Former executive sees damages in eagle case

A former vice president for construction at Stock Development is asking a jury to award him punitive damages against the high-profile developer, saying top executives set him up to take a fall for cutting down a bald eagle nest at Lely Resort in 2003. After a three-day trial in 2006, a jury acquitted Bonita Springs resident Joseph Ulrich, 43, of breaking federal eagle protection laws. Ulrich then filed a civil lawsuit accusing Stock Development, four subsidiaries and Stock CEO Brian Stock and Stock President Bob Imig of fraud and intentional infliction of emotional distress. East Naples fire commissioners lower tax rate

Residents in the East Naples Fire Control and Rescue District won’t be paying a higher tax rate this coming fiscal year. During a special budget workshop last month, East Naples fire commissioners lowered the district’s tentative 2008-09 tax rate from $1.4657 per $1,000 of taxable property value to $1.34 per $1,000 of taxable property value. That’s the message Collier Commissioners hoped to convey to residents Sunday about Hurricane Ike, whose path was pushed farther from Southwest Florida in Sunday weather predictions. Southwest Florida keeps an eye on Ike

Hundreds of visitors to Naples-area beaches decided to take a break from storm preparation for a day of fun in the sun. Although Southwest Florida gradually began shifting out of Ike’s “cone” as the day progressed Saturday, government officials urged residents to closely monitor the hurricane. “At this point there are no evacuations or closures in place for Collier County,” a Collier emergency management statement said Saturday. “The Collier County Emergency Operations Center is monitoring Hurricane Ike around the clock and will advise the public of any changes as soon as they become necessary.” Full story »

    Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
