Chris Isaak brings his rock croon to Barbara B. Mann

Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008
Chris Isaak, 52, was probably just born at the wrong time. Nearly 25 years after he got his start with “Silvertone,” he descends on the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall Tuesday night with a show that’s likely to be more of a singing time capsule than the set of a viable recording artist. Full story »

Review: God save the Queen (and her food, too)

Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008
One of my fondest memories of England in general and London in particular is diving into a pub to get away from the heat of the summer or the chill of the winter. The neighborhood pub — as British an institution as tea at 5 o’clock and horse races at Ascot — is usually dark, unpretentious and comfortingly simple. Full story »

Drama on the edge: Local production of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” ventures into challenging territory

Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008
In what is perhaps a theater first, director Paul Graffy’s most pressing note to his leading man was that he needed to be more narcissistic. After all, how many actors need to be prompted to be more self-assured. But to play Hedwig, the title character of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” Michael McAvoy is going to need to reach stratospheric heights of self-appreciation. He’s also going to need a little grooming. Daily News critics look at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts’ coming season with tips on their picks

Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008
Early inspection of the coming season of classical music had come away wanting: Looking for fireworks, getting only bottle rockets. That was before the recital programs, with names like Joshua Bell, came out. And before a conversation with Naples Philharmonic Director Jorge Mester, who grabs, and runs with, the season’s selling point: piano concertos from five of the Western World’s giants. Full story »

When your heart is set on pizza, nothing else will do the trick. You take that first satisfying bite, sinking your teeth into a not-too-crunchy crust and the well-seasoned tomato sauce that’s sliding out from under a blanket of deliciously melted mozzarella. Culinary speaking, it’s almost a mystical experience. Full story »

Mid-life conquest: Members of Phoenix Block want it all

Thursday, July 31, 2008
As rehearsals go, this one isn’t the most organized. There aren’t enough cords for the equipment. To mic the piano in the far corner of the room, a two cords are banded together and stretched as far as possible. The sound mix is too heavy on the bass and drums, in part because of the close quarters. Full story »

Review: New ’Mummy’ long on mindless entertainment and big on spectacle

Thursday, July 31, 2008
If you haven’t seen any other movies this summer, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” is the flick for you. Not because it’s so good, but because it contains so many of the same elements as this season’s earlier hits that it’s like one-stop shopping at the multiplex. Full story »
