The owners of the Eastland Mall in Charlotte, N.C., already had seen one Cinema 'N' Drafthouse franchisee come and go from their theater without paying rent when a new franchisee signed a lease for the property in March 2000. James Duffy's Cinema Grill corporation had financially backed the lease, but didn't respond to the lawsuit that followed. The case ended with a $373,433.46 judgment for unpaid rent under both leases, attorneys fees and court costs. Matt Clark/Daily News
