.S. 41 on a BMW R75/5 when he was struck by a Honda Fit driven by Silvia G. De Alcantara, 48, also of Fort Myers, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers said De Alcantara was crossing U.S. 41 on Harborage Drive and did not see Donaldson.
Donaldson, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition. De Alcantara was not injured.
Troopers said Donaldson would be cited for improper headgear on a rider/operator and De Alcantara, for a violation of right of way from a stop sign.
Alcohol was not suspected to a factor in the crash, according to a report.

Both were contributors to injuries!
De Alcantara for being an idiot driver and Donaldson for stupidly not wearing a helmet!

Cited for improper head gear? There is no helmet law. What did I miss? I value my head and I wear a helmet, but it's not the law.
ConcernedinCollier writes:
There is a helmet law in Florida. You have to have $10k of medical insurance coverage.

How many bikers in accidents are cited for riding without a helmet and not having insurance. Just wondering, hope the rider is OK.

Also might be that he had no eye protection. That is required.

Dew rags are not considered head gear?
Surprised a BMW rider was without the brain-bucket.
Oh well, tomorrow's another day. Be careful everyone!
Colorado (Inactive) writes:
Thanks, I forgot about that requirement.

What a joke. I wonder how much 10K of medical insurance will cover for brain surgery. Might just get you that helicopter ride to the trauma center.

Sorry if I offended anyone with my post. I am facinated with motorcycle. I have always been since I was a child. I own a Harley Davidson and I love to ride. Even though I have insurance I always use my Helmet. Sorry to say some people never learn, but once you sit on that Bike you don't have no protection especially in Florida. People always driving in a rush and some refuse to see you. I don't care how much money you spend putting loud pipes on your bike, some people will ignore that too. Please for you own sake and every one around You Put a Helmet on, it will save some brain Cells. Please Ride Safe and may God Bless your Choices, Amen.....Live To Ride and Ride to Live.............

I think that F.S. 316.211 (b) states: Notwithstanding subsection (1), a person over 21 years of age may operate or ride upon a motorcycle without wearing protective headgear securely fastened upon his or her head if such person is covered by an insurance policy providing for at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred as a result of a crash while operating or riding on a motorcycle.
So...If he had proper medical insurance benefits, you are correct, it is not lawful for him to wear a helmet; otherwise....

Between the elderly and the self-important wealthy, these are truly some of the most dangerous roads in the country. You have to ride super-defensively down here. That means sticking to the middle lane on 41, Airport, Davis, ..where fewer cars will enter or exit abruptly. It means separating from trafic at every green light. It means hand signals in addition to directionals. It means that if you don't get eye contact from a driver as you near an intersection, you brake. And above all, yea, you HAVE to wear a helmet down here -- regardless of what the law says.

More of your BS, he would have been hurt even if he had on a suit of armor.

Separating from traffic is fun!
anotherPOV writes:
Years ago I earned a ticket for "reckless driving" while seperating myself from traffic. Never broke the speed limit but he thought I accelerated too fast, whatever. Still do it, but now that I'm old and on a cruiser it's not quite as quick as it used to be.

Totally agree.
