Major donation aids Seacrest school’s plan for new gym, science center

Seacrest Country Day School soon will have a new gymnasium and science center to accommodate the growing high school student population. The new two-story, 25,000-square-foot building will be made possible thanks to an anonymous donation of $4 million -- the largest cash gift in the school’s history.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a joint venture of the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, is kicking off “Go Healthy Month” in September to push the message about healthy eating and physical activity among children. Full story »

Getting their ACT and SAT together

It’s like a test buffet. Lee County high schoolers are liking the taste left behind by the ACT. To many of them, it tastes like high school success. The Lee County students’ average scores on the SAT and ACT were released Friday. The number of students taking the ACT last school year increased and the district’s average scores remained stable. More funding, enrollment woes for Lee County school district

The Lee County School District has about 1,000 fewer students enrolled than it did a year ago and is more than 2,000 students below what the state asked it to estimate for the current school year. This may be the first time the district has lost 1,000 students from the beginning of one school year to the beginning of the next school year, but it is not the first time state enrollment estimates have shortchanged the district. Teamsters rally for Collier school district custodians

You could hear the horns honking from Barron Collier High School’s parking lot. There wasn’t a traffic jam or accident on Pine Ridge Road. Instead, drivers on the busy North Naples road were honking to show their support for the nearly 100 Collier County schools custodians standing on the side of the road. About 100 members of the Teamsters Local 79, the union that represents the custodians, showed up to rally support Thursday morning, one week before the Collier County School Board is expected to vote on whether to privatize custodial services. Grants awarded to help teachers continue creative projects

Big Cypress Elementary School students will have an addition to their natural habitat science classroom, thanks to the Education Foundation of Collier County. Critics lining up against Bright Futures scholarships

Critics, though, say Bright Futures is fundamentaly unfair and causes economic problems for the universities, which get the bulk of the scholarship money. But their attempts to modify the program have failed because of its vast public support. They say the program is growing faster than the lottery's ability to pay for it and that it helps the children of the rich at the expense of the poor, who buy lots of lottery tickets but are least likely to qualify for scholarships. Band drills: Estero High’s new band director brings a military mind-set
