On Monday, I fished central Estero Bay with Scott Heiss, his brother, Steve Heiss, their Heiss, dad, Jerry Heiss, and Scott’s 10-year-old son, Nicholas. We had a good morning of fishing with live shrimp along the tree lines. Nicholas caught the biggest redfish at 22 inches, and we caught two other keepers at 19-and-one-half inches and 20 inches. The group also caught seven keeper mangrove snapper, and we released a 26-inch snook.

Anglers often become frustrated when unable to relocate a hot spot offshore. Marker floats can solve this problem. For coastal fishing, an empty half-gallon bleach jug works well as anything you’ll find at a tackle shop.

Fishing: Big "mamas'' moving in to spawn

Big snook moved into the passes in the Naples and North Naples area this past week. These large females wait for a full moon and some summer rains, both of which we had this past week, to move inshore for the summer spawn. There, they are greeted by a bevy of smaller males, and the nightly spawning ritual begins.
