FGCU chosen to repeat as A-Sun volleyball champs

Florida Gulf Coast University’s volleyball team was ranked atop the Atlantic Sun Conference by its coaches in the poll released Thursday. FGCU, which went 23-3 overall and won the A-Sun’s regular-season title with a 10-1 mark in its first Division I season, hogged nine of 11 first-place votes. Lipscomb, last year’s A-Sun tournament champion, was a distant second. Full story »

There’s still plenty of tinkering to do, of course, but the bulk of the transition of Florida Gulf Coast University’s volleyball program already is complete. Jaye Flood, who was suspended with eight games remaining last season due to “student welfare” concerns and was fired in January after a university investigation determined she pursued an inappropriate relationship with a student, is now but a memory. Thanks to a new hire, Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball assistant Leo Miller will be back on the floor this season. FGCU coach Dave Balza has hired Sean Egan to replace Miller as director of basketball operations, allowing Miller to again take on a coaching role. Full story »
FGCU volleyball player to miss season because of pregnancy

The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team will be without one of its most important players this season. Well, mostly. But the program likely will gain its youngest fan.
