Behold. The beauty of an inlet. Especially one nestled amid such a natural area on the border of urban development.
This is Clam Pass. It is in Pelican Bay, between Naples and Vanderbilt Beach.

Jeff Lytle: No spin, just honest opinions from district boards' candidates
Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008
No convention hoopla for them. They work under the radar. They attract no big crowds, no headlines, take out few ads and sometimes are at a loss for why some of them win and others lose. Fire board and mosquito control candidates are a different breed. Full story »
Ben Bova: The myths about college educations
Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008
There’s a sort of mythology haunting our educational system. It’s a two-fold myth: First is the assumption that just about every high-school graduate should go on to college. Second is the assumption that students who do go to college shouldn’t have to work to pay for their educations.

Phil Lewis: Palin, Biden display angers some readers
Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin certainly stirred things up. She has become the talk of the 2008 presidential campaign with eight weeks and two days before D-Day. I’ve all but buried disturbing thoughts that voter turnout on Nov. 4 will be as dismal as it was in our Aug. 26 primary, when eight of 10 registered voters in Southwest Florida stayed home. Interest in the general election is soaring. Fight has been injected in the campaign. Full story »
Editorial: Too precious to take risks
Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008
Results of a study into the environmental impact of rock mining led a judge in 2006 to curtail that activity in Miami-Dade County. A follow-up study raises even more serious concerns about mining’s impact on water supplies. The U.S. Geological Survey finds pollution can get to groundwater faster and last longer, perhaps for decades, than previously estimated. Full story »
Editorial: Not afraid of tough job
Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office is ahead of the curve when it comes to immigration. Rather than say “it’s not our job” or defer to federal authorities, the Sheriff’s Office for the past few years has been reaching out to the feds in the spirit of teamwork and cooperation to get dangerous illegals off our streets and off local taxpayers’ backs. iROX keeps rocking right along. These aerials show what motorists cannot see as they roll along 30 miles of Interstate 75 as it is widened to six lanes in northern Collier County. Full story »
Jeff Lytle: Making the grade; mailbox intrigue; storm refugee
Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008
As the fall term gets under way at Florida Gulf Coast University, aspiring students and their families get a reminder of where grades have to be to get there. FGCU reports the new crop of freshmen have an average SAT score of 1036, up from 1022 last fall. Compare that to the latest average SAT score of 1014 for students of Collier County Public Schools; scores for Lee’s Class of 2008 are not out yet. Full story »
Phil Lewis: The random accuracy of exit polling
Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008
The Daily News got a bit of criticism this past Tuesday for doing exit polling on election day in Collier and Lee counties.
We assigned reporters to stand outside polling places with pad and pen. As people exited, the reporters would identify themselves as Daily News reporters and politely ask the voters how they voted. Full story »

Ben Bova: U.S. needs a separate ‘space force’
Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008
There’s a space battle going on right now. But it’s not happening in the wild black yonder, with spacecraft zapping lasers at one another. It’s happening in Washington, mostly, and in the upper echelons of the U.S. Air Force. The battle is over how our military should deal with operations in space. The Air Force, of course, is in charge of most military aviation. Since the advent of artificial satellites, in the late 1950s, the Air Force has assumed control of most of the nation’s military space operations as well. Full story »

Editorial: Parking garage a sound idea for Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park
Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008
Southwest Florida has lots of public beach. It’s public beach parking that is at a premium, and that is significant because access is everything. Full story »
