Now, this holiday once dominated by mommy’s little ghosts and witches has morphed into a green holiday. Not green as in weird old Al Gore or stupid new light bulbs, but green as in Americans spending almost $6 billion a year on October 31 delights.

As I watched my team, the Atlanta Braves, blow their chance for a wild card ticket to the playoffs, I realized that while the Braves don’t always disappoint, they’re getting better at it.

It had to do with his mom’s desire to protect him from loose talk, especially the sort us geezers commit. “Dondaddy said the ‘S’ word, Mom!”

I can’t think of any downside to the move in either place. And it would save a bit of money.

She is Hea Lange, who volunteers her time and efforts to the Heart Pillow Ministry at Naples First Church of the Nazarene. She and other women and men sew the little red pillows issued to heart surgery patients at NCH Healthcare System hospitals and other medical facilities here.
