Chef Q&A: Vic Stretton of Vic’s Island Pizza
Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008
What is your secret ingredient? Why? Everything! Because our steak sauce, our cheese blend for pizza, everything is my formula, something I personally created. For instance, my pizza crust is made fresh on the premises and always hand-tossed. If I tell you the ingredients it won’t be a secret. Full story »
Let's Talk Food: With September comes figs
Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008
Each September my thoughts turn to Tuscany and the Villa Il Poggia, where I spent an unforgettable month.
Surrounding the villa are four acres of olive trees, wild mint, a family of partridges, several hungry rabbits, a lush vegetable garden and my favorite, a towering fig tree. Much to my consternation, my August arrival was too early for me to indulge in my passion for figs. Still, each day I would stand under that tree and gaze upward at the tiny, immature figs. In spite of my entreaties to hurry and ripen, I left Italy with nary a fig in my stomach. Full story »

Chef Q&A: Francisco (Paco) C. Gill
Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008
Who or what inspired you to become a chef/cook? I was born in Mexico, but grew up and lived in California until I moved to Naples. I was 15 when the family moved to San Diego and I began working in a local restaurant part-time after high school. After I graduated, I decided I liked it and started working there full time prepping and helping the chef, so he promoted me up to the line. I stayed there a few years. Then I worked part-time in several area restaurants learning, improving my cooking skills and getting more experience. Full story »

Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008
It wasn’t too long ago that P. Diddy was told us it was “all about the Benjamins.” But these days, $100 isn’t what it used to be. Heck, for some people $100 barely gets them a full tank of gas. But if you spend it right, you can get a lot for that crisp, three-digit bill. That’s where we can help. Today’s story begins a new series that guides you (with the help of local experts) to the best of the best that a Benjamin can buy. Full story »
