When Collier County's football teams wrap up their spring games Friday, it will mark the end of high school sports for the 2011-12 school year.

St. John Neumann’s spring football trip across the alley to Miami-Dade soured quickly Friday afternoon, as the Dade Christian Crusaders outplayed the Celtics in every facet of the game on the way to a 36-0 drubbing at Wooten Field.

While the games are just exhibitions, St. John Neumann and Estero will have their hands full as they play the area’s first spring football contests this week.

After visiting Wittenberg University, St. John Neumann linebacker Dakota Sexton said his college choice was easy. “There was an at-home feel when I went there,” Sexton said. “It seemed like a good fit for me.”

A staple of high school football and a rite of passage for many young athletes could be eliminated in Collier County if new rules are passed by the state's prep sports governing body.
