FORT MYERS — Eight people were injured and two drivers were arrested on DUI charges Sunday morning after six vehicles were involved in five crashes on Interstate 75 in south Fort Myers.
The initial crash occurred about 2:15 a.m. Sunday at mile marker 126 in the southbound lanes of the interstate, the Florida Highway Patrol reports. Southbound I-75 south of Alico Road was closed for nearly eight hours.
Arrested were drivers Andrew Rojas, 23, of Estero and Andres Hernandez-Dominguez, 34, of Naples on suspicion of drunken driving with injuries and careless driving.
In addition to the six drivers, nine passengers were involved in the crashes. Eight people were injured, FHP reported.
The first crash occurred when Rojas, who was driving a 1990 Chevy truck, rear-ended the 1999 Ford Expedition Angela Hernandes, 49, of Naples, was driving along southbound I-75. Rojas’ truck then veered off the road and stopped on in the west grass shoulder, facing south. The impact caused Hernandes’ Ford to became disabled in the center southbound lane, FHP reported.
Hernandez-Dominguez, who was driving south in I-75 in a 2005 Hyundai SUV, then hit Hernandes’ vehicle from behind, causing Hernandez-Dominguez’s SUV to eventually stop in an I-75 emergency lane, facing south.
The third crash happened when Heidi Lane, 34, of Naples, was driving a 2005 GMC SUV that hit Hernandes’ disabled Ford. Lane’s SUV finally rested in a southbound lane, facing south.
In the fourth crash, Martin Portillo-Navarro, 32, of Naples was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry when he swerved to avoid Hernandes’ vehicle. This caused Portillo-Navarro to hit a center media guardrail.
The fifth crash occurred when Gloria Medina, 54, of Bonita Springs, was driving her 2006 Toyota SUV south on I-75. Her SUV hit Hernandes’ Ford, which was struck a total four times.
Passengers in Hernandes’ vehicle were David Hernandes, 7, of Naples, who suffered serious injuries; and Elda Hernandes, 13, Nayel Hernandes, 6, and Estevan Velaseo, 32, all of Naples, who all suffered minor injuries.
Jose Prado, 30, of Naples, who was a passenger in Hernandez-Dominguez’s Hyundai, suffered minor injuries. Andrada Ploscaru, 21, of Naples, also a passenger, wasn’t injured.
Alejandro Hernandez-Murillo, 29, of Naples, who was a passenger in Portillo-Navarro’s Camry, wasn’t injured.
A passenger in Medina’s SUV suffered minor injuries but FHP reported her name and information were undetermined. Medina also suffered minor injuries.

For our safety, let's ban cars and people going out after dark!

They need to give these DUIs about 15 years in prison. Maybe that will curtail the habitual drunks! We shouldn't wait until somebody is dead or paralyzed or whatever. Just let them know you don't want to live here and be a drunk on the road.

Are you okay with raising the state tax rates so we can build all of those prisons and add staff?? Can't be state income tax rate because we don't have one. Maybe 1 year mandatory, especially for those happening between Midnight to 3 AM, kind of like raising the highway fines in a construction area.

Any bets on who has auto insurance? I can think of one driver who's insurance will probaly be picking up the entire tab, as well as the tax payers.

Then again, maybe not; stranger things have happened.

Probably looked like someone broke a pinata. ( sorry, couldn't figure out how to put the little gizmo over the n ).
Don't drink and drive and always wear your seat belt.
Here's hoping the little ones and the innocents recover quickly.

What country did this happen in? One with insurance...probably right. Drivers license...be interesting to see how many were valid.

Why blame our Governor? You should blame Obama for allowing the illegals to stay in the USA.

I agree lets ban people from going out after dark, a stop light is a must, and stricter guns laws would have prevented this! License, registration and insurance please! Tee Hee

As long as we allow and encourage these illegal dirt bags to stay in this country, they will continue to suck us dry in medical, educational and judicial expenses. Now add those expenses to the entitlements they receive and this country will end up like the ones these people left....bankrupt and corrupt.
So lets let all the illegals that:
don't have a criminal record, including NVDL
speak English
don't receive any entitlements
AND have had employment for 4 consecutive years
apply for citizenship.
Under these provisions I bet at best 10% would qualify.
Deport the rest and seal the borders. The END

If you cant identify a stopped/disabled vehicle - even at night (are you driving too fast for your headlights?) then you shouldnt be driving.
ie. you dont have the reaction time needed to be on the roadways.

Are you sure this happened here? I was reading all the names and it sounded like it was in Mexico. But hey, now we know they are all moving at night....where is ICE?
Davidh239 writes:
The first people that will complain are the ones that stop and pick up these undocumented workers for day labor, avoid workmans comp, pay cash and not pay any payroll taxes on them.
The others that will complain are the slumlords, Metro PCS, buy here pay here that don't require drivers license. Equally responsible is the State, which only requires a passport and insurance which they promptly cancel (no drivers license is required to register a vehicle and obtain a plate).
Many insurance companies will also issue a binder and collect monthly payments which promptly lapse and the pseudo insurance is cancelled. If you are unfortunate to have one of these mutts run into you, assuming that they don't hit and run, the insurance won't pay.
It's all about the money.

Nice FAMILY type folks.

It's all about the votes also. The democrats have been using the illegals to get their canidates elected. Villainizing the republicans for immigration reform and pandering to the people who have a least 1 member of the family who does have a green card. Scare tactics that have turned the country into place that is hardly recognizable as america anymore. The high school kids used to work the low paying jobs for real world experience are gone. The crime and the gangs that infiltrate further every day. The car accidents like this one and the insurance scams. Everyone knows it has overwhelmed the system and created a discouraged attitude overall. Go ahead and press"2" now, and call me all the names you want.

Not EVERYONE driving after midnight is drunk. I worked nights for 20 years. I hoped I wouldn't come across an accident or drunk driver like this. I called in quite a few swerving drivers.
Magic81 writes:
Was it ever reported that any of these were illegals?? Or didn't have a license or registration? Curious people want to know. It's not about them, it's about us.
RationalThinker writes:
No, it's just the ignorant racists making assumptions based on the people's names.
