EAST NAPLES — Collier County sheriff’s deputies continued Saturday to try to identify a man who they believe walked to an East Naples Home Depot with a gunshot wound.
The man was taken Friday night by medical helicopter to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, where sheriff’s officials said he remained on Saturday.
The only new information Collier County deputies said they could share Saturday was that the shooting happened at the nearby Heron Park Apartments, off Airport-Pulling Road near Davis Boulevard.
“He managed to make it from there to Home Depot on foot,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Krista Williamson said.
Lori Trainer, a vice president of public relations for Concord Management Ltd., which manages Heron Park, said a resident who witnessed the shooting called 911.
Based on the sheriff’s report Trainer saw, she said the shooting didn’t involve residents. The argument was between two guests and it’s unclear whether they were visiting the same resident or how they knew each other, she said.
“It’s obvious this was a targeted thing,” Trainer said. “This wasn’t a random event.”
After 8 p.m. Friday, a man drove into the parking lot near Building 2, she said, and then a resident and his guest came out of an apartment in the same building. Not long after that came a single shot that struck the other guest, Trainer said.
“Certainly it’s disturbing,” she said. “But it’s not something that’s a security threat to residents.”
Management will look into whether there were any violations of resident behavior policies, Trainer said.
Though the community is gated, she said, residents can easily buzz in guests. She said the community has surveillance cameras and her company is cooperating with the Sheriff’s Office to see if there’s any footage that could shed light on what happened.
Neither the 911 tape recording or the sheriff’s report on the shooting were available to the Daily News on Saturday.
It hasn’t been determined why the man went to the Home Depot or why he was shot, sheriff’s spokeswoman Williamson said. It’s difficult to say how long it might take investigators to find out that information, she said.
“They are still in the middle of the investigation,” she said. “So that will depend on where their investigation takes them.”
At 8:38 p.m. Friday, Collier deputies received a call from the store at 1651 Airport-Pulling Road S. after the wounded man showed up at the door.
He was described as a black man appearing to be in his 20s.
Deputies are still looking for the shooter, Williamson said.
The seriousness of the man’s injury was unknown and he was still believed to be at Lee Memorial on Saturday. A condition update for the media wasn’t available from the hospital because the man’s name isn’t known yet.
“Usually, if it would have changed from a shooting to a death by shooting, we would receive that kind of update,” Williamson said.

A message left with the leasing office at Heron Park on Saturday wasn’t immediately returned. The gated community has one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments, according to its website.

I can't agree more. I learned the 5W's and H in grammar school. It seems they still haven't mastered that with their writing. It's truly sad.

I have to respond to this article, because it is not factual. I live in Heron Park, and I was a witness to the incident. There were, in fact, 4 shots fired, and this is not a gated community. Just because you have a gate doesn't make it 'gated.' The gate needs to actually work and remain closed. For as long as I've been a resident here (and for a while prior to according to other residents) the gate has not worked. ANYONE can enter this apartment complex because the gate remains permanently open. And, the exit gate opens automatically as a car approaches. Therefore, there is no security here. The incident was a frightening experience to go through, and it doesn't matter if those involved were guests because they were associating with residents. My thoughts have always been 'birds of a feather' so I am concerned that this can happen again.

I live at this apartment complex. Never had better neighbors in my life. However, I've been here for six months and NEVER have I seen the gate locked. How can this be called a gated community? What is the definition of a gated community? Are you absolutely kidding me? ...That's why we are leaving when our lease is up. What a shame. Very disappointed with the management of this place.

I think that's exactly what happened.

I have actually lived at Heron park for awhile now and nothing ever happens here. Just the usual complaints that I guess you have anywhere you live, parties etc. who cares if the gates work or not they are a pain to use anyway and as far as I'm concerned there isn't a guy there watching anyway. When people want to do bad they will do bad wherever they can. It doesn't change my feeling about living here. Hope they catch the person responsible before he hurts someone else.

It's funny that you said nothing ever happens here in Heron Park, because about a month ago I saw a female tenant getting arrested. About a week ago, there were several police cars called to one of the buildings, and prior to that I saw the police in here for some sort of domestic dispute where another tenant was hauled away. And, according to our neighbors, who have lived here longer than I have, there have been several other incidents as well. So you either have blinders on, are just completely unaware of what goes on here, or are being dishonest. I am sure that this was a nice place to live at one point, but it is morphing into something else. It is unfortunate.

And, I have to comment on one more thing, you may not like or feel the need for the gates. However, management has charged people for them. Therefore, they should work whether you like them or not. Otherwise, management is stealing money from residents. If you charge for a service that you don't provide, you are stealing...not to mention, the apartment complex is advertised as a 'gated community.' If the gates don't work, then that is false advertisement, and you are instilling a false sense of security into the new tenants who think they are coming to a place where management actually cares about them.

Lmao sounds like you are the neighborhood watch. Maybe you should patrol the parking lots at night to help solve crime. And besides if you hate it so much....why are you still there?? Sounds like you like the drama. I keep to myself and don't bother anyone and so far nobody has bothered me. So I only speak for my experience. Not yours.

I agree. I have been a resident for a little over 3 years and those gates have worked for a total of about 2 weeks. Yet everytime they say they have "fixed" them there is another go around to collect money for the new "cards or codes" needed to get thru the gates. When you ask management about it there is always an excuse. Last time it was "the hurricane that went thru Tampa knocked the system down" That was in August. Still waiting on the system to be "up" again. Management lies about everything and getting them to take care of little maintanence issues is impossible. All the management company wants is the rent and any security issues or complaints in any way can just wait.

I'm definitely not the neighborhood watch. I just pay attention to what's around me. You should try it some time. I'm still here because I signed a lease. I will definitely be leaving when it's up. Have no desire to raise my kids around this drama, which is something I don't want or need in my life. That's why I am angered by the crap going on here and management's ambivalence.
